To think smoking is out of order...

In a kids' play park.

Adults sat on a bench in the kids' play area, a few metres from kids playing, chain smoking rollies.
I know that realistically it probably won't cause any damage to passing kids, being outside in the open air, but it's just not cool and not okay in my opinion.

Plus I'm pretty sure they just left their tab ends lying on the ground. Nobs. Angry

It’s more harmful inside a car, for pollution than sat in a park next to someone smoking

Some stunning logic there.

TheQueef · 23/07/2018 18:03

You don't smoke in the playground because the inconvenient oiks run around impaling themselves on your hot faaaaaag.

blueskiesandforests · 23/07/2018 18:04

I wonder how people who think it's ok to smoke in a kids playground would feel about a couple of people drinking cans of beer in the public playground. What about smoking weed?

Gottagetmoving · 23/07/2018 18:08

They usually have signs saying no smoking where I live but even so, anyone smoking anywhere here are given death threat looks! Grin

ivykaty44 · 23/07/2018 18:18

Well logically how often do you strap your children into a car?
Compared to how often do your children sit and play outside whilst someone is smoking

How often do you see on mumsnet parent worrying about the pollution inside a car that thier children are breathing

Yet worry about smoking on a park bench

Oh for chrissake

I take it the park is in the OPEN AIR ??*

Yeah... I mean I literally used the words "open air" in my OP. But cool, glad to see you're paying attention... Grin

YANBU, it’s disgusting. It’s not passive smoking (although the smell is fucking grim), it’s the fact that the more children are exposed to smoking the more likely they are to smoke.

I’m an ex smoker here, don’t know whether that matters. I fully accept I was disgusting when I smoked, but it pre dated having DC by several years (and the smoking ban for that matter) so I was never smoking in front of or near children.

wellBeehivedWoman · 23/07/2018 18:26

Tbh I think anyone who smokes anywhere except alone, in their own home or garden is an inconsiderate arsehole and an idiot to boot so as far as I'm concerned YANBU but I expect I'll not be popular for saying so Grin

likeacrow · 23/07/2018 18:27

I did look around for a no smoking sign as generally see them in play parks these days, but couldn't spot one, unusually.

Was in the adjacent younger kids' play park with DD otherwise I'd have been seriously tempted to say something.

As a PP said, some things are just not cool to do in an area specifically for kids: smoke, booze, watch porn. Adults have plenty of other spaces and opportunities to do these things (I've no problem at all with any of them) so why not allow kids their own areas without them.

I also completely think the same about swearing around kids.

Before anyone trots out the old pearls and clutching cliche, I drink, sometimes smoke, can swear like a trooper and have watched porn...

Just not in a kids' play area.

Wellbehive
I’d rather people didn’t smoke in thier gardens alone either - it stinks, but in the scheme of things not a lot can be done

likeacrow · 23/07/2018 18:40

Also, I was born in 81, so I did manage to survive an 80s childhood. Still think smoking in an area designed for kids is out of order.

TeachesOfPeaches · 23/07/2018 18:46

Surprised at these answers. I find it horrid when adults smoke in an enclosed children's play area.

bargainbin · 23/07/2018 18:59

100% agree, the smoke won't do them any damage but normalising smoking is not ok.

ElevenSmiles · 23/07/2018 19:00

Drinking, smoking, swearing, in play areas it's usually teen kids anyone got a teen?

Gottagetmoving · 23/07/2018 19:04

Tbh I think anyone who smokes anywhere except alone, in their own home or garden is an inconsiderate arsehole and an idiot to boot

Is smoking with another smoker ok with you, or does one specifically have to be 'alone' ?? Confused

AlmostAJillSandwich · 23/07/2018 19:07

Being outdoors doesn't stop people around you inhaling your smoke, it doesn't magically go straight up.
The number of times i've had no choice to walk through someones disgusting smoke or had it blown at me, its every time you're out in a public place, smokers are incredibly selfish.

ivykaty44 · 23/07/2018 19:19

It’s not just smokers though is it, other pollution is far worse and killing thousands each year

blueskiesandforests · 23/07/2018 19:48

Eleven I've got a teen. The only people I've seen smoking in the neighborhood play park we live right opposite are a couple in their 20s with two relatives - another woman also in her 20s and presumably the mother of one of the couple in her 50s perhaps. Teens smoking and drinking in the playground would be given short shrift by all the neighbors. Not denying teens smoke, drink and swear, but they don't do it in the kids play area here. They sometimes sit about in there chatting, but don't smoke or drink in there.

blueskiesandforests · 23/07/2018 19:49

The group of adults described above turn up all "supervising" one toddler, not without a child.

Oysterbabe · 23/07/2018 20:07

Why do people always crap on about pollution from cars when we're talking about smoking? Are we supposed to pick one thing that's bad for our child and only care about that?

ElevenSmiles · 23/07/2018 20:09

So blue no one challenges adults smokers in the play area it's just the teens that would get it in the neck, would that depend on how big their parents were ?

ivykaty44 · 23/07/2018 20:09

It’s due to it being about 100 times worse, no one ever seems to worry about putting babies in cars but someone smoking a mile away and all hell breaks lose 🤣

blueskiesandforests · 23/07/2018 20:41

Eleven it's illegal for under 18s to smoke, not for adults. There are no no smoking signs in our play area, and I've only seen one family if adults smoke there, ever. It's antisocial but not illegal or against local rules. You bet people would tell teens not to. Their parents would want you to 'round here. It's the kind of place where the fact someone walking by almost certainly knows your mum is a reason kids behave, not the kind of place parents threaten anyone who tells their child off.

Nanny0gg · 23/07/2018 20:55

It's' foul and I doubt they clean up the litter they leave.
