To think smoking is out of order...

In a kids' play park.

Adults sat on a bench in the kids' play area, a few metres from kids playing, chain smoking rollies.
I know that realistically it probably won't cause any damage to passing kids, being outside in the open air, but it's just not cool and not okay in my opinion.

Plus I'm pretty sure they just left their tab ends lying on the ground. Nobs. Angry

Just because it happened in the 70s and 80s doesn't make it ok. We're finding out all the time the effects of passive smoking - yes the fumes are still there in the open air Hmm

In addition, smoking in front of kids is modelling to them that smoking is ok.

Gottagetmoving · 23/07/2018 21:04

it's illegal for under 18s to smoke, not for adults

It's not illegal. It's illegal to sell cigarettes to under 18s but not illegal to smoke under that age.

ReggaetonLente · 23/07/2018 21:08

I don’t think it’s great, I’m an ex smoker and would never have done this

Cherrysherbet · 23/07/2018 21:15

It's disgusting anywhere tbh. Should be banned completely.

1CantPickAName · 23/07/2018 21:16

I find the amount of discarded fag ends disgusting, they’re all over our local playground

ElevenSmiles · 23/07/2018 21:51

Just the adults smoking in play area then blue.

YANBU. It’s low rent and not allowed for a reason. Needs to be well away from kids, WTF is wrong with people.

It still astounds me that people don't seem to care about smoking near children. The world and his wife now know that it's not okay. And I'm a smoker myself. I know it's utterly selfish to inflict it upon others, especially children. Sheer bloody mindedness.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/07/2018 22:17

^^This (except I'm not a smoker). FFS, the stuff stinks, and it travels. As a PP said, being in the open air doesn't somehow magically make it dissipate.

Amanduh · 23/07/2018 22:34

Why would anyone need or want to go toma childs playground to smoke? Bizarre behaviour. Yanbu OP it’s just unnecessary

Stirner · 23/07/2018 22:41

Go on op, have a fag, it'll help you relax.

You’d think the smokers would have a moral compass. No problem with people doing what they like in their own home but, it’s disgusting to do that in a playground

MadMags · 23/07/2018 22:49

Only rough scrotes would smoke in a children’s playground.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/07/2018 22:50

Tbf to smokers, I think they often just don't get it. I was with my dh and 3 dc at the train station the other day, waiting to be picked up - we were in a kind of shelter arrangement with seats and someone came in and lit up. I moved us all out of there and when he saw us going and realised why he apologised and said he'd move (by which time we were out anyway). He wasn't being immoral - just thoughtless. Many, if not most, smokers have no idea how much it stinks and how it clings to everything.

AgentCooper · 23/07/2018 22:51

It's just a bit gross. Can you really not wait until your kid is finished playing before you have a fag? I say that as an ex-smoker.

And the normalising smoking thing is a big issue for me. I used to try to hide the fact that I smoked, was constantly jittering for a fag and quitting was hellish. Smoking definitely had negative effects on my mental health and I don't want DS ever thinking it's a desirable pastime.

Amanduh · 23/07/2018 22:54

Presumably their kids were the playing and they thought they’d have a fag in the sunshine? What’s bizarre is that you couldn’t think that out for yourself. hmm I can figure out why they were there thanks but I can’t figure out why somebody would want or need to have a fag right then and there on a hot, sunny day... to blow smoke across little kids faces 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's gross. Smoking in the open air doesn't make it okay, it's still big clouds of stinking smoke for other people to "enjoy" should they have the misfortune to be downwind.
Can't wait for the day it's banned.

PaulAnkaDog · 23/07/2018 22:58

I’m a smoker, I’d never dream of smoking in a play park. Although I’m fairly strict with it, my child has never once seen me with a cigarette.

Blue09 · 23/07/2018 23:00

I agree - I wish they would ban it in public places altogether. Drives me nuts when i leave somewhere like a coffee shop and have to walk out through plumes of smoke, it’s not fair to smoke near kids/on a kids play park. Although I am an ex-smoker so I’m one of those annoying types that bangs on about it all the time.
