Sex shop wouldn't sell me vibrator.

NC for this as slightly embarrassing...

Went in to a well known sex shop to buy a vibrator. I'm 27 weeks pregnant and wanted to buy one of the wands. I took it to the till and the woman at the front stated that these vibrators weren't safe for use in pregnancy and wasn't happy selling it to me. Told me it can cause preterm labour. She then pointed me in the direction of something entirely different and said this would be safer as the vibrations are less and it is internal.

I have spoken to my midwife since who has told me it's absolutely fine to use a vibrator. I have no issues with my cervix, no concerns about preterm labour etc. She told me it is actually more dangerous to use a dildo as it can introduce bacteria, which is what the lady in the shop told me to buy instead! Told me that pre term labour CAN be caused by orgasm but only if you have other underlying issues which I do not.

AIBU to go back and ask them to sell it to me? Going on holiday tomorrow morning and really wanted to take it with. Not the end of the world if I can't but would've been nice...

Could you not get it delivered to your hotel op?

CarlottaAlotta · 23/07/2018 16:04

OT, sorry..... do people find these body wands ruin you for manual/oral stimulation or does it not make a difference?

RafikiIsTheBest · 23/07/2018 16:08

You should of just acted very offended and told them you're not pregnant! Be worth the laugh for later.

But yeah I think best bet is to say it's a present for a hen do or something, with a different sales person.

Hope you managed to get something OP, but are you not worried about going through customs with it? Or are you not going abroad? And others hearing it/you? Assuming you're staying with others.

On another note I can't find the Hitachi wand on Amazon, any links?

LeahJack · 23/07/2018 16:10

I’d probably go with the shop advice tbh. They will have specific info on the make and model whereas midwives will have limited if any knowledge.

I don’t understand why anybody would take the risk when there are plenty of, ahem, alternatives on offer.

CarlottaAlotta · 23/07/2018 16:10

@NC4T I don't see DP much. I don't think anything could ruin that for us!

@RafikiIsTheBest we are driving to France. Girls road trip! We are in separate rooms but to be honest I don't really care!

I used to work in a women’s sex shop (some years ago!) and there were items for sale that were not for use in pregnancy.

I’m sorry this disappointed you but the staff member would’ve been following her training re: the manufacturers directions for the product.

TrudeauGirl · 23/07/2018 16:10

I don't think we have the brand here but any other plug in wands ate amazing too.

I'd say order from America but then you'd have to faff around with a plug converter thing.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 23/07/2018 16:11

Whenever I've bought a vibrator it says on the box to get medical advice before using in pregnancy. I personally wouldn't use one in pregnancy only because I was worried about what the vibrations could do.
I can't see on what grounds she couldn't sell it to you, there's no law against it and it's not any of her business whether you risk using it or not.

CarlottaAlotta · 23/07/2018 16:12

@BettyDuMonde the manufacturers advice is that it is safe for use in pregnancy unless told otherwise by your medical team. This is also stated on their own website...

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 23/07/2018 16:15

Orgasms are completely safe in pregnancy unless there's something wrong. Me and DP were at it like rabbits through my last pregnancy right up until I gave birth. 😁It's the vibrations and possibly risk of bacterial infection using a vibrator.

TheQueef · 23/07/2018 16:17

Hactually on a serious note, didn't Hitachi stop making the body wand because everyone was wanking with it?

BettyDuMonde · 23/07/2018 16:18

It’s a long time ago but I believe my staff training was something like ‘if you used it before pregnancy you will likely be able to continue using it’ but that purchasing new gadgets/products should be avoided.

The company I worked for went bust ages ago (pun intended) mind you - but I reckon some shops will be extra cautious due to an increasingly litigious society :/

TrudeauGirl · 23/07/2018 16:18

Were you not supposed to do that with it?

MrSpock · 23/07/2018 16:19

Why do people insist on babying pregnant women? We’re not stupid.

TheQueef · 23/07/2018 16:20

No it was for back massages and muscles.
I've got an old Hitachi mains and the high setting is fucking high.

CarlottaAlotta · 23/07/2018 16:20

So those saying I should follow her advice, do you also think women shouldn't have orgasm in pregnancy? You are much more likely to go in to early labour due to orgasm than due to vibrations (and only if you have underlying issues already!) - hmm.

Ahh right Blush

delphguelph · 23/07/2018 16:24

You're on a girls road trip to France, on the hunt for a vibrator and 27 weeks pregnant?

mummyhaschangedhername · 23/07/2018 16:25

Hitachi seem to do an attachments for men to wank with so I can't see them stopping it for that reason.

Note: I'm extremely vanilla and finding this thread very informative.

MissConductUS · 23/07/2018 16:30

For those who can't find it on amazon, they've taken Hitachi out of the name, now it's just the Original Magic wand. Here it is on the US website

Original Magic Wand

All I can find on the Amazon UK site are knock offs. Sad

NotUmbongoUnchained · 23/07/2018 16:30

You're on a girls road trip to France, on the hunt for a vibrator and 27 weeks pregnant?

And?

SleepingStandingUp · 23/07/2018 16:32

I'd trust your midwife over the most likely not medically trained sales assistant. I'd go back and get it. Chances are someone else might serve your anyway. If it's the same person explain that you have spoken to the midwife and it's fine, skis she actually saying the company line is pregnant women shouldn't orgasm for 9 months.

rainbowstardrops · 23/07/2018 16:37

I second what other posters have said, go in and say it's a gift for a hen party.

Gottokondo · 23/07/2018 16:41

"It's not for me but to use with my female partner". That should do it.
