If you are one of those people that is glued to your phone, what are you reading/looking at?

Genuine question - not being goady. If you are one of those people that has their phone on the table on a meal out/drinks with friends? One of those people that cycles with their phone in their hand? Suddenly stops in the street to read something on your phone? What is it? I am intrigued. I check my phone maybe a few times a day. I have plenty of friends, out at least 3/4 times a week so it can't be anything to do with popularity.

I am on my phone a lot but being glued to it at meals, nights out etc is just bad manners
I check into MN quite a bit especially if there is a live parking thread.

Gromance02 · 23/07/2018 10:10

I am often on MN but only when bored. Sorry MN!

I always think it's rude when people have their phones out at a meal oh does it and it drives me mad, but on Saturday my dcs had a sleep over at my friends the only other place they've slept is grandma's me and oh went for a meal and I left my phone on the table in case my friend rang or text me.

I want to ask the lady who lives at the back of me what she is doing on her phone every single time she comes out for a fag. My desk faces directly onto the back of her house so she catches my eye each time.

She's just had her garden done (nice lawn!) so she could be admiring it or sitting on her new sun loungers when she doesn't have the sprinkler going on it for hours but she just paces round glued to the screen, then goes in again.

Marymarg · 23/07/2018 10:13

I realised I spent most of yesterday online looking at various stuff. I went on facebook, mumsnet, eBay to check the price of something, I googled a lot. I wasted my day.
I hardly watch TV anymore.

Oysterbabe · 23/07/2018 10:13

Mumsnet.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 23/07/2018 10:16

Playing a Harry Potter a Hogwarts Mystery, reading news articles, mumsnet or Quora.

Gromance02 · 23/07/2018 10:16

My query is prompted by almost running someone over this morning that literally stepped in front of my car this morning as she didn't look up from her phone. Fucking idiot.

Pokemon go
Mumsnet
Not in restaurants though

LesbianNotQueer · 23/07/2018 10:19

I use my phone a lot, although not with company I hasten to add!

I read random pages on Wikipedia, the news, articles my friends have shared, research whatever my latest obsession is (currently Edwardian furniture styles) , Google questions that have struck me during the day, check mumsnet, etc. etc.

I always wonder about people who almost boast about not using their phones much (not saying you are doing this) do they have no curiosity? the whole worlds knowledge is in your hand, how can you resist??

LanceStatersGold · 23/07/2018 10:19

Work usually - either marketing or replying to emails. But I’m not glued to it out and about so can’t snswer you there.

BarryTheKestrel · 23/07/2018 10:21

Me and DH have a rule, no phones in company other than each other. We are both admin for busy forums and therefore like to keep on top of posts and requests as what could have a been a quick accept click ends up being a few hours of catch up otherwise.

However, we would never be on our phones in company of anyone other than each other. We are very good at carrying on our conversations whilst slightly distracted however know this is rude and disrespectful when out or socialising with other people.

Gilead · 23/07/2018 10:25

I have books on my 'phone. If I'm glued to it, I'm at the hospital/doctors/waiting for dc, I'm reading a book.

I am a heinous phone addict. I don’t do in restaurants unless I’m on my own. Before phones I used to read anything and everything. Downside - I read less books. Upside: content is more interesting than the back of sauce bottles/ magazines/ flyers.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 23/07/2018 10:28

I have books on my 'phone.

Sorry, going to sidetrack the thread, how do you get books on your phone, is their a particular app?

I've also got books - the Kindle app for my phone is great as I can read either on my phone or on my main Kindle depending upon where I am at the time.

Drains the battery though

Frequency · 23/07/2018 10:31

Quite often I am checking the freelancing site I use to find work/communicate with clients/get paid or I am checking/working on/reading work I am doing for myself.

Sometimes I am reading a Kindle book or researching for a client using Google and the notes app on my phone. Sometimes I am reading MN or other entertainment sites, though, tbf, I don't tend to browse social media in social settings and I only tend to read Kindle books on public transport. I wouldn't sit in the pub with you and start reading or working on client projects but I would sit in the pub with you and reply to work emails if I received one.

Gromance02 · 23/07/2018 10:33

Whatsapp dozens of times a day? Wow.

It may be to do with my age (early 40's). I can go on holiday with friends and leave my phone for days at a time.

Mumsnet first and foremost
Then kindle
Then twitter
Then coursework (which I can annoyingly do on my phone as it’s all tiny 10 minute modules with a multiple choice quiz at the end).

Livinglavidal0ca · 23/07/2018 10:33

Don’t do it when I’m out for dinner or anything though!

MeltingPregnantLady · 23/07/2018 10:35

Kindle app usually. That or reddit.

I do work. I meant I am out with friends 3/4 nights a week. Not just speaking to them on the phone!

MN right now but often eBay or like PPs, I have books on my phone. I'd have been lost without iBooks during the long breastfeeding years. I prefer a proper book tbh but the phone is perfect for one-handed reading in a dark room.
Also great for waiting rooms and bus journeys, saves having the weight of a book in your handbag permanently.

I like to read the news online too, had to explain to my dad recently that all these people staring at their phones aren't all "wasting time on social media", it's not that different from reading a newspaper or a book which he would find perfectly normal.
