Genuine question - not being goady. If you are one of those people that has their phone on the table on a meal out/drinks with friends? One of those people that cycles with their phone in their hand? Suddenly stops in the street to read something on your phone? What is it? I am intrigued. I check my phone maybe a few times a day. I have plenty of friends, out at least 3/4 times a week so it can't be anything to do with popularity.

TheHulksPurplePanties , I get mine through google play store. It used to be the I Store, when I had an I phone. My provider EE often gives away free books, over Christmas, on my Birthday etc.

The cycling one, might be a pacer, or calorie counter type thing.

I use my Google Maps when I'm anywhere unfamiliar. My mobility has dropped with illness and I can't chance getting a route wrong. That's what annoys me when people say that they deliberately bump into people who have their phone out, when walking.

You can get a transport app which 'real times' buses coming towards your stop.

Sometimes I'm looking something up that we are talking about.

Sometimes we all look like we are on our phones, but we are checking out places/holidays etc to go.

I've got back into gardening and I use my phone to check out the description/care of plants that I've seen for sale.

Sometimes when we've met up for something to eat, it's to plan an event, or decide on a major present for someone and we are price checking. I do that when I'm shopping, as well.

When my DD was pregnant (I was one of her Birth partners) and I was a Carer to my Mum, my other DD was having a tough time in work, I'd have my phone in my hand.

I also play games on my phone Blush. I'm 51.

I'd forgotten reading the news on my phone. One of us might mention a crash and we'll look up to see the outcome. Or if something is happening in the News.

If one of us is looking for an outfit, we might all look, at the same time, to try to find one. But it'll look like we are ignoring each other.

mademybed123 · 23/07/2018 12:40

Online friends, writing, facebook, twitter, grocery shopping, mn, you name it....

Mia1415 · 23/07/2018 12:46

I'm on my phone a lot. I'd like to think I'm not be rude though and don't look at it if in restaurants etc.

I'll be looking at email (work or personal), text messages, whatsapp, the news, facebook, twitter, instagram, linkedin, doing matched betting , researching something (so google), occasionally playing a game, looking at youtube, mumsnet or another forum, reading a book, looking at traffic, online banking, shopping etc etc

ManyCrisps · 23/07/2018 12:47

Mumsnet and porn

wrenika · 23/07/2018 12:54

I'm making an excuse not to make contact with people...autism. I will usually be reading a kindle book but if I don't have that I may just be flicking through nothing at all, just to make me look busy and prevent people engaging with me!

BeautyQueenFromMars · 23/07/2018 12:57

Facebook, Mumsnet, Kindle, Parentmail, banks, games, text or WhatsApp messages, Google, booking trips or tickets of some kind. A lot of the time I am looking things up related to the conversation I'm having at that moment. Or finding out details of various Pokemon for my DS Hmm.

BeautyQueenFromMars · 23/07/2018 13:03

Oh yes, forgot to mention Netflix, NowTV, iPlayer, ITVhub and eBay.

Passmethecrisps · 23/07/2018 13:06

I have the kindle app so I read books on it
Play Pokemon go
Facebook
MN
Random googling
Buying stuff

I have been a bit obsessive about it recently and need to take a wee break I think.

I try to leave it elsewhere while we are eating but dh and I frequently sit together and randomly google/chat about what we are looking at etc. I don’t see it as that different to watching TV.

I have taken to turning it face down if I have it but have nowhere to put it if that makes sense?

Ontopofthesunset · 23/07/2018 13:09

I've got lots of useful apps on my phone:

BusLondon for when the next bus is due
Google Maps for working out how long it's going to take to walk somewhere and sometimes to follow if I'm walking an unfamiliar route Met Office to check weather forecast
Local train line to check trains are running
BBC news and various newspapers
Kindle for reading books when I don't want to carry my Kindle itself
Audible for listening to books
FitBit for checking my steps
Several language learning apps (Human Japanese, Duolingo, Memrise, Babbel, Lingodeer)
DMinder for checking Vitamin D and safe sun exposure
Mumsnet of course
Facebook occasionally
Work and personal email account
Tesco
Banking
Messenger which my kids use all the time to contact me

I'm not using all of these all of the time but I've located a lot of my life management on my phone. And of course you can look up anything you're interested in instantly which is both a blessing and a curse.

Squidgee · 23/07/2018 13:09

checking my emails.
checking on the telegram groups i'm part of and the two active groups that I admin.
checking if my ex has messaged me.
checking if the school has phoned me (child with SN)
checking if my best friend in America has messaged me.
Playing games.
reading facebook
reading twitter
checking several websites I use regularly to see if I've been messaged or had comments replied to.

ProfessorMoody · 23/07/2018 13:09

Mostly WhatsApp and Facebook messenger. I get constant messages from various friends, family and colleagues.

Also Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Mumsnet, Kindle, Reddit, Harry Potter game, Words with Friends, LOTS of Googling and the random Wiki search you can do, News, Photo editing, Classlist, eBay, Amazon and many more.

There's so much you can do on a phone these days.

BogstandardBelle · 23/07/2018 13:14

My phone has become pretty much indispensable. It is my:

Bookshelf / bookshop - iBooks and Amazon Reader
Music centre / music collection - Apple Music
Encyclopaedia
TV viewer - Netflix, bbc iPlayer etc
Travel agent - booking all flights and travel, finding accommodation etc.
Personal & shared family calendar
Means of communicating with all family and friends - we live abroad, the only people we phone on the landline these days are DHs parents!
For everyone else it’s a combo of FB, what’sApp and email.
Mobile office - we binned our desk top years ago and I hardly use a laptop anymore.
Map - we’ve just spent ten days camping and my phone was our main means of navigating!
Buying / selling stuff - I’m an avid de clutterer so often use it to take photos and post ads directly on FB Marketplace etc, so easy!

I don’t play any games though DSs make up for that with Fortnite and Pokémon Go whenever they can prise it out of my hands :-)

delphguelph · 23/07/2018 13:14

MN. Honestly.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 23/07/2018 13:16

Thanks to everyone who mentioned the Kindle app. I now have it on my phone. FYI, my DH will now be your worst enemy! LOL.

FlyingDandelionSeed · 23/07/2018 13:26

If I'm with people I will be looking up something to do with the conversation (settling a debate/finding information/looking up locations to go to next) or communicating with people who are to join us/can't make it etc.

On my own - it's either fun (reading novels, playing games, chatting to friends, Mumsnet) research (what is that beautiful plant/bird I just saw? places to go, things to do, looking at craft patterns, etc), or practical (grocery shopping, clothes/toys/stuff for the home, making appointments, arranging to meet friends, colleagues etc.).
