Genuine question - not being goady. If you are one of those people that has their phone on the table on a meal out/drinks with friends? One of those people that cycles with their phone in their hand? Suddenly stops in the street to read something on your phone? What is it? I am intrigued. I check my phone maybe a few times a day. I have plenty of friends, out at least 3/4 times a week so it can't be anything to do with popularity.

I would sit in the pub with you and reply to work emails if I received one I would do this if I was on 100k plus but I'm not unfortunately.

If I left my phone for days at a time I'd probably end up bankrupt. I've just turned to a new source of income and I'm not very established yet. I get work by being available when others aren't. For the last two nights in a row that's meant being online to complete urgent projects in the wee hours of the morning.

Once I'm more established I imagine I'll find it easier to have downtime. In the meantime I have become one of those annoying people who can't move an inch without her phone.

TinyTear · 23/07/2018 10:43

Pokemon Go but not at meals

Basta · 23/07/2018 10:43

News articles, Wiki, Mumsnet, Facebook... But not when I'm having a meal with someone or walking along the street.

soupforbrains · 23/07/2018 10:44

@TheHulksPurplePanties I have loads of books on my phone and am often glued to it walking around.

I have Amazon Prime membership so I use the kindle app sometimes if I can find things I want to read in the Prime reading. The other app which I use and is actually the best is OneDrive. Through that app you use your existing memberships to any libraries and can access the libraries ebook collections for free. and also audio books which I like for sunbathing and bedtime.

Noboozeforme · 23/07/2018 10:45

I live on my phone outside of work - where I rarely touch it.

I am either looking at:

what's app
Tv program
Reading a book
MN
Facebook groups
Facebook messenger
Reading the news
Reading random articles
Looking up answers to questions
You tube

I'm mid 40's and love tech.

BertieBotts · 23/07/2018 10:45

FB, MN, Reddit, mobile games or whatsapp.

Sometimes I write notes to myself. Sometimes I'm checking stuff like the weather, a map, my calendar or a bus time app.

I don't do it when I'm with people but if I'm on my own eating, waiting, or on public transport the phone comes out. Occasionally if I'm walking along - I would stop looking at the screen to cross a road though.

I don't find the kindle app drains the battery anywhere near as much as any of these other apps.

I use my phone a lot - I need a high battery life. I love my phone :)

SpectacularAardvark · 23/07/2018 10:45

It is rude during meals though. Unless there is some sort of crisis there is no need.

sockunicorn · 23/07/2018 10:46

im not looking at anything important. facebook, instagram, texting friends back home. I have my head in my phone because i get anxious in social situations and dont like making eye contact with strangers. Im fine around friends and family, I host large parties for people and smile and make all the right gestures. However when on unfamiliar turf (out and about) and when I dont have a "Purpose" (ie the host) I worry what people will think of me. My clothes, my hair, my make up) so its easier to be invisible and keep my head down.

Frequency · 23/07/2018 10:46

I'm not on 100k plus. I'm not even making NMW yet but as I said it's new thing I'm trying so I get work by being available when others aren't and offering a fast turnaround. Once I'm 'known' and have a built a reputation, I probably (hopefully) will switch off when I'm in the pub. It's not really an issue atm because I can't afford to go to the pub Grin

I can't walk and text at the same time though so I wouldn't be wandering into your car. I'm one of those super annoying people who stop dead in the middle of the pavement to reply to emails/texts.

soupforbrains · 23/07/2018 10:47

ugh I'm a moron it's OverDrive not One.

I mainly communicate with friends through text/Whatsapp/Facebook Messenger - so if I get messages I'll be replying to them - I don't see my friends "out" much thanks to distance, work and children. Or I could be looking something up - something that popped into my head, knitting patterns, recipes, whatever. Up to last week there would have been a very high likelihood that I'd have been studying for my driving theory test/doing a mock test.

JacquesHammer · 23/07/2018 10:50

If you are one of those people that has their phone on the table on a meal out/drinks with friends? One of those people that cycles with their phone in their hand? Suddenly stops in the street to read something on your phone?

Those examples are either rude (unless it has been previously agreed) or just dangerous.

However I'm on my phone a LOT. I work in digital marketing though so I will be usually on social media for one of my various clients.

DailyMailcanfuckthefuckoff · 23/07/2018 10:51

If I'm glued to my phone on public transport, I'm using the Kindle app or my daily Sudoku app. If I'm glued to my phone in the street, I'm using Google maps! Grin

I agree with you at other times - I almost feel a bit sad when you see a group of people at a restaurant not talking, all looking at their phones...

Magicstar1 · 23/07/2018 10:53

Mainly my Kindle app. I find that it doesn't use up much battery at all, but if I surf the net my battery dies very quickly.

Chouetted · 23/07/2018 10:53

Often I'm talking to friends - I live hundreds of miles away from them, in different directions. Getting them all in one place is impossible. You may judge me for being on my phone while meeting friends, but you're not seeing the other half of the meetup that's taking place online.

stargirl1701 · 23/07/2018 10:53

I would NEVER use it at a table or whilst cycling/walking!

I use mine about 2-3 hours a day. Reading, mostly, tbh. Newspaper first thing. Magazine articles - been reading a few in The Spectator recently. Checking Twitter as I'm in 2 online book groups this summer. Taking photos of my children or a poncy Insta shot! 😄 I listen to the radio and a podcast most days. Check eBay if I'm bidding on something. Checking email from work, Uni and personal addresses. Watching something on Netflix, Amazon or iPlayer.

It basically replaces my physical newspaper, physical magazines, my alarm clock, my radio, the local wanted/selling ads, the post and the TV. I also have a basic Kindle but I still use the local & Uni libraries a lot - 2x weekly.

stargirl1701 · 23/07/2018 10:54

I'm in my early 40s with 2 small children.

Thanks soupforbrains

Jessers · 23/07/2018 11:05

Reddit, instagram, Kindle, youtube, googling stuff and facebook are my timewasters on my phone.

I only mn at work when I should be working.

Iwantaunicorn · 23/07/2018 11:05

Mumsnet
Playing games
Reading the paper
Reading a book
Looking for cars
Buying kids clothes
Googling random things, such as are my kids meeting their development stages for their age, how to be clean and tidy and organised, recipe ideas, wiki, what do I want to do, financial stuff etc
Sometimes I even message friends and family

I keep my phone on the table if out for dinner, but that’s purely because I have babies, so need to know ASAP if something has gone wrong. I don’t use it though!

usernotfound0000 · 23/07/2018 11:06

If I'm using it walking around it would usually be for directions to somewhere or to google where the nearest x,y or z was. I am a bit addicted to my phone but never use it when I'm out with friends, unless to take a picture or 2 (not endless selfies) and would never use it during a meal.

mantlepiece · 23/07/2018 11:29

I’m the person with their phone in their bag who misses texts and calls which drives DH mad!
