To ask what important things you have accidentally put in the washing machine

I can now add passport laundering, debit card laundering, and oyster card laundering to my CV, all in one day, right before I was supposed to go to the airport. I am still here, I was searching everywhere for these things and couldn’t find them only to realize, they got hot and went for a swim in the washing machine. Thankfully, the debit card is working, I tried it in the ATM and contactless. I haven’t tried the orchestra card, but I hope it’s OK. And I’m trying to dry out my passport. I googled and apparently I’m not the only one who has accidentally put a passport in the washing machine. Please reassure me and tell me about your experiences, and was everything OK in the end? A friend of mine said it was lucky I didn’t put my card in the dryer

DH’s car key. Cost about £200 to get it replaced. Angry DH had put it in a hidden zipped pocket in his football shorts. I was not impressed.

Walkerbean16 · 19/07/2018 22:43

I regularly put my debit card through the wash and its always survived. Managed to put it through the dryer yesterday... it melted :(

Gum - went in with my winter blankets. Was told that peanut butter gets it off - not really and created a huge mess but a couple more times through the washer and it was just fine.

Worst one was about $500 US - I was in charge of the tips at work so I just collected the tips and we tipped out equally at the end of the day. I forgot and washed them with my work clothes. Turns out, US dollars don’t wash too badly (I believe they have some cotton in them). All bills survived which was good as I hadn’t long started the job and had no extra money to pay people back.

Have also washed Canadian dollars. They were also fine as they are plastic.

How the hell did the tortoise get in the washing machine?!

Distractotron · 19/07/2018 22:46

The bleep from work. I only carry one occasionally and this one was washed and dried before the thuds alerted me to its presence in my drier.
Quite a few of exH’s shirts and sweaters got shrunk and I got grief for this. Yet he wouldn’t do his own washing. Funny that.

Gibble1 · 19/07/2018 22:54

Oh boy. DH’s passport. His wallet. Numerous amounts of tissues. My silver watch which never worked again. I loved it too 😢. My Fitbit. Lots of stuff which shouldn’t ever have gone in the machine.

How the hell did the tortoise get in the washing machine?!

@imnotreally

I'd dumped a pile of dirty clothes onto the kitchen floor while I emptied and pegged out the clean load that had just finished.

Unbeknownst to me the tortoise decided to hide in the leg of a pair of DSs dirty jeans while I was outside.....

I just scooped everything up off the floor and put it in the machine!!

My (sen) 5 year old is always setting the washer off with strange stuff in , toot toot drivers fire engine with a pack of wooden kebab skeweres? Yup! Hay from the rabbit hutch, a bag of sugar, his wellies, bottle of ketchup? yup! The little darling even washed one of my new butterfly print plates and a knife and fork. Sigh... more recently i managed to wash a remote control (sky box) and a box of staples. I have had three washing machines in 5 years and numerous repair jobs.

My cat got into the dishwasher without me noticing, I shut the door and was about to set if off. Luckily he panicked and started meowing loudly. Gave us both a fright!

Giving me great ideas here for how to get rid of world’s most fucking annoying fire engine

Notabadger · 19/07/2018 23:13

Pipe cleaners. 2 went in, forgotten inside a pocket. Only one half came out Shock and it was my MILs washing machine !

MonkeySlutIsBlown · 19/07/2018 23:19

The kitten

Thankfully he meowed before I turned it on. BlushI don't think I could have lived with myself if I hadn't had heard him! He still loves jumping in the machine to this day and I always do a double and triple check when I put a load on. Little shit scared me half to death, I had nightmares for weeks afterwards where I'd take the laundry out covered in furSadSad

eightfacesofthemoon · 19/07/2018 23:26

Fucking hell!
All these cats survived.
How many havent
I just put a wash on and leave the house

FootFlapperage · 19/07/2018 23:29

Tv remote for my roku box! Still worked afterwards 😆

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 19/07/2018 23:33

I have an obsession with checking for the cat when I load the washing machine, tumble, dishwasher.

However, I've washed 2 phones, a sky remote, nappies, bleep from work, lighters and many tissues.

MonkeySlutIsBlown · 19/07/2018 23:40

So glad I'm not the only owner of a stupid cat! Bloody shits Grin

FloydWasACat · 19/07/2018 23:54

Almost, but luckily I figured out what the smell was; an open bag of cat biscuits thank you DD for your precious gift to the washing machine god

FloydWasACat · 19/07/2018 23:56

...there was washing in there already. That was fun to empty Confused

delusionsofadequacy · 19/07/2018 23:58

Also washed my work pager, turns out they cost £80 to replace. Luckily the fob survived or it would have been an expensive wash!
A pack of blue head matches had an interesting effect on a white wash.
Also washed a giant paper clip which caused some issues but not as many as 50p coins! Which for some reason fit down the soft pipe but not the hard one!

Tomatoesrock · 20/07/2018 00:04

Lots of things, toys, a metal nail file, thankfully the machine throws all hard items to the front so I hear them knocking on the glass.

The most annoying item is tissues on a dark wash. I empty the pockets of snotty tissues now.

Tomatoesrock · 20/07/2018 00:08

Not that the items were important.

Cantthinkofabloodyname · 20/07/2018 00:09

I washed my vape before. I only discovered my mistake when I heard clonking from the tumble dryer, that had been on a full cycle. One very broken up vape and thankfully no damage to the tumble dryer.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 20/07/2018 00:39

ReggieKrayDoYouKnowMyName Wow, I cant believe it survived.

I’m amazed at how many cats have been in washing machines and survived. Nothing exciting here but I always seem to be washing wipes. Plastic syringes sometimes too.
