To ask what important things you have accidentally put in the washing machine

I can now add passport laundering, debit card laundering, and oyster card laundering to my CV, all in one day, right before I was supposed to go to the airport. I am still here, I was searching everywhere for these things and couldn’t find them only to realize, they got hot and went for a swim in the washing machine. Thankfully, the debit card is working, I tried it in the ATM and contactless. I haven’t tried the orchestra card, but I hope it’s OK. And I’m trying to dry out my passport. I googled and apparently I’m not the only one who has accidentally put a passport in the washing machine. Please reassure me and tell me about your experiences, and was everything OK in the end? A friend of mine said it was lucky I didn’t put my card in the dryer

A nappy. Those crystal type ball things are an absolute ball ache to get off clothes. Angry

moronseverywhere · 19/07/2018 18:52

Oh and £50. I couldn't even salvage it Sad

My mum spun our childhood cat although that was more that the cat got in the machine without my mum noticing rather than my mum put her in there on purpose. The cat lived for a further 17yrs so it clearly didn’t do her too much harm.

A lighter, it went through the wash and then into the tumble drier, lucky the place didn't catch on fire!

chrysalis7 · 19/07/2018 18:56

Just a mobile phone.

It was one that cost a tenner from Argos (a PAYG one,) and even after a 30 minute, 40 C 'eco wash,' it still worked!!! (Once it had dried out!) Still using it now, 5 years on!

Bet a £750 fancy ass smart phone wouldn't have come out quite so unscathed!

earlybirdhasanap · 19/07/2018 18:57

My two week old Apple Watch. It smashed to smithereens. Sob.

AnneProtheroe · 19/07/2018 18:58

A lighter. Finance keys from work. An odd fiver.
More tissues than you could imagine! :)

welshcake82 · 19/07/2018 18:59

DH's whole wallet a few weeks ago.

DH washed a kitten that had clambered into bedding many years ago. Luckily he realised and got it out but then its siblings rejected it as it was so silky and clean and evidently didn't smell like kitten anymore 😕

Riotgrrrrrl · 19/07/2018 19:01

Poo bags, my bus card, a fiver. All survived.

My husbands very expensive dry clean only jumper.
It came out very small and with the texture of cardboard Blush
I was not popular.

A dress of my daughters which had glitter sparkle polka dots on it (a ballet style skirt). No dots left after the first wash but every single other item including dh work clothes were now silver glittered. Embedded totally. Took a very long time to clean and still finding bits.

patphelan · 19/07/2018 19:03

A nappy, sanitary towels and 2 million tissues have all been through the machine and it's a fucking arse of a job to fix. I do try to remember to check. I ended up having to pay nearly 300 quid for a new car key a couple of years ago because not only did it go through a 90 wash it also went through the tumbledryer and melted. Volkswagon keys are shit 😂🙈

CocoaGin70 · 19/07/2018 19:06

3 day old Samsung phone. It had been in my coat pocket, and I put dirty dog walking coat in machine like a chump. Came back into kitchen 20 minutes later and saw my phone pushed up against the glass surrounded by bubbles Hmm. It wasn't insured either.

I walked into the downstairs loo with its replacement a few months later with a stinking cold. Threw phone down the loo and put tissue on the marble top....................... I'm a disaster zone with a phone Blush

cooookies · 19/07/2018 19:13

My DS put one of his books in the washing machine a few weeks ago. One of the big thick cardboard ones. I thought I could hear bashing whilst it was washing but didn't think anything of it. Wasn't til I unloaded and went to hang it out I pulled it out.

It didn't survive.

MustBeThursday · 19/07/2018 19:17

DH's USB stick, DH's work ID card, DH's pen torch, numerous pens and tins of Vaseline (are you sensing a theme here?) because I've somehow missed a pocket in his trousers (even when he's out the wash on Hmm) and not because he forgot to empty his pockets. He's also washed 3 fob watches. We've not done a passport but I'm pretty sure we've washed an Oyster card which still worked afterwards.

Ijumpedtheshark · 19/07/2018 19:20

My phone - twice! It didn’t survive the second time.

LemonysSnicket · 19/07/2018 19:22

Money, an iPod.

Bluelonerose · 19/07/2018 19:23

Lighters are forever going around my washing machine Hmm

I remember once years ago I managed to wash a phone that belonged to my dp at the time. He swore blind his phone worked better afterwards Grin

My sister was visiting from Australia and decided to wash her fabric handbag the fortnight before going back, with yes, her passport inside. Except it was ruined and Australian passports had face recognition bio metric tech. We had to do a mad run to London to get the photos done.

Almondio · 19/07/2018 19:27

A whole pack of sanitary towels. Damn those things are absorbant!!

MikeWyzowski · 19/07/2018 19:28

A book. Nigel Sister's Fast Food. A wonderful book but it destroyed my whites. It disintegrated right into them and they ended up being binned after many attempts to wash them clean ☹. I did learn the valuable lesson to not ever leave books lying on the stair return afterwards (I threw the laundry down the stairs and scooped the whole lot up)

Basta · 19/07/2018 19:40

I haven’t tried the orchestra card, but I hope it’s OK.

I really want an orchestra card now. Grin

Fluffyunicorns · 19/07/2018 19:40

The cat- he climbed in when in got the powder out of the cupboard - you could see him going round - fortunately in an air bubble - could not open the door for 5 mins after turning it off - child lock - desperately tried to break in but could not - he was shaking when he came out and very cleanBlush

Fluffyunicorns · 19/07/2018 19:48

Would appear I’m not the only cat washer!

Didiplanthis · 19/07/2018 19:48

My kindle. It didn't survive...

FeistyOldBat · 19/07/2018 19:49

My phone, a cheap Nokia. It was only a 40 degree wash, too. The SIM survived and served in two further phones.
