“Generally Mixed race children are the most adorable”

I actually think people subconsciously are saying this as a way to signal to themselves and others that they are NOT racist. Every time I have heard this said, and I’ve actually heard it quite a few times in my life, it has been a white person addressing a white woman having a baby with a black man.

My theory is that the white person is living amongst people who may be racist, or there is an unspoken racism in the community, and it’s a way to say “I’m not racist, I don’t think there is a problem with you having a child with a black man,” this giving their ‘approval’ and signalling they don’t think there is a problem. But implicit in this is that some people DO think there is a problem with the situation, it’s the elephant in the room.

So entwined with racist ideas, but the person saying it is trying their best NOT to be racist (and probably failing miserably).

" Firstly, my ancestors played no part in the slave trade and nor did they benefit from it. "

All of us Brits have benefited from the slave trade.

abbsisspartacus · 21/07/2018 10:13

From an artistic perspective mixed race is fantastic to work with creamy skin not too dark not too light etc etc but there is no way to verbalize that without being racist is there

abbsisspartacus · 21/07/2018 10:14

Oh and fried chickens travellers didn't benefit from the slave trade in fact many lost there living because of it

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 21/07/2018 10:17

everyone in the UK has benefited in one way or another from the atlantic slave trade.

abbsisspartacus · 21/07/2018 10:19

🙄

yolofish · 21/07/2018 10:30

For some reason I am thinking of Waynetta Slob, who wants a black baby because "everyone else has one".

I think the comment probably came from a good place, but should have just been "what a beautiful child" or something. I tend to agree with PP who have talked about 'foot in mouth' syndrome.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 21/07/2018 10:37

Of course it is (if you really care!). You wouldn't be allowed to say 'generally white children are the most adorable', would you?

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 10:48

Or the very nature of the Empire. East India trading company for example. But people like Hibeat make statements like 'There is no such thing as race in humankind. That's why it's inherently racist. ( can't be any racism then can there
)There is no dogpanda in the playground nor guinearabbit'.Well you can't be xeno donor according to you no one has a race they can identify with so no one is foreign. Your donor analogy is not clever or amusing to ethnic minorities who die waiting for donors from their communities or Africans being visited by the rich people and being paid for their kidneys.
Are the artificial assembley of Orca whale familes at Sea world all the same or are some foreign? As they have been put together from different nations of whales that have differences in communication and are unable to interact with each other in the same way. I forgot all species are the same every Bear, Fish, ladybird monkey are the same no differences to cope with adaptation to deal with their surroundings have taken place. Anyone who says two groups of people from different areas of the globe are exactly the same because at the end of the day we are all human and bleed and shit the same is using a simple idealistic view of humanity, humanity has evolved because of differences. If we are all the same then explain why White Australians have a high rate of skin cancer is it because they are the same as the Aborginals with darker skin that can withstand the climate and their gentics have adapted to their land but the white Australians according to the no race theory they are the same as them as we are all human so fuck it if they die of cancer. Difference in the animal world within the same species but shall we just say the Asian elephant is the same as the African elephant because they are both elephants or do they have different experiences and needs because they are from different places. It is a cop out to say there are no races so you dont have to deal with race related problems which the UK loves to do and they get all uncomfortable when people mention slavery and Empire Because it doesnt fit the nice multicultural image they want to show. Meanwhile the former colonies are still dealing with the negative impact the Empire has had on them even after independance. They think it is nice to hold something like the commonwealth games to give Jamaicans a stage to show how their genetics have adapted for speed more than Europeans and it is celebrated but in the same breath send windrush migrants back home.

picklepost · 21/07/2018 10:53

The choice of words may not be terrific but essentially it is praise for the exotic which I can appreciate

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 11:40

The true scale of Britain's involvement in the slave trade has been laid bare in documents.

David Cameron's ancestors were among the wealthy families who received generous reparation payments that would be worth millions of pounds in compensation today.
The Independent Online

Slavery on an industrial scale was a major source of the wealth of the British empire.

The true scale of Britain's involvement in the slave trade has been laid bare in documents revealing how the country's wealthiest families received the modern equivalent of billions of pounds in compensation after slavery was abolished.

The previously unseen records show exactly who received what in payouts from the Government when slave ownership was abolished by Britain – much to the potential embarrassment of their descendants. Dr Nick Draper from University College London, who has studied the compensation papers, says as many as one-fifth of wealthy Victorian Britons derived all or part of their fortunes from the slave economy.

As a result, there are now wealthy families all around the UK still indirectly enjoying the proceeds of slavery where it has been passed on to them. Dr Draper said: "There was a feeding frenzy around the compensation." A John Austin, for instance, owned 415 slaves, and got compensation of £20,511, a sum worth nearly £17m today. And there were many who received far more.
Academics from UCL, including Dr Draper, spent three years drawing together 46,000 records of compensation given to British slave-owners into an internet database to be launched for public use on Wednesday. But he emphasised that the claims set to be unveiled were not just from rich families but included many "very ordinary men and women" and covered the entire spectrum of society.

Dr Draper added that the database's findings may have implications for the "reparations debate". Barbados is currently leading the way in calling for reparations from former colonial powers for the injustices suffered by slaves and theirfamilies.

Still waiting for those repatriations. Never going to happen as people like Gunnybear from privalige backgrounds can now conveniently say they didnt benefit from it or colonialism in anyway or race doesnt exsist so it doesnt matter. Try telling the Jewish people who suffered so badly in the holocaust that when they take over Palestine by force and the German people that still pay Israel millions in compensation every year. It cant be all conveniently brushed under the carpet.

gunnyBear · 21/07/2018 14:54

"people like Gunnybear from privalige backgrounds"

Hmm

It's a shame you didn't read the article you copied and pasted which said

"[Dr someone] emphasised that the claims [for payouts] set to be unveiled were not just from rich families but included many "very ordinary men and women" and covered the entire spectrum of society."

Do you see the problem?

Maybe you should be less indignant and leftie and more intelligent.

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 15:11

I did actually maybe you should check what gunnybear said her parents had inherited titles and did not profit from slavery and I said the whole of the UK did not just through slavery but benefited from the whole empire. Gunnybear also stated that race doesnt matter but she had checked her own heretige and it could be proven that there was no profit to her family from slavery. You are the one that needs to read if I am not mistaken lefty my arse.

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 15:26

Don't try and claim im not intelligent when you cant be bothered to read then accuse me of not reading. I think that makes you the unintelligent one. Plus I would like to know what is left wing about stating the fact that the UK was built on the back of the Empire and thats why it has wealth and influence today. Should I be more right wing and argree with fascist arseholes like Tommy Robinson.

hibeat · 21/07/2018 15:30

mummamamies. Yes of course my last remark was not clever. That was the point. Race is a social construct. On the biological level there is one race. End of. When you need blood you don't ask the colour of the person who gave it to you. I did refer to genes pools, so thank you I am not ignorant. Phenotypes and genotypes are two very different things, and a notion such as biraciality or being mixte race is stupidity in the face of science. Pigs are xenodonors nowadays, we get skin graft and heart valves from them. It is quite interesting that you did not get what I wrote. When a person uses the term Biracial or Mixte race to express beauty this person is using words that are irrelevant to describe something quite different : a social construct. I understand you needed to make your statement. I will not answer further, this is border trolling.

Blackness78 · 21/07/2018 15:34

and black women all sassy and hilarious

Huh? Confused

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 15:44

Oh it's you Gunnybear? I thought you didnt profit at all from Slavery and quote this can be proven. Now you want to pick the point that ordinary people did too so what does that make you? Make your mind up.

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 16:11

Dr Mengle used science and we know how that turned out. 'When you need blood you don't ask the colour of the person who gave it to you.' So why is the NHS trying to get more minorities to donate bone marrow as they are the ones left on the register dying. If we could just take bone marrow from everyone why would they have campaigns. Also some medications like blood pressure tablets are created differently as the cause of high blood pressure in Afro Caribbean people is different from that in Europeans. But I forgot there is no race in scientific terms. So all the research scientists looking into why only some people get various conditions should stop as according to you On the biological level there is one race. End of.

hibeat · 21/07/2018 17:54

Enlighten me. What exactly is Race ? I think I have defined that term. You haven't.
Is Afro Caribbean a race ? Or European ? Or Minorities ? Were you talking about Mengele ? What is exactly the purpose of throwing in his name in your argumentation ? Why are you utilising the fine definition of gene pools and making it synonymous with race ? Do you not know that your skin can tell a story, but your blood another, and yet your illness another. Having a special set of genes is to be celebrated, that's what's make you you. Unique. Are you sapiens sapiens ? Great, you're from the human race ! Now when you're done with taxonomy you can get into the more problematic sociological and historical issues of this word. But, with your previous tirade(s) are we exactly discussing the topic here ? I think we have all established that though racist, the comment uttered previously was in fact well meaning ? Do you have any objection to this ?
And what's with Mengele ?
Boo girl, I win. Godwin's law.
Sharpen your arguments. Stay on the topic. Sincerely.

mummamarnis · 21/07/2018 18:18

Thought you wasnt going to reply to the so called troll

GoatWithACoat · 21/07/2018 18:36

‘Ethinicity’ for the purpose of medical science is not the same as ‘race’.

mrsglowglow · 21/07/2018 20:21

I have often complimented my friends children's skin tone and colour. Shrilanken/Irish and also shrilanken/Filipino, italian/Irish, filipino/irish. Every one of their children has amazing skin. Unlike my pale, freckly burn too easily skin. I find the mixing of heritage or race or whatever beautiful.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 21/07/2018 20:26

A friend has had a baby girl who has coffee coloured skin and blond hair. Is it racist to say I find that combination pretty?

ElementalHalfLife · 21/07/2018 22:29

Why is it necessary to mention their color/color combination at all?

Why not just say what a pretty/cute child as you would to a pretty/cute white child? Why the need to expand?

As for 'praise for the exotic' - ffs! No. What the hell is wrong with you, picklepost ? We're talking about people here not some species of bird or breed of cat. Just stop it.

dudsville · 21/07/2018 22:36

Going back to the op, this is a line from a comedian in the 80's "I wish I was mixed race and beautiful". It was meant as irony highlighting the ridiculousness of the thinking of the time. I actually haven't heard it said since around that time.
