“Generally Mixed race children are the most adorable”

OP posts:
ChelleDawg2020 · 20/07/2018 08:31

Yes the statement in the OP is clearly racist, on two grounds.

  1. It implies that children of mixed heritage are aesthetically superior to children of single heritage.

  2. The term "mixed race" is highly offensive and should not be used. It implies that there is a "pure race" or "master race". Use the terms "mixed heritage", "person of colour" or just "BAME" as they are non-discriminatory. "Mixed race" is as outdated as "negro" or "mulatto" or "quadroon" or "coloured".

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 08:33

Just wondering have people had assumptions put on them that being mixrace means your from a lower social class? I think the class issue in the Uk is interesting especially now a royal has married someone mixrace. Or that because your mixed race you belong to a particular religion im not goading im just interested if people have experienced this.

Babymamamama · 20/07/2018 08:38

I agree mixed race shouldn't be used as a term at all. Preferable would be dual or mixed heritage. And certainly not to infer they are superior in any way (to black people). I think this is highly offensive.

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 08:40

I don’t think so. I’ve got mixed children and have had this said to me. I also generally, think mixed race children do look adorable so I see no issue with it. My partner doesn’t find it racist either.

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 08:42

Im mixed race and I dont find the term offensive. half caste yes and Mixed breed yes mongrel yes I dont find the mixed race label bad. If we are honest what does Afro Caribbean really mean a high pecentage of people from the Caribbean have White Asian and African ancestors the Afro part just depicts that your black but forgets the influence on the Carribean from Indians Chinese Scottish ect.

I’ve had comments from idiots saying I must have come from a broken home to marry a non white bloke, and that we live on a council estate (we don’t, and there wouldn’t be a problem if we did). Now those assumptions are racist, and quite inaccurate too.

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 20/07/2018 08:43

I don’t think it’s a racist thing to say. Racism is discrimination or prejudice against another race because you think yours are better, simply put. I actually agree (should I be ashamed?) I always think people of mixed race (I think) age beautifully, I can never tell thier age accurately! How is that racist? Its a complement surely?

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 08:44

What the? Why is mixed race offensive? My children are of multiple races...their races are...mixed. It’s not casting a judgement on being mixed or not mixed.

Monday55 · 20/07/2018 08:49

I think it's an opinion...just because race is being compared it's easy to label as racism. Some might choose an apple over a banana, another might choose meat over vegetables....same shit.! People need to lighten up and not be so narrow minded.

butlerswharf · 20/07/2018 09:06

I don't think the term mixed race is offensive and I have never heard anyone in real life suggest this either.

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 09:25

Dual heretige can be a awkward term as I think as of dual as meaning two what about people like me that have three ethnicities. We would be there forever writing eachone and least mixed race sounds more inclusive as it is what it is a mixture of race in one person we could go one forever thinking up terms to define any race I dont really care what term is in vogue at the moment I will identify myself as the term I choose not what is politically correct like I said some black people playfully call eachother the N word however wrong and degrading as it is but thats what they choose to identify with. The uk is too hung up on labels as it is people should be free to choose the terminology they see fit as someone will always will have a problem regardless.

MrPan · 20/07/2018 09:34

Don't think it's a racist statement.

And of course as has been noted, all babies are fucking ugly and should be kept out of the public gaze for at least the first year of life, then gradually introduced to polite society.

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 09:35

Babies with hair aren’t ugly. It’s the bald ones that look like old men.

MrPan · 20/07/2018 09:36

Hmm...maybe. It's a tough one. Grin

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 09:39

Honestly, I may be biased because mine had (and will have) dark hair but I think babies with hair are super cute Grin

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 09:40

That is interesting princesspear I have found this too and that is worse than people saying mixed race kids are cute by far. I find some stereotypes are class related more than race like white people using chav to describe poorer white people or if you have a St Georges flag up your a racist. I have had this assumption that mixed race people are just Black anyway or because we may have some black heretige we fall into the same stereotypes people have of black people. People are shocked when I say im from a supposably affluent area as if because im mixed I should be of a lower social standing it is sad. There is so much division within races let alone from other races on the outside that we will always have a undercurrent of misunderstandings and belief based on stereotype. Education is key to this I remember when the statistics came out that white working class boys do worse in school than black boys instead of looking at why this is it became all about race and didnt tackle the class issue at all.

HyacinthBuffet · 20/07/2018 09:41

@FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast

but we are all the same race aren't we? (clue -"human")

Oh, wow thanks for the patronising answer. To you it may be as simple as being “human”, but my experiences growing up mixed race showed me differently.

Where were you with your witty remarks when white people were calling me and my mum “black bitches” in the street? Or when white people would compare their skin to mine when they were tanned and say “Oh! I’m almost as dark as you!” Or when I’d visit my mum’s country and black people would say to my mother “she’s so pale you can’t even tell she’s yours”?

IMO race is a social construct. Thanks for your “clue” but it does absolutely nothing to help.

SayNoToCarrots · 20/07/2018 09:45

This reminds me of a history class in year 7 as one of the two non-white people in the class. We were doing slavery, and the subject of the masters of the house impregnating the slaves came up. My history teacher helpfully declared that she thought that mixed race children had the best of both worlds, and were really quite beautiful. Everyone looked at me, with my nhs glasses, buck teeth, acne and hair I didn't quite know what to do with.

Thanks miss.

LemonysSnicket · 20/07/2018 09:47

Well it's kind of true... the mixing of more widely spread genes means they tend to have more good genes to pick from. They also have better immune systems btw ...

PrincessPear · 20/07/2018 09:48

mummamaris yeah I agree class is far more of an issue that divides people. People focus on race without looking at socioeconomic factors or class issues and they miss the picture.

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 09:54

I agree with you HyacinthBuffet

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 10:02

Defiantly princess pear dont even get my started on the windrush scandal. Its like a slap in the face of thanks for helping to build up the Uk after the war but now your elderly you can piss off back home even though you have built up a life in the Uk but your not of a high enough social standing to be considered to be of any importance.

mummamarnis · 20/07/2018 10:10

Yes say no to carrots when they teach slavery sometimes this view does come across that mixed raced slaves where somewhat lucky no mention that black slaves were often raped by their slave masters then the products of the rape where sometimes outcasts and abandoned. No mention of the hardships mixed race slaves might have faced as they are seen as lucky. Like in South Africa apartheid and America people dont mention the sometimes negative past of mixrace people during those eras.

UneMoonit · 20/07/2018 10:10

Sounds a bit American to me.

How about we simply call things what they are when discussing those specific things in a polite manner and treat people equally/with decency.

Seems a much better system than the alternative, which seems to be (from what i can tell) obsessively changing the language you use all the time while actually staying entrenched prejudiced.

VauxhallVectra · 20/07/2018 10:15

Yes it's racist. It's singling out a particular group of children because of their race. Mixed race people are hugely fetishised and this starts in childhood with innocent comments like this.
