To not understand why (and be against) “improved sizing”

So, I don’t know if this is just in Primark or everywhere will be taking it on but I’m a bit shocked that the sizing for clothes is being re-marked. For example a 10-12 which was previously medium will now be small, 8-10 XS etc.

This feels like an excuse to ignore true sizing and doesn’t seem healthy! Tbh it reminds me of the people who try to push the “Marilyn monroe was a size 16 and perfectly healthy”. But she wasn’t was she, not a size 16 now anyway!!!

I feel like sizing is already generous and changing it to make people appear even smaller when they haven’t changed isn’t good for accountability for the fact that obesity is an ever growing crisis.

I don’t agree that my “new” size reflects my actual size and I’m sure this is going to be the same for many people.

I just don’t see what the point was in doing it! Hmm

Eleanor Actually I can agree with that! They’re pretty shit at having all of one size being the same bloody size lol.

Can anyone link to that online shop that had women's sizes labelled as 'healthy' and 'slim' instead of using actual numbers?

That one had me in stitches.

hungryhippo90 · 19/07/2018 14:50

Yeah I was pretty annoyed by this.
I went to pick up DD a top, I usually buy a M from primark which I think is usually a 10-12, little big but it allows for if I shrink it.

I picked up an M recently, got home to realise the M is a new and improved sized garment so a 12-14. So I had to return to exchange it.

Fairly happy that I’ll be able to go up a size in primark for myself if the fit is a bit small with them going up to 22-24 but I don’t agree with them changing the sizes to make it appear people aren’t getting bigger.

SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 14:51

Tectonic. I have a waist and boobs and hips which is one reason I don’t agree with being labelled XS! If I was truly considered “XS” I wouldn’t have very much of those things!

Magic. Seriously!? Shock

OK so because you've got medical issues, you are allowed to look down on other women who don't have medical issues and are larger than a size 8-10? Not sure how this is taking some sort of high ground here.

crunchymint · 19/07/2018 14:54

I don't care either. Just wish everyone used the same measurements.

PrincessPear · 19/07/2018 14:55

Who’s looking down on anyone?

SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 14:55

You’re really a bit strange, I haven’t looked down on anyone.

Do you think people who are smaller are not allowed to be annoyed at being labelled a size they’re not? Like I’m actively moaning here that these sizes will make it seem like I’m smaller than I am, yet you think this thread is looking down at you because...?

I don’t look down on people because of their size, however you can’t deny there IS and obesity epidemic and changing sizes to be even more generous just isn’t healthy.

The men's sizing in Primark is just as bad, shirts go by collar sizes (although I'm not sure how yoh can measure a whole man by the size of his neck!)- DH got two shirts there once and didn't try them as they were both the same size as another he had that fit him OK- one was huge and baggy and the other was too tight! Apart from the neck. They both fit his neck! Grin

SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 14:56

You said by the “naturally slim” so I told you I wasn’t “naturally”.

Hmm.

OP posts:
SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 14:58

Yeah DP is really overweight and is a medium in some Tshirts but won’t fit some bottoms in their largest size, despite having normalise weight looking legs and all the weight being on top. It’s a bit bizarre!

Thanks for posting the article SchrodingersMeowth !

The relationship between BMI and dress size is pretty much unfathomable, probably because of the ridiculous variation in sizing more than bones or whatever. I've seen posts by people who say they are the same height and size as me but BMI varying significantly.

Jeans often have waist and hip size labelling but not all brands are true to those measurements, and men complain about too about clothes getting bigger at the same size. (I think collar size on shirts is bad for that) It's not as bad though as the randomness of women's sizing, ordering 3 sizes because you've no bloody idea which will fit.

aperolspritzplease · 19/07/2018 15:01

It's bonkers. I'm now a 12 in sainsburys and m and s. I'm really really not - I'm a 16.

I find a trip to uniqlo, Zara, massimo Dutti soon remjnds me what size my arse actually is.

Why can't they do it by actual size like men's trousers - would make so much more sense.

Storm4star · 19/07/2018 15:01

One time I was in Japan and needed a skirt. At the time I was a size 12 here. But over there I needed to go to one of their "plus size" stores to find one to fit. Bought one, took it back to my place and then saw the label. It said "Greedy Girl" on it! That didn't make me feel great! Blush

I do wish sizing was consistent across all stores here. It's a pain always having to try something on to make sure it fits.

MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:01

Can someone tell me what the primark knickers are like. I was a bit unsure as they had 6-8 or 10-12. I would put my bum in a size 8 or size 8-10 normally and I don't want my knickers too big or too small.
They don't let you return knickers even if unopened IIRC.
Should I buy my knix elsewhere?

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2018 15:02

As a fat person, I'm well aware that I'm fat. Has nothing to do with what size an item of clothing claims to be.

specialsubject · 19/07/2018 15:05

I very rarely shop for clothes, partly because of this (also because I have enough and it is really boring) - but I would love it if clothes were labelled by actual measurements.

The assumption is that all females are pathetic saddos who can't cope with facts. My size is what it is, and I would like to buy clothes that size without spending hours in stinking hot shops.

Petalbird · 19/07/2018 15:06

As long as primark keep selling size 6 tops I don't mind what they call them I just need tops that fit for work

pennycarbonara · 19/07/2018 15:07

People who are healthy at a BMI of 19, and who would have looked perfectly average a few decades ago shouldn't have to be buying sizes labelled 00 or whatever. It does reflect an imbalance.

Given how unusual stats show it is for actually obese people to lose a lot of weight and keep it off, people could really do with being more alert to when they are becoming slightly overweight and changing their eating and exercise habits in response. Clothing sizing is something that's more likely to alert people to that happening.

SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 15:07

Mike. I don’t like them, precisely because they jump sizes. I tend to buy undiz (the brand) when I’m in France.

Questionable You might have an appropriate relationship with not using size to work out weight/BMI/general fitness but a lot of other women have and will use this to determine if they are a “normal” size or not because of media/social media etc, especially younger girls and women.

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:07

Vanity sizing is a PITA. If you order online you end up having to return the items.

SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 15:09

Petal This was along the lines of what I said to DP in the shop yesterday. How long until perfectly acceptable sizes become “outsized” and not sold because I guess, they’re not the norm? The new sizing makes it more inclusive for people who are bigger while making the smaller end seem like their sizing is not normal.

OP posts:
SchrodingersMeowth · 19/07/2018 15:11

“Mike” The only clothes I’ll buy online are from EBay from brands I know the sizing generally fits well across the range. Generally terrified of buying online out with that! And I’m sure that’s the same for people of most sizes

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 19/07/2018 15:12

Some companies make the children's clothes on the small size so that children end up buying a small adult size.
