D-this, D-that, D-the other?

Am I the only one who finds
D-this and D-that really confusing?

There are so, so many Ds that threads (certainly on here) are so hard to follow.
What's wrong with husband, daughter, wife, mother etc etc?

I mean? Sometimes, it's not even a 'dear' someone a person is talking about. It's even got to the point where it's 'D-ex Husband' or 'D-Mother I would not cross the road to spit on'.

So, apart from the 'D' not always (or even usually) being true, it makes threads so very hard to follow.

Or, is it just DM?

You'll get used to it.

Zoflorabore · 19/07/2018 03:24

Welcome to MN Grin

melonscoffer · 19/07/2018 03:24

Dear Dear Me/ or DDM
I can't stand it either. I usually type the full Mother , Son , Husband etc.
I don't put the Dear in front of it as it makes me faintly queasy.

mathanxiety · 19/07/2018 03:30

...says she, posting in AIBU...

YABU.

The reason these abbreviations are used is because they are shorter. Plenty of times the acronym STBXH or W is used, as well as just the letter H to indicate that he is no longer D(ear).

Rebecca36 · 19/07/2018 03:31

It does seem rather childish to me but I'm fairly new here and have sort of got used to it (now I've worked out what it means). Not always necessary to use those abbreviations in my opinion.

ICJump · 19/07/2018 03:38

It’s a pretty long standing internet language. Maybe the internet isn’t for you. HTH

thor86 · 19/07/2018 03:38

No, it's silly. Especially as people will use the same acronym for different meanings.

DS - dear son, dear sister
DBF - dear boyfriend, dear best friend
DTD- dear twin daughter, doing the deed

Never mind the frequent typos.

IAmNotAWitch · 19/07/2018 03:49

Welcome to the Internet.

OnThisHill · 19/07/2018 04:09

How funny! So far...

Told I'll get used to it.
Been scolded for posting in AIBU...
Had abbreviation defined for me...
Sarcastically welcomed to the internet..
Schooled in the use of 'STBXH' (but
I genuinely don't know what that means)...

Thanks all, it was just a light-hearted question, really.

What a VFB you are. [passive aggressive emoji]

OP posts:
Bellagio40 · 19/07/2018 04:31

I don't know what VFB is - Very Fine Bunch? But STBXH is Soon To Be Ex Husband.

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 19/07/2018 04:33

Light-hearted in AIBU? lol

echt · 19/07/2018 04:43

"Scolded"? who has scolded you?

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 19/07/2018 04:46

These aren't just from Mumsnet but are used on any Internet forum. Can people really not tell the difference between "DTD last night, could I be pregnant" and DTD has split up with her boyfriend and is really upset"?

mathanxiety · 19/07/2018 04:48

You weren't 'scolded' for posting in AIBU, just for accepting the shorthand 'AIBU' while objecting to the D. Lack of consistency, in other words.

STBXH is soon to be ex husband.

The D thing is all over the internet, btw.
So is STBXH.

Fightthebear · 19/07/2018 04:58

Every organisation has it’s own jargon. It’s a lot quicker than typing the words out in full and rarely ambiguous in meaning.

LunaMay · 19/07/2018 05:15

It's been fairly standard across forums for years, hardly just a MNet thing.

Shitonthebloodything · 19/07/2018 05:19

Yanbu

I hate it.

borntobequiet · 19/07/2018 05:27

Think of it as a little mental exercise, very good for the ageing brain.

FiveShelties · 19/07/2018 05:39

YANBU.

I find it really weird when people post about their dear something and write about how much they hate them!

IAmNotAWitch · 19/07/2018 05:42

Lots of words start with "D":

Dear, Darling, Damned, Dickhead, Dumb, Delightful, Daft etc.

I just adjust the "D" in my head as appropriate.

KinkyAfro · 19/07/2018 05:55

It is weird, I've never heard anyone refer to dear husband or dear son in 'real' conversation. Strange how it's caught on

strawberrisc · 19/07/2018 05:57

I’ve been on forums for years and other than “OP” I’ve always found them irritating! Especially when someone chucks a home made one in for SAG (shits and giggles)

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/07/2018 06:00

Well you know you’ve been on MN too long when in real life you refer to your daughter as “dd” rather than her name to work colleagues!

Sinkingswimmer · 19/07/2018 06:00

YANBU but it's how it's done here. Nothing to stop anyone using the normal words though.
While we are on the subject, can anyone tell me what TL:DR stands for?

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon · 19/07/2018 06:07

If it amuses you, when I first joined I though STBXH was short for “Shoot the bastard ex-husband”. Given the context in which it’s usually used, I still prefer my version! Much more fun than LTB Grin
