Help! I have one dd. My mil has lived with us since we have been married.

She is a very strong woman and overruled me on everything. She sends me to bed if I sneeze.

When dd was 2 dh pissed off capturing butterflies in Africa and I havnt heard off him for years. Bastard. So mil got friendly with a wierd lady next door. She has big hair coils round her ears, writes books and has lots of kids.

I am concerned she is also involved in modern slavery as she has a woman living with her called Anna who does everything.

Anyway mil and this wierd Jo woman have colluded to send dd to a boarding school.

Aibu to just want to move away with dd. Start again and have some fun? Grin

Guess the book and keep going. Grin

Screaming, yes, I think those were both guessed. I do have a couple of others still unguessed, though, and there are several others too, I suspect.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 16:39

Thanks for filling that in, Toffee. I think I may have read/seen that, but a long, long time ago.

iismum, is that a Trollope novel?

ScrambledSmegs · 19/07/2018 16:40

Iismum Love in a Cold Climate!

iismum · 19/07/2018 16:41

Scrambled had got it! But Gasp has inspired me ...

iismum · 19/07/2018 16:44

I'm the only son and heir (though I have hordes of sisters) to a large estate. Unfortunately, my father's more or less run it into the ground and there's no money left. I'm supposed to be marrying for money to save the estate but my heart's not really in it. I'm actually in love with the ward of our family doctor - even though she's penniless and nobody really knows who her parents are. WIBU to marry her? It would be so great if she randomly and totally unexpectedly turned out to be the heiress of a huge fortune, but I guess that's not likely!

ScrambledSmegs · 19/07/2018 16:50

My children attend a local school with a marvellous reputation, we’re very lucky that they got places. I’m rather worried though because the boys don’t seem to be responding to the school as well as other children - they’re not learning much and seem to be in trouble a lot. A lovely girl has come to live with us and she says the headmaster is a marvellous man and this is the best school she’s ever been to, so clearly its not the school’s fault.

I’ve been in to speak to the headmaster several times but I honestly can’t remember what we discussed! He is absolutely brilliant though and I’m sure the country will be so much better run once he takes charge.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 16:52

Scrambled, The Demon Headmaster.

iismum, Doctor Thorne?

Cablestitch · 19/07/2018 16:52

Mip's is The New Rector, from the Turnham Malpas series.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/07/2018 16:53

Yes! That must make you about the same age as me, Gaspode Grin

Lancelottie · 19/07/2018 16:53

Demon Headmaster books, Scrambled?

Oops, I really should do some work.

TokenBritPoshOfCourse · 19/07/2018 16:54

None of mine are Dracula, sorry!

ThomasNightingale · 19/07/2018 16:59

Scrambled meant mine, which was indeed Lucy Westenra. Her staggeringly smug letters about her three proposals are my favourite bit of Dracula.

Drudge has rather brilliantly kept to the original brief of MILs and is Marge Simpson.

Seasawride · 19/07/2018 17:00

I have taken a post in a girls school. It’s my dream job but there’s a few hitches. One girl in particular pisses me off she’s so self confident. I told the woman who lives next door how much she pissed me off but she looked shocked.

Anyway problem is this girl saved my life yesterday and I suppose I will have to say thanks!

Still can’t bear her to be honest what shall I do.

I think it makes my children the same age as you, Scrambled. Grin It was on TV when they were at primary school.

ScrambledSmegs · 19/07/2018 17:04

Sorry Thomas and Token, I must have been scrolling so fast I muddled you both up Blush

ScreamingValenta · 19/07/2018 17:05

I'll continue trawling Smile

In the meantime ...

The professor and I didn't always see eye-to-eye - in fact, he nearly chucked me out of his lab because he disliked my political activities. But I saw no reason not to trust his work on diffraction when he gave me a photo to use in my doctoral thesis.

I couldn't believe it when some chaps in America said the results were theoretically impossible. The old fool had only gone and doctored the photo! The professor's kicked the bucket now, and the College have slung me out of my Fellowship. I think they always had it in for me, especially the Bursar - he's just bitter because he never got into the Royal Society.

Good job I've got a decent lawyer on my side - although he's an ex-Fellow too, so I'm not sure I trust him either.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 17:09

Oh, well done, Drudge! I see that now.

I used to live rough near a university. I've never been quite the same since, and it's put a wedge between me and others of my kind. Nobody seems to be able to grasp my knowledge and abilities, which admittedly are at odds with my appearance. I seem to fall between two groups. I have this irritating need for approval from one lot, but I also want to run with the pack.

margotsdevil · 19/07/2018 17:10

@Seasawride the new mistress at the chalet school Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 17:11

Seasawride, that's another Chalet School one, isn't it! Bottomless pit as far as this thread is concerned. Grin

Lancelottie · 19/07/2018 17:17

Um, Gaspode, I think you're Gaspode...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/07/2018 17:29

Woof bloody woof! Grin

Seasawride · 19/07/2018 17:37

I have a younger sister who is very lovely, but very silly. Our mother is not much better. Dsis has taken up with a young nobleman who has a reputation for being very wild and reckless. I think he is planning to entice her to run away with him. Of course he has no intention of marrying her and she will be ruined, but she won't listen to me. Should I take drastic action to save my sister's reputation?

VanillaSugar · 19/07/2018 17:49

My bf has a friend whose uncle disappeared for years and then suddenly reappeared without having aged. He's been a bit odd ever since and now has persuaded my bf and his friend to undertake some ridiculous journey. I said to be "give me a ring when you get there" and the friend paled all the way down to his furry feet and quaked "don't mention the ring

......

Precious "

AIBU to LTB?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 19/07/2018 17:55

My one was The Glass Lake yes, I love this thread but I can't keep up with what's solved and what's not.

My wife was having an affair and wanted a divorce, the times being what they are, if she was to blame she'd be disgraced socially. It only really matters that the wife comes out of a divorce unscathed not the husband so I staged a dalliance with a prostitute to make her life easier.

I ended up a captive in the Amazon and AIBU that no one cares enough to search for me and just presumes I'm dead ?

Such a fucking weird book
