To wonder just why Meghan seems so unpopular?

Just that really. I obviously don’t buy the magazines that must print all the insider gossip. From what I’ve seen of her I’ve liked, and felt some sympathy for her. Am I wrong?

I say, whatever else the woman is expected to do as part of her role as wife and Duchess, she does not owe it to the public to make a visit to her father! She lived it; we are only onlookers who may have an opinion but will never know everything that happened between them. I suppose someone should have made a point of filming her entire life so we can review it and vote over the phone "Visit father Yes/No", and then of course she would have to do that thing because The People Have Spoken Hmm

lightonthewater · 19/07/2018 17:47

I wonder if the people who are criticising her here would put up with this from their own family? Her father was explicitly asked NOT to speak to the press when they told him of their engagement. What does he do? Starts faking photos and speaking to the press. Directing a dialogue with his daughter through the press. Then there is the will he won't he debacle over the wedding. Now he is conducting a campaign, complaining about the RF and painting himself as a victim. I don't think so. He's a rotten apple, like his daughter and son. His son did not speak to him for years and I think he also fell out with Samantha for a while. Meghan also had a troubled relationship with him before she met Harry. She has probably tried her best with a toxic family, and has now decided that her Dad is a liability. He clearly can't keep his trap shut, and has no idea of what loyalty and integrity is. Sharon Osborne is blasting him for having a drink problem. Maybe he does. She should know, she's seen addiction of all sorts close up.

As for wearing less expensive outfits, that would upset people too: hey, that's not how duchesses dress, she looks like a pleb, is she pocketing the difference etc. Down to earth doesn't have to mean dressing cheap.

lightonthewater · 19/07/2018 17:54

Exactly Annie. If she wore an outfit from H and M, what do you think the result would be?

I love that she's injected a bit of freshness and diversity to the RF. The wedding was fantastic and for such an event there was massive amount of personality in it. But personally I haven't been keen on her since the engagement photos. There was something about the choice of wearing a 60k dress that didn't sit well. It just seemed very ill judged, wearing something like that on one of your first "royal" appearances when people are relying on food banks and shitting themselves about the financial impact of Brexit and you love banging on about your charity work with poor girls in India. St Kate went with a Reiss shirt and a dress that, whilst designer, cost 1% of the price. Someone should have picked up on that and advised her to keep it for another occasion.

She has made a few minor missteps with protocol which the press love to run stories on. Commenting on the Irish Referendum result (which I agreed with but it's a big no-no for the RF) and some other incidents that someone pointed out above. Conversely we didn't get the same stories when Kate started being wheeled out, and I wonder if that's because she was effectively "in training" for her role long before their engagement. If that's the case it really is very unfair to compare the two of them. It feels though that Kate had more help and guidance than Meghan has had (see also 60k dress above). We're getting to see more personality but it does open her up to criticism, ill-founded or otherwise.

Her family are nuts but that's not her fault and it must be incredibly embarrassing and stressful for her not knowing what they're going to come out with next. You'd have though they'd have shut up by now but apparently not.

Princess Anne is often said to be the most popular member of the Royal family for being hard working and down to earth, she has never been one to dress with extravagance. Kate too has had a lot of praise for her high street outfits. I feel Meghan is needing the confidence that the expensive clothes bring a little at the moment but during her engagement she wore M&S and jeans. There really is no need for the royal family to always dress as if they are attending a society wedding, it looks a bit odd when our politicians and most celebrities dress in a more down to earth way.

Princess1066 · 30/07/2018 03:38

Princess1066 · 30/07/2018 03:47

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 30/07/2018 03:59

""but it was only ever Camila"

That's not the case. But the '3 of us in his marriage" was such a catchy line that the others were effectively airbrushed out. One occasionally still gets mentioned, but that's abiut it."

Oh like James Hewitt and will Carling???????????? Yes the others on saint Diana's side are completely airbrushed YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSS

Unless of course it was prince charles that had an affair with James Hewitt and some how managed to get pregnant with harry so people still to this day laugh that harry isn't Diana's but James Hewitts (btw I'm aware that Diana hadn't even met Hewitt when harry was conceived and harry is the spitting image of Prince Charles, with Charles. Spencer's colouring) and it was actually prince Charles will carling had been shagging when he was caught sneaking out of Kensington palace. I guess it must have been because saint Diana did nothing wrong it was all Charles no camilia yessss

Sorry this saint hood annoys me she wasn't who people think she was

Rebecca36 · 30/07/2018 04:02

She is far from unpopular.

PenelopeFlintstone · 30/07/2018 04:37

She's not unpopular here in Australia.

LanguidLobster · 30/07/2018 04:46

I don't think she's unpopular.

You might get that impression if you read the comments section of some UK news sites however...

I was really surprised by her father, I hope he goes quiet now

strawberrisc · 30/07/2018 05:11

If you read the online >whispers very quietly< Daily Fail - go to any Meghan story, filter to “Top Comments”. She is loathed by the readers of the gutter press.

Movablefeast · 30/07/2018 05:34

Yes, I am overseas and read many British papers online and have been very startled at how much downright hatred and incredibly negative judgement of Meghan there is in the comments section of any articles about her.

I just don't understand what she has done that infuriates these readers so much. They have a narrative that she is a social-climber who has ruthlessly cut people out of her life when they are no use to her any longer but I have no idea where they have the evidence for this back story. They absolutely relish every nasty put down. It is quite disturbing and does seem a very over-the-top reaction and frankly racist.

This scheming opportunistic woman will never be accepted by the british people
