The Trump-Putin Summit in Helsinki, coming so soon after Trump’s ally-crumbling display in Britain and at the EU, is still sinking in. Let’s just say: he’s in all kinds of shit. All the kompromat.

Ha Gump I have to vent somewhere or we'd probably now be on our 5th flatscreen!

Remember the movie Independence Day and the bit about 'plausible deniability'? Well we now have 'plausible LIE-ability'. The GOP and the Scrotus groupies will buy the would/wouldn't lie hook, line, and sinker.

Once again, our hopes for some type of watershed moment are dashed. He's managed to turn our 'Ah HA!' moment into another 'Oh fuck no!' moment.

Trump spelling makes this authentic.

The witnesses will be pleading the 5th so as not to incriminate themselves. By granting immunity they can speak without charges.

Mueller must believe their testimony against manafort far more important than any charges the witnesses may have had levelled at them.

Previously not part of this case though....bet his daughter is one!

ohmymimi · 17/07/2018 20:49

Gump, yes. Stating the obvious,of course, it's all lies, from a liar and WH who everyone * knows lies, with utter facility, as routine. So it's just cover and everyone knows it's just cover. Bloody galling.
*Cult45 excepted, of course.

ginandtonicformeplease · 17/07/2018 21:01

Thanks for the new thread. I had to take a break from them as my new colleague is not only a Trump obsessive but also a conspiracy theorist. It's an awful combination that makes me want to reach for the Wineby 10am.

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 21:03

Haha Across. I feel for you. Brexit is similar and I'm avoiding it now because it made me feel so powerless.

I used to be a civil servant and have contributed my share of spin and plausible deniability, but that was in another age when people played by proper rules.

So as you were then, until Mueller drops another indictment soon please

AcrossthePond55 · 17/07/2018 21:11

gin Welcome to the "EEEEK! There's a Trumpster in my life!!! Club". The club that no one joins voluntarily and where every member drinks too much. Our club motto; "Pour me another one, Barkeep, and make it a double. I'm going in". Grin

AcrossthePond55 · 17/07/2018 21:16

Me too, Gump. I'm retired US Civil Service (35 years). I agree the spin & etc that used to go on was basically to make something that was true but unpalatable, more palatable. Now it's just out and out lies with an ulterior motive.

I'm so glad that I retired when I did. Barack Obama's signature is on my retirement certificate and official letter of 'goodbye' (although I'm sure it's a stamp of his signature). If I was retiring now and Scrotus' signature was on them, I'd fucking burn them.

Natsku · 17/07/2018 21:17

Checking in to follow, well sort of follow, bits and pieces anyway. Much nicer catching up on the news on this thread than searching through the actual news.

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 21:20

33 years here... I'm sure we were both child prodigies Wink

And how lovely to have Obama's signature on your letter. I hope he speaks up again soon.

It's not just trusting the Orange Oaf over what they see and hear; they parse what they see and hear through the distorting prism of their own beliefs and needs.
Jim Acosta
@Acosta
Like on Charlottesville and now on Helsinki,Trump again hoping his supporters don’t trust their own eyes and ears. But trust him.

@Acosta
On disastrous Helsinki performance, Trump clarifies comments, vows to secure elections, blames democrats, suggests critics are colluding with media (hopes GOP calms down)

@Acosta

Trump on negative coverage of Helsinki: “I said ‘what’s going on. What’s the big deal?’l

Once again, our hopes for some type of watershed moment are dashed. He's managed to turn our 'Ah HA!' moment into another 'Oh fuck no!' moment.

No. No no nopity nope no.

Look, supposing he had said "I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be Russia"? That wouldn't get him off. It's so damning in its faintness that there's almost no difference which version he trundled out.

His message after the fact isn't, "I meant XB, not XA,"
it's "You got me wrong, nothing to see here, move along."

And that's not true.

This is still a gotcha. We just have to not let him use the "misspoke" crap as a pivot out of the whole presser. We need to keep hold of the fact that Trump was wavery and uncertain about whether he believed his own IC or the foreign adversary. That he repeated Putin's points for him. That he did not respond when reporters asked him if he would condemn Mr Putin.

PerkingFaintly · 17/07/2018 22:02

Acosta's tweet ought to have read:

@ Acosta**
On disastrous Helsinki performance, Trump makes cosmetic change to comments, vows to secure elections, blames democrats, suggests critics are colluding with media (hopes GOP calms down)

annandale · 17/07/2018 22:05

Come on Boris. Explain to us small people how this proves that Trump is a great negotiator and would absolutely sort out trade deals for us. Explain how you know Trump is so good at this sort of thing.

ohmymimi · 17/07/2018 22:12

There's no mop big enough for this, but I can visualise him in a headscarf with a fag hanging out of his mouth. Char, char, char :
'Trump does clean-up after Putin fiasco.
Even the Wall Street Journal described the president's appearance alongside his Russian counterpart.'
www.politico.com/story/2018/07/17/trump-putin-criticism-reaction-725975

He'll scrub at it hard to remove the stain, but it's indelible

'Pompeo to testify in Senate after criticism of Trump-Putin summit.'
www.politico.com/story/2018/07/17/trump-putin-summit-pompeo-senate-testimony-726305

AcrossthePond55 · 17/07/2018 22:21

I agree Perking, and those of us who see him for what he is will do that. We won't let go, we'll remember the lies. And it will fuel us to continue to resist But the GOP members of the House and Senate are going to take the easy way out and say "It's OK, see, he just misspoke!" rather than stand up, point fingers, and take any action. And those are the people we really need to say "Ah HA!".

It's going to be business as usual in Congress. I haven't given up, don't get me wrong. It's just that what I had hoped would be a real turning point, well, isn't.

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 22:46

Asked on Fox News whether he buys Trump's "wouldn't" revision, Sen. Rob Portman says he takes the president at his word.

https://twitter.com/ErikWemple/status/1019317254914273281

Just to prove the point. Wink

I've just popped in so apologies if it's been posted but Mike Pompeo is before Senate Foreign Relations Committee next Wed as Senate feels unsighted on the private discussions/deals done at NATO and in Helsinki.

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 22:48

Obvious but still amusing

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 22:52

Joe Walsh an otherwise obnoxious individual is holding out. This was written after the press briefing.

https://twitter.com/WalshFreedom/status/1019318072832872448

Why yesterday was such a big deal:

Most Americans don't quite get the whole Russia thing. Trump has done a great job of confusing & distracting.

But most Americans get when an American president sides with a Russian dictator over his own country. We understand what that means.

Gumpendorf · 17/07/2018 22:56

And an excellent summary of where we are:

twitter.com/Mikel_Jollett/status/1019319858540863488

So the current White House position is:

Russia DID attack American democracy but the Russia investigation is a "witch hunt" which is why Trump believes Putin that it never happened even though he believes his intelligence people despite the fact that it's all just fake news.
