The Trump-Putin Summit in Helsinki, coming so soon after Trump’s ally-crumbling display in Britain and at the EU, is still sinking in. Let’s just say: he’s in all kinds of shit. All the kompromat.

www.scotsman.com/news/politics/donald-trump-s-turnberry-firm-paid-50-000-by-us-government-for-weekend-visit-1-4770069

Over £50k paid to his company for him to play golf and advertise his business.

It's a small thing compared to the rest of the omnishambles trip and the misspoke backtracking.

cozietoesie · 17/07/2018 23:58

I'm afraid he does have access to it, Gump. Sad

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 18/07/2018 01:28

It's just that what I had hoped would be a real turning point, well, isn't

I'm starting to wonder what on earth the turning point - if there ever is one - will look like.

Thanks for the new thread. Who knows where we'll be by the end of this one?

TheClaws · 18/07/2018 01:34

The whole would/wouldn’t backflip Trump executed is just gobsmacking. He is just ... so far from Obama. And such a small, small man.

'Queen Elizabeth wore a brooch given to her by former President Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama on the day President Trump landed in the U.K., according to multiple reports.'

ohmymimi · 18/07/2018 07:27

lion, the Russians have the advantage of a transcript from their recording of the one to one, no doubt.
I haven't read up on other posts yet, but that T.'s translator surely must give evidence to Congress. This is too important.

ohmymimi · 18/07/2018 07:34

I heard the comments of Portman, Rubio and one other, whom I don't recall, using T.'s follow up mash up as cover, just as intended. Captains courageous they ain't.

Gumpendorf · 18/07/2018 07:36

Hello cozie lovely to see you.

Wasn't there something about a routing button for one President - Reagan when he had dementia? The signal had to be confirmed as genuine by another person? I hope something similar is in place here too.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 18/07/2018 07:37

Anyone else think joking that the intelligence community turned the lights off on you, two seconds after you tried to say you believe and trust in them, is an epic fail?

ohmymimi · 18/07/2018 07:40

Oh, and props to QE2's brooch trolling. Subtly classy.

Gumpendorf · 18/07/2018 07:45

I had a look at later posts from Lucian Kim because I was surprised his tweet hadn't been picked up more. He clarifies that it may be some internal Russian issue.

In other words, Russian MoD's cryptic statement on Trump-Putin "agreements" may tell us more about MoD's relations with Foreign Ministry and Kremlin than about what actually transpired in Helsinki.

ohmymimi · 18/07/2018 07:48

Hulks, yes, but unsurprising that he felt comfortable quipping that. 'Epic Failure' should be carved on his headstone.

ohmymimi · 18/07/2018 07:54

Thanks, Gump, that's a good insight:
@Lucian_Kim
Also note the Russian MoD statement uses a word that can be translated as "agreements" or "understandings." So MoD could be jumping gun, especially as Russian diplomats were at summit, not Russian generals.

Replying to @DefTechPat and @Lucian_Kim
you should also make a clear difference between договоренности and договор in Russian. MoD refers to verbal договорённости to restart co-operation with US on issues of security- there is no договор between US and Russia other than the one used earlier and suspended by Obama

But, he's no amateur at evil.
And, Stanley reeling out the misjudgements, misdeeds and misdemeanors of past presidents as evidence this is no 'darkest hour', and to frame El Pres against those, is just contributing to a dangerous normalisation - from an historian who starts his piece:
'Sometimes, I'm more alarmed by people's exaggerated reactions to Donald Trump than by Trump himself.'

Stanley reeling out the misjudgements, misdeeds and misdemeanors of past presidents as evidence this is no 'darkest hour',

Apologists will apologize. What a flippant and ill-thought out article.

How can you compare Rumsfeld shaking hands with Sadam Hussain to the American President saying he believed the Russian President over his own intelligence community? How can you say Regan offering a chance at peace to the USSR is the same as what just happened in Helsinki. It boggles the mind.

Lweji · 18/07/2018 08:40

Although there is a whiff of exaggeration in relation to Trump, sometimes, that CNN opinion piece is rather stupid.

Firstly, we (the west) are in a state of war with Russia. The US was just recently attacked, ffs.

Any amateur would ask for advice from experienced people.
Through sheer stupidity or dark reasons, this President has done a huge disservice to his own country and his own people.

BTW, that W quote could be taken either way. Wink It's cleverly written not to give an opinion away.

Lweji · 18/07/2018 08:50

OTOH, at CNN:

"Damage control, the president claims he misspoke once in his disastrous summit with Putin," Burnett said on CNN. "Did the dog eat his homework too?"

From lionheart's link:

Cambridge Analytica's Facebook data was accessed from Russia, MP says
money.cnn.com/2018/07/17/technology/cambridge-analytica-data-facebook-russia/index.html

Damian Collins, the Conservative MP leading a British parliamentary investigation into online disinformation, told CNN that a British investigation found evidence that the data, collected by Professor Aleksandr Kogan on behalf of Cambridge Analytica, had been accessed from Russia and other countries. The discovery was made by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), Britain's data protection authority, Collins said.

"I think what we want to know now is who were those people and what access did they have, and were they actually able to take some of that data themselves and use it for whatever things they wanted," Collins said.
[...]
Kogan denies handing over the Facebook data he gathered for Cambridge Analytica to any Russian entity, saying it is possible that someone in Russia could have accessed data from his computer without his knowledge. "On my side, I am not aware of any Russian entity with access to my data," he added. He didn't rule out that he may have inadvertently exposed the data while in Russia.

Responding to Collins' comments, Kogan told CNN, "I don't know what could have happened to the data once I handed it over to Cambridge Analytica so it is difficult for me to speculate."

Kogan said he would need to see more information before commenting further, adding, "This could be really innocuous, it could be as simple as an SCL (Cambridge Analytica's British parent company) representative was in Russia and they remotely access the server to see some of the files."

A reposting of Margaret Sullivan's perspective piece from yesterday.

It's taken the media 18 months to call lies lies. There was always the big risk the media would normalise this and they are doing. Trump's not stupid when he says the media need him. This circus keeps their circulation and audience levels.
