to wonder why people buy expensive toilet paper?

Confused

Shops have almost a whole aisle dedicated to the toilet paper. We always buy the cheapest ones we can find (usually own brand), and I can't understand why people spend so much money on branded loo roll. You're literally only using it to wipe yourself and throw down the toilet.

Am I missing something here?

“I'm still bewildered who buys the coconut flavour loo roll”

i do! it’s not flavour because i’m not eating it.. but the reason i get it is because it is slightly scented and makes my bathroom smell nice.

li1972 · 15/07/2018 12:49

Izal : Also known as John Wayne toilet paper... on account of it being 'rough, tough and takes no shit from anyone!'
🤣

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/07/2018 12:51

The way to use the shiny paper was to scrunch it up really well first, and then smooth it out and wipe.

soulrider · 15/07/2018 12:53

Those saying it's false economy to buy cheap toilet paper because you use twice as much. That's only true if the cheap stuff is more than half the price of the expensive stuff.

If it's 8p per 100 sheets for cheap toilet roll versus 25p per 100 sheets for expensive stuff it's still more economical to buy the cheap stuff even if you use three times as much!

LakieLady · 15/07/2018 12:53

This thread is timely. I just realised that we got through 16 rolls of cheap stuff in less time than 9 rolls of supermarket better quality stuff (neither of us have had the squits or anything). Definitely a false economy imo.

I've also been noticing that the bathroom is getting incredibly dusty, but put it down to the hot weather and having the windows open most of the time. It never occurred to me that it might be the cheap bog roll making it dusty in there.

essietopcoat · 15/07/2018 12:54

We were an Izal household for a fare chunk of my childhood. Allegedly for plumbing reasons.

I'm Cushelle all the way now - I've done my penance.

TwoBlueShoes · 15/07/2018 13:00

I just bulk buy the Costco toilet paper.

Does anyone remember using tracing paper in schools as a kid? It absorbed absolutely nothing. Grin

Jux · 15/07/2018 13:04

Izal - aaaargh! Had it at home when I was tiny and had it at school until I went to Secondary.

Not all cheap bogrolls are strong enough. We (dh, dd and I) have found they can disintegrate at the worst moments Grin. So we use Velvet, which doesn't. It's getting harder and harder to find.

Topseyt · 15/07/2018 13:09

I remember that horrid grease proof paper stuff in public toilets and school toilets. Dreadful, scratchy stuff that more sandpapered your arse than wiped it.

I have had IBS for much of my adult life. I buy supermarket home brand toilet paper, but not their really crap value ranges. Home brand is comfortable enough, lasts for a good while here and I just refuse to spend more on something I am only planning to shove up my arse and flush down the toilet.

I would never buy quilted. On the odd occasion I have used it in other people's houses I have noticed that it doesn't flush away properly, always leaving some behind floating. Therefore it must be a greater drain blockage risk.

Horridhenry88 · 15/07/2018 13:15

I like the quilted stuff but will rethink based on plumbing issues. I never but the cheap stuff but buy whichever better quality one is on offer.

KarlDilkington · 15/07/2018 13:24

Does anyone else have a problem with some toilet rolls leaving behind paper crumbs in your bits and pubes?! I'm sorry for TMI, but I hate this and that's why I tend to stick to the posher stuff as it doesn't tend to happen.

anametouse · 15/07/2018 13:25

@FearOfFrogs that's for that link, I'll be using them too now Smile

Hangingaroundtheportal · 15/07/2018 13:33

I buy Nicky from Home Bargains because its so damn cheap. Or Tesco own brand. Have never thought that more expensive bog roll might be softer, but I'm on medication at the moment which is making my undercarriage sore and giving me piles, so might use it as an excuse to splash out!

When I was at uni for the second and third year we didn't spend a single penny on loo roll. A girl I lived with used to nick those huge industrial rolls from her gym, so every term she would rock up with a bin bag full of toilet roll!

PixelDust · 15/07/2018 13:37

Alway buy plan Andrex. Cheap loo paper is a waste of money.

megletthesecond · 15/07/2018 13:38

Yanbu.
The fancy stuff doesn't flush as well either.
I have IBS and spend a lot of time on the loo. I certainly couldn't afford anything other than basics toilet paper.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/07/2018 13:57

My grandmother used to have Izal. I used to rob it to do tracings with. My mum would always take a roll or 2 of Andrex with us when we went to stay with them though! Grin

My mum was a big fan of Andrex. My Dad buys it still, I think, although I haven't really checked.

I buy whatever is 100% recycled paper. DH doesn't - but he only buys bog roll when I'm away for any length of time, so he has to put up with the recycled stuff. When I get back though, there's usually triple quilted softy softy stuff.

Tissues though - I buy Kleenex with aloe vera/balm. I've tried cheaper versions and they're just not as good, and I have a runny nose a lot of the time, so I need the softy softy with balm to stop my nose from being buggered up.

Spongeface · 15/07/2018 13:58

Thanks @fearoffrogs that's me ordered up too. Never heard of who gives a crap! Looks lovely company.

bilbodog · 15/07/2018 13:59

I hadnt heard of ‘who guves a crap’ before but will be buying from them from now on - thank you guys.

FlorencesHunger · 15/07/2018 14:21

I buy lidl middle range 3ply it lasts much longer than the cheaper ones tried 4ply which was lovely but with a dc who uses excessive amounts it bogged up my toilet so 3ply it is.

I don't care for Andrex and the like as I do think it's expensive just to wipe your arse but I still don't want paper that falls to bits.

MandalaYogaTapestry · 15/07/2018 14:44

Completely missing the point - but I checked out the Who Gives a Crap website and their team lists lots of men on executive professional positions and all women bar one are "Customer Happiness" which I guess means that they are with customer services.

Kind of instantly disliked the company for that reason.

PeckhamPauline · 15/07/2018 14:45

mini shower heads next to the toilet to wash your bum,

I want to know more about this. Doesn't the water go everywhere?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 15/07/2018 14:48

Do they still sell the stuff that was like small sheets of tracing paper? I remember it from school (and the weird pinky purple sheets like blotting paper) that were both very uncomfortable on your bum.

SimonBridges · 15/07/2018 14:57

We were an Izal household for a fare chunk of my childhood.
Have you had therapy for that? What were your parents thinking? I can’t imagine a grown adult wanting to buy it.
It was bad enough as a child but I can’t imagine using it to clean up during my period.

steff13 · 15/07/2018 15:33

No, it's a little hand-held shower head, and you just sort of put it between your legs and angle it where you need it. All the water stays in the bowl. I don't have hemorrhoids, but I image it would be really soothing for those. It's also nice for cleaning during your period. It's connected to the toilet's main water supply, so it's clean water.

Wellthisunexpected · 15/07/2018 15:37

We use cheap- midrange. My mum buys the really cheap stuff and we just use two e asuch otherwise it breaks.
