to wonder why people buy expensive toilet paper?

Confused

Shops have almost a whole aisle dedicated to the toilet paper. We always buy the cheapest ones we can find (usually own brand), and I can't understand why people spend so much money on branded loo roll. You're literally only using it to wipe yourself and throw down the toilet.

Am I missing something here?

The Shea butter one does not agree with me at all. Fanjo fire.

Whyiseveryonesoangry · 15/07/2018 11:28

I find that the thicker high price toilet paper doesn’t always flush away first time. Especially when using the short flush option. Anyone else noticed this?

Xenia · 15/07/2018 11:30

I like quite Andrex. I have not looked at the price for about 20 years which illustrates I am fairly well off I suppose. Sometrimes comparing prices takes so long I would have earned more at £360 per hour had I spent the time working actually. Price comparison time becomes interesting when women earn a fair bit.

We buy Who Gives a Crap brand toilet paper. Because I appreciate their values and the philosophy behind their business model.

I will pay more for a products from a company which practices ethical behaviour.

OftenHangry · 15/07/2018 11:34

Because it makes you feel clean like a man called David.
😁
DH brought home the cheap own brand last time... Niw we have each own toilet paper, because there is now way in hell I can use the cheap one more than 1 day. Peculiar digestive system, so will happily splash out on soft as clouds tp

AirForce0ne · 15/07/2018 11:36

I tried the cheapest versions and we end up using twice as much, so it's really not a great economy. I am guessing people buy what they find the most comfortable and practical, and there are a very few show off who need "posh" toilet rolls to match their Diptyque diffusers and Molton Brown hand soap.

OftenHangry · 15/07/2018 11:38

Oh my god! I may give whogivesacrap try just because of this 😂

My loo roll is my every day luxury. I buy andrex but it's always on offer somewhere.

Atthebottomofthesea · 15/07/2018 11:39

We use Nicky. Very cheap paper is often smaller and thinner so you use more. We do have Andrex next as dh couldn't get Nicky.

FIL used to have that waxy paper stuff. I am proud to say I converted mil to proper roll. I used to take some in my bag to use there.

Deux · 15/07/2018 11:41

My neighbours managed to block their drain with fancy quilted toilet paper. Dynorod found a lump of it around the rim of the drain.

The cheap stuff breaks down quickly so doesn’t cause the same problems. The way to test is to wet it and see what happens. If it stays together and doesn’t breakdown then it’s a drain problem in the making.

Household Things I don’t scrimp on
Good quality Toilet paper
Good detergents & washing up liquid
It’s a personal preference

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 15/07/2018 11:42

I have tried the cheapest and have found they are so thin that I used more and also produced so much dust. Now I buy re-cycled which costs a little more but lasts longer than the cheapest. I don't buy scented or moisturised as that is just more gunk going into the water system. I have also noticed that thicker paper is harder to flush so another reason not buy as you are flushing more & wasting water.

Oldraver · 15/07/2018 11:42

I wont buy branded if it's not on offer but when it is, it's the same price as supermarket.

Dont like the quilted stuff though

WigglyBlossom · 15/07/2018 11:42

Because I can.

DH and I have IBS which for us means having a poo 4 to 5 times a morning. Each. Every morning. If I get cheap toilet roll, I get sore.

I buy Andrex when on offer, in bulk to save money

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/07/2018 11:42

Because people think cheap loo roll is rubbish and there probably is an element of truth in that. It might be one of those things where it is worth paying a bit more, but it's just a case of trying a few and seeing what suits you. Preferably while trying to decide objectively, not 'this is Andrex so it must be good'.

I'm more confused about those who buy expensive cat litter. I know some of the more expensive brands last longer or whatever, but I can't see some of them lasting long enough to make it worth paying the extra for something for the cats to shit on. I get the Aldi clumping and it seems to be the best combination of cheap and decent (I like a clumping litter so I can scoop out the clumps leaving relatively clean litter behind).

Some cheap things are actually the best available - suncream is a classic illustration - basic supermarket brands reliably perform better in tests than big brands at two or three times the price.

It's worth watching a few episodes of Eat Well for Less and Shop Well for Less to see how people respond when they use products without knowing what the brand is - in 80/90% of cases, they are perfectly happy with the cheaper brand, even if they stated at the begininng that 'it had to be Heinz, Clinique, Champagne' etc and everything else was cheap rubbish that they would spot a mile off. People can almost never spot 'their' brand without the packaging and often prefer the cheaper one.

katseyes7 · 15/07/2018 11:43

l buy Asda Shades in packs of 24. £8, good quality, and it lasts me ages. l have three toilets so l can stock each one up!

Whitney168 · 15/07/2018 11:44

After years perfectly happily using supermarket own brand, I have just gone back to Andrex - do supermarkets think we don't notice the inner roll is getting bigger and it's wound more loosely? Who has the time to change loo rolls constantly?

Terriblydifficult · 15/07/2018 11:46

I was buying Andrex quilted: blocked my toilet. Have gone back to the supermarket own.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/07/2018 11:48

Who has the time to change loo rolls constantly?
Wasn’t aware it was onerous or time consuming task frankly

Yogagirl123 · 15/07/2018 11:48

I am prepared to be flamed here 😂 I buy the best, super doopah toilet rolls for my en-suite.

The teens bathroom has a supermarket brand, as they use an unbelievable amount of it.

Downstairs loo also has a cheapy one!

It’s a little bit of luxury for me and no one has noticed, so no harm done!

OftenHangry · 15/07/2018 11:49

@LipstickHandbagCoffee exactly the same here

DuckingMel · 15/07/2018 11:49

Where I come from, usual toilet paper is slightly rougher and tougher and recycled. Was a bit surprised it wasn't the norm here. Now buy the closest stuff, which is own brand. The recycled stuff here either looks a bit feeble, or too "dirty", or is too expensive. Quilted toilet roll is ridiculous. But I suppose it comes down to what you're used to and I have IBS too, but my bum, or flaps - god forbid, have never been that sore. Everso slightly rougher paper just cleans better. Also, recycling should be standard! Why manufacture toilet roll from pristine wood????

CocoaGin70 · 15/07/2018 11:49

We use Waitrose own as you get 16 rolls for about a fiver and it's really nice. I find I get sore from cheap loo roll, and you seem to use an awful lot more of it. It's a false economy buying cheap.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 15/07/2018 11:50

Completely agree YogaGirl. I want to wipe my bahookie with the brand leader, hang the expense

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/07/2018 11:50

It's also worth keeping an eye on the number of sheets you get per roll, because they can vary a fair bit. So the pack of 9 might sometimes have more sheets than a pack of 12 in another brand.

We usually stock up when there's a good offer in Costco and keep the big packs under the bed.
