AIBU?
I think she looked absolutely ridiculous in that red dress when she greeted Trump at Blenheim palace.

She looked out of place and was perhaps trying to compete with melania trump...obviously a formal event but that dress was a bad choice and didn't suit her AT ALL.
The slit....🙈

Er, she looked FANTASTIC. What planet are you on?!

coolncalm · 13/07/2018 09:24

How lovely would it be for women to be judged on their abilities, intelligence, skills and personality more so than how they look.
That will only happen when women (not all) in the public eye stop putting such huge emphasis on how they look. The amount of women on here who bleat on about how beautiful Kate or Meghan is kind of proves a point.

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 13/07/2018 09:27

Ummm, she looked very elegant and appropriately dressed for the occasion. And this is coming from a staunch left winger.

longwayoff · 13/07/2018 09:29

Melania an accessory? Surely she's his KGB minder?

bigsighall · 13/07/2018 09:29

Nasty thread.
When will women stop putting other women down. I would says she’s reasonably successful what with running the country and all that and all you can do is comment on her dress????
Good god it’s just so depressing.

littlecabbage · 13/07/2018 09:31

I wish women would stop criticising the appearance of other women in the public eye, who are in the public eye not due to their looks, but because they have a responsible job.

Sure, the Kardashians etc are mainly famous because of their appearance. But Theresa May is busy being Prime Minister and her dress sense is irrelevant. You wouldn't criticise a male PM in this way.

HRHCatherinePrincessofWales · 13/07/2018 09:32

I LOVE the idea of Melania as undercover KGB! The first sign of trouble, off comes the pastel yellow cape and out come the nunchucks.

I loved Theresa May's dress. I actually find Theresa May pretty repellent as a person because, well, she's the leader of the Tories. But I thought that dress was fab.

ARoomSomewhere · 13/07/2018 09:32

I am not a fan of TM personally.

However, she was appropriately dressed for a corporate event.

I thought the red colour, picking up the guards uniforms as it did, was rather clever in presenting a united front of Britishness.

tictoc76 · 13/07/2018 09:33

I’m a Tory supporter - her dress was awful! Well actually it wasn’t the whole dress but the fact that the slit at the back practically went up to her bum!

HRHCatherinePrincessofWales · 13/07/2018 09:35

I thought Philip May looked a bit jowly.

He needs to work on his posture too.

Seasawride · 13/07/2018 09:35

Mumsnet at its best op.

Take note we don’t like bitching about other women’s clothes or appearance.

HRHCatherinePrincessofWales · 13/07/2018 09:36

Yes, I was a bit Shock when I saw how high it went up!

Lycanthropology · 13/07/2018 09:37

a woman PM is always going to get more attention for what she wears than a man does, and we're all guilty of that, stop pretending otherwise, it's tiresome

Speak for yourself. I never gave a toss what Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel wore, or anyone else in the public eye, and never discussed it with anyone else. I frankly didn't notice or care.
It's only hypocrisy if the same person/people have double standards.

FWIW I don't recall much criticism of Margaret Thatcher's wardrobe, but I do recall criticism of the sometime Labour Leader Michael Foot's dress style in the same era.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/07/2018 09:39

Wonder if she'll speak out against this?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/07/2018 09:39

I think TM dresses very well given her age

She's actually a tad younger than me I think. Do you think we all dress in floral pinafore dresses or crimplene? 90% of my friends dress as well as her, if not better.

And no, it's not the dress, although I don't like the slit. It's her.

ARoomSomewhere · 13/07/2018 09:39

What i noticed most was how uncomfortable and beholden she looked as PM, esp the long wait for Trumps car to arrive.

What i noticed most was not Melanias dress but how studiously she ignored DT when he tried to interact with her (amusing)

What I CARE about most is the headlines this am from his damaging comments and if we end up out of the EU with no trade deal with US

AlisonCHaynes · 13/07/2018 09:46

Just jumping in to say Donald Trump is fat and has stupid hair.

Bluntness100 · 13/07/2018 09:46

Well yes op, you're quite right, it's really important the British prime minister dresses in a way you approve of. You're not shallow or vacuous at all. Nope. It's all about how she looks.

Cos she's a woman, right? That's what she's there for. To look decorative and gain approval for her appearance.

Best email Westminster and tell em. Doesn't she know as a woman that's her primary responsibility? Maybe you can request approval of her wardrobe in future? You being the fashion guru and all.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 13/07/2018 09:46

She looked fine. The red was perfect for her skin tone. The split was really high but maybe she wanted to moon at Trump and why not?

Trump's 'style' however - ERROR! Duke of Weselton wig, badly fitted suit, general air of shoddiness. I'd like to see him pulled apart in the fashion pages.

Neolara · 13/07/2018 09:46

Bloody hell. Give the woman a break. She has to spend three days being polite to the Obnoxious Orange One - from my perspective, she gets a medal just for turning up. After OOO's interview today, I'm sure her preferred option would be to flush his head down the loo.

coolncalm · 13/07/2018 09:47

I never said i cared either, i said women in the public eye will always get more attention for their clothes, to deny that is childish and a tad hypocritical.

StealthPolarBear · 13/07/2018 09:48

Actually if its so she could moon (or even just fantasise about it) the dress was perfect.
Was there any accidental writing on the back of melania dress?

Talith · 13/07/2018 09:49

YABU. I've a quiet admiration for her actually. Don't agree with the conservative line on anything much, but as an individual she was game enough to grip the poisoned brexit chalice, and hasn't thrown in the towel on it (yet). Its such a disaster I honestly don't think anyone could effect a smooth transition whilst maintaining party cohesion. And anyway, who cares what she looks like in a dress? I thought it was a nice dress for what it's worth. She's been a bit busy trying to herd the cats in the Tory party so probably not had time to hit the gym and get on a sunbed. I bet The Don looks a bit flabby and pale under his suit.

Shumpalumpa · 13/07/2018 09:51

While there are people like you who will fall over themselves in their ‘right to comment’ on women’s looks before all else, misogyny will continue to prosper.

👏👏👏
