AIBU?
I think she looked absolutely ridiculous in that red dress when she greeted Trump at Blenheim palace.

She looked out of place and was perhaps trying to compete with melania trump...obviously a formal event but that dress was a bad choice and didn't suit her AT ALL.
The slit....🙈

Where is the op anyway??

Nikephorus · 13/07/2018 08:59

I thought she looked fab. I bet the OP doesn't look half as good.

longwayoff · 13/07/2018 09:01

So OP or Boris as your friends call you. When you getting a haircut?

coolncalm · 13/07/2018 09:01

Here we go again with the usual mumsnet hypocrisy.... Why the outrage (because its misogyny, sexism etc), because it's a criticism of what a woman is wearing, when it's perfectly acceptable to admire, gush, drool etc about clothes that women in the public eye wear normally.

A perfect example is when Princess Diana was alive, every single thing she wore, every hair style, magazines devoted to her etc etc Who was caring what Charles wore?, where was the outrage about that....... Why was it such a big deal what she wore, but no indignance that Charles clothes weren't getting scrutinised. We all know the answer to that, no one cared, because one suit looks pretty much like another, but mainly because Diana enjoyed the reaction to what she was wearing, people were OBSESSING over her clothes. That is the world we live in now, it's all about image.

So if we're all going to drone on about how wonderful so and so looked and what a gorgeous outfit Meghan wore yesterday or how beautiful Kate looked etc, why the shock horror when someone says they hated a dress the PM wore. It works both ways ffs, fifty years ago no one would have cared or known what a PM wore, but we live in a different world now, and a woman PM is always going to get more attention for what she wears than a man does, and we're all guilty of that, stop pretending otherwise, it's tiresome.

LittleLionMansMummy · 13/07/2018 09:02

I believe the Metro (of all unusual sources) nailed this debate with a tongue in cheek clothing review upon her taking up residence in Downing Street. They reviewed her husband's clothes. Of course dressing the part is important, but this is nothing like turning up in trackies and t-shirt. She dresses as a politician in the public eye - whether it suits her or whether we like it is neither here nor there. When I see her on tv I think "For fuck's sake, why are you entertaining that wankpuffin beside you and all that he represents?" not "Oh, I really think you should have avoided wearing those patterned kittens heels with that dress!"

PaintedHorizons · 13/07/2018 09:03

OP - that is bitchy, sexist, nasty crap.

Good women are prevented from getting into the positions of power that they should do because, from teenage years on they are routinely humiliated by other women by commenting on their appearance.

The shame of standing up in front of an audience feeling , unattractive and poorly dressed, (while standing next to a supermodel specimen), will lead many a woman to hesitate and say "No - you kick things off, I'll do the background stuff" to her male colleague.

Horrible

AveAtqueVale · 13/07/2018 09:06

Oh ffs. Another day, another thread about what a woman looks like and chooses to wear. I haven’t got much time for TM or her politics but she is (for her sins) the Prime Minister, not a bloody mannequin, and her clothing choices should be given exactly the same scrutiny as those of a man in her position would be - ie virtually none.

pennycarbonara · 13/07/2018 09:07

Like some others I think her wardrobe is generally excellent. And although I've never voted Tory in my life I think quite a lot of the criticism of her is essentially circumstantial and that she is doing an impossible job which a great many people would have wanted to run away from, or been forced out of by now if they had equivocated less. (Once she's gone and she eventually writes a memoir it'll be fascinating to hear how she deals with the stress.)

I have always been very disappointed in her holding hands with Trump though. I get why she would do it, it's a kind of appeasement, humouring him, and she probably feels that she needs to, because she doesn't have the sort of sense of humour he'd like or some other way of 'compensating' for being a woman leader in his eyes. But it looks weak: if she can't even say that's inappropriate...
And this morning's press, with him trashing her anyway, shows it was a pretty pointless exercise.

PaintedHorizons · 13/07/2018 09:08

Not hypocrisy. If I sing Happy Birthday to my child I don't expect to be ripped apart for my singing. If I am on stage at Covent Garden - it would be justified.

The others you mention make a career of how they look, (Kate less so than Meghan or Diana).

TM has a job to do - she is not claiming to be a fashion leader and does not accept freebies from fashion houses or write blogs about what she wears, (I don't think! Grin )

SixSquared · 13/07/2018 09:09

What a horrible thread

Genevieva · 13/07/2018 09:09

Theresa May's dress is actually made of a very high quality silk. Look at the way it catches the evening light. It is a black tie event, so needed to be long. It is straight and May is has no frills sort of personality. The slit at the back is classic for dresses of its kind. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to walk up the steps. The dress and shoes match perfectly. The colour means she stands out, but it is not a brash red. Red is also a suitable choice because it is part of the Union flag and is not part of the EU flag. I reckon whoever was charged with sorting out her outfit put in a lot of thought and got it right.

Melania is known for dressing to convey a message. She looks like Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Take from that what you will.

My sartorial comments convey of my political views on the mess we are currently in.

PinkCrystal · 13/07/2018 09:09

I am not a fan of her at all but think she looked fine. She can look quite glam. Love that she has her Gray hair too. We shouldn't be judging on looks any how (people have commented she looks unwell etc). She looked far from ridiculous.

Seasawride · 13/07/2018 09:10

I thought she looked fine and to be honest I feel utterly sympathetic to her surrounded by all these treacherous mysogynistic bullying weak men.

And then there’s trump! Poor cow

Quietrebel · 13/07/2018 09:10

She wasn't there to 'compete' with Melania! She was there as leader of HMG and host to a key ally! The country is about to fall off a cliff and a dress is all you see? Who gives a fuck about her dress! I want to know who will be trading with the UK and on what terms. Am I going to have a job next year? Am I going to have to eat hormone filled beef & cheap industrial junk food (any food??) ? Am I going to have to choose y some point between my house and paying a hospital bill because the nhs will have been dismantled and sold off to big US pharma? These are things I care about, not whether the pm has a crap figure or bad sense of style ffs!!!

Genevieva · 13/07/2018 09:11

that should say convey nothing. This machine keeps playing up.

Laiste · 13/07/2018 09:11

While women wear a colourful assortment of clothes while at their work place (unlike the unremarkable uniform of a suit which men wear) they will continue to attract comment and opinion which will detracts from their actual role.

KittyB52 · 13/07/2018 09:13

I thought TM’s outfit looked nice.

Accessorising with Woody Allen, the evil queen from Snow White and a 1970’s dog turd did her no favours though.

Laiste · 13/07/2018 09:13

Malania is an accessory. Fluncy flouncy.

TM was technically at work. I would have preferred it if she had worn a plain work suit.

Emma198 · 13/07/2018 09:14

How lovely would it be for women to be judged on their abilities, intelligence, skills and personality more so than how they look.

spiderplantsgalore · 13/07/2018 09:14

I noticed TM's dress only because I thought it was lovely, very plain and elegant and a nice colour.
She's the Prime MInister and all that should be expected is for her to look okay.
I wonder if Angela Merkel is subjected to these kind of comments in Germany. Or do they accept that she is a person doing a hugely demanding and time-consuming job and leave her appearance alone?

BawbagWilbury · 13/07/2018 09:14

So this thread is ok:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/3304734-Politics-entirely-aside-Theresa-May-looks-fucking-fabulous?pg=3

But this one is 'bitchy' and 'horrible' ?!!

Badtasteflump · 13/07/2018 09:15

YABU.

Nasty, nasty thread you started here OP

SixSquared · 13/07/2018 09:15

I thought she looked glamorous but in an appropriate way

catinboots9 · 13/07/2018 09:18

Should have posted in S&B OP.

It's not permitted to discuss fashion on AIBU Wink

coolncalm · 13/07/2018 09:19

Paintedhorizons I agree, it totally shouldn't be relevant on what she wears, and yes some people do make a career over what they wear,, Kate, Meghan etc, but i've noticed with them that the same things get said....everything's fine if it's complimentary, but if what they wear gets slated, all of a sudden it's "tearing a woman down for her clothes" etc. It's the huge double standards and the irony of it all that gets me.
