To want lots of layers in my hair?

My past 2 trips to the hairdresser (different places) haven't been very successful. I've tried to explain that I want lots of layers cut into my hair so it looks less like a rectangle, but they seem incredibly reluctant to add in any more layers than the bare minimum as "it wouldn't look right" on my fairly long hair. I'm £60 down and my hair still looks like a rectangle with no movement and no layers. Is the layered look unfashionable or something at the moment?

I don’t really know by what you mean by ‘looks like a rectangle’. How long is fairly long? Why do you feel layers will give it ‘movement’?

Aquamarine1029 · 12/07/2018 22:34

Have you brought them a picture of someone's hair to give them a visual as to what you want?

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/07/2018 22:34

Sod fashion, if I don’t have a lot of layers in my very long very thick hair it looks like a poofy triangle.

I had mine done last week after neglecting it for 6 months and I’m thrilled with it. Long lovely layers, it’s lost half the volume so it’s hanging nicely, needs far less product, dries quicker, can still put it up however I want to.

It was a new place and the difference was he had a really good look at it dry before doing anything to it, asked how I dry and style and wear it. And the result was great. It’s miles from where I live but I’ll trek back there in a couple of months!

I don't really know how to describe it! It all just sorts of hangs in one giant blob at one length. I want it to look sort of 'flicky' when I straighten it, if you see what I mean. It's about bra strap length, maybe an inch or so shorter.

As far as I know the fashion at the moment goes towards subtle layers in the ends of the hair to give movement while retaining quite a thick, square shape to the perimeter of the haircut.

Sort of like this or this or this .

caddywally · 12/07/2018 22:38

Aquamarine I haven't, but I think that'll have to be the next step! I've always felt a bit rushed when they ask what I want and there doesn't seem to be a good time to get a photo out.

AnneLovesGilbert That's what I want! My hair currently takes so long to dry that it usually ends up just getting tied up still half-damp, and if I do take the time to dry it it just looks flat and lank, anyway.

LockedOutOfMN Maybe that's what they think I want. It looks very nice on those ladies, but really doesn't work with my hair at all. The one-length looks makes my face look like a ball, too.

I think you need to ask for a disconnected layer for volume and to have it cut with a razor. Mine is naturally wavy and I like it to look sort of shaggy. Might be worth discussing over the phone to find out if the stylist knows how to do it.

A hairdresser might be along in a minute to elaborate!

LockedOutOfMN · 12/07/2018 22:43

That said, if you want layers, they should give you layers.

Have you had lots of layers before, OP?

caddywally · 12/07/2018 22:46

Mybabystolemysanity Maybe I'm just not describing what I want properly. I don't know what a lot of this stuff means!

LockedOutOfMN I have, but about 10 years ago. Since then I've been cycling between bobs and slightly longer hair and eventually decided to grow it to this length. My hair doesn't need layers when it's shorter so it wasn't really layered for a long time.

Can you post a pic of the kind of style you mean? It might be there’s another way of explaining it?

TiltedTowers · 12/07/2018 22:53

I sympathise. My very very thick hair is like a triangle.

I want an undercut and I do NOT understand why no hair dresser will give it to me.

Hairdressers sometimes act like it'd be breaking the laws of physics

BigPinkBall · 12/07/2018 22:56

I’ve got crazy thick hair and I have to wear it long or it just frizzes out and looks huge, I took a picture of Sofia Vergara into the hairdressers and got a good cut!

FranticallyPeaceful · 12/07/2018 22:56

If your hair is long then too many layers would look ridiculous because the bottom layer would be long and really thin

caddywally · 12/07/2018 22:56

TiltedTowers It's frustrating, isn't it? I get that they're trying to do what they think is best, but sometimes I just want them to do what I want and if it ends up looking as awful as they think it will I'll live with the consequences.

FranticallyPeaceful · 12/07/2018 22:57

They’re deep layers I think, not so much loads of layers. Maybe you’re asking for the wrong thing?

LockedOutOfMN · 12/07/2018 22:57

Like this, OP?

Souledout · 12/07/2018 22:58

I always want a long choppy bob. No-one else does!

NC4Now · 12/07/2018 22:58

That’s lovely. The second one is very similar to mine before I made the stupid —breakup— decision to get a long bob.

Show them the pics next time maybe?

caddywally · 12/07/2018 22:59

FranticallyPeaceful What do you mean by deep layers?

LockedOutOfMN Hard to tell because her hair looks like it's been curled a little bit. Something like that, though.

Foggymist · 12/07/2018 22:59

The second photo is basically what my hair looks like. I always say I want lots of layers to take some of the weight out of it and give it volume, and my last two hairdressers have asked did I want the back cut straight across with no layers or layered, so it's very clear for both of us what's happening.

Cheerbear23 · 12/07/2018 22:59

I asked for lots of long layers and got a Janis Joplin 70’s long mullett .... I was very upset. Be careful what you ask for!!

WorryFace · 12/07/2018 22:59

Do you mean these ?

It’s called a shag - google more images
