To want lots of layers in my hair?

My past 2 trips to the hairdresser (different places) haven't been very successful. I've tried to explain that I want lots of layers cut into my hair so it looks less like a rectangle, but they seem incredibly reluctant to add in any more layers than the bare minimum as "it wouldn't look right" on my fairly long hair. I'm £60 down and my hair still looks like a rectangle with no movement and no layers. Is the layered look unfashionable or something at the moment?

NC4Now What did you ask for to get your hair like that (if you can remember)? I'm considering chopping mine off because I'm getting frustrated with it as it is, but I'm going to give it another go and hopefully I can sort it.

See I’m the other way, every time I go to the hairdressers they cut bloody layers into my hair that I specifically told them I don’t want and every bastard time my hair ends up virtually sticking out sideways because of them. There’s a reason my hair is long, without the weight holding it down, it goes OUT. Will they listen? 🙄

BigPinkBall · 12/07/2018 23:02

@LockedOutOfMN her hair always looks amazing though, I just wish I had the body to match!

SaucyJack · 12/07/2018 23:03

Like this sort of thing?

Cheerbear23 I was worried something like that would happen to me but it seems to have gone the other way completely.

WorryFace Something with longer layers than that as I think really short layers would look a bit odd with my hair length.

hello op I'm a hairstylist!

I would 100% take in pictures of hair that you like AND ones that you don't like!

one of the biggest problems between a stylist and client is communication and what you think you're describing to a stylist could mean something entirely different to them - which is why it's important to take in pics you don't like.

any stylist worth their salt, absolutely would not mind if you went back to them and explained you were unhappy. I can assure you they would prefer it! I know not everyone is comfortable complaining so if you really feel like you can't go back and want to try a new salon ask them if you can pop in for a chat with someone. have a consultation with them, tell them whats happend. tell them how you manage your hair, your life style, products you use...then decide if you'd like to make an appointment with them.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 12/07/2018 23:06

OP I am exactly the same. I have long thick wavy hair and the last few cuts have basically just taken length off and nothing else! I don’t want length off! I need weight off! I like your second photo. I’m going to take that with me next time I go in.

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:06

PickledLilly I wish my hair went out more than it does! If you give me some of your poofiness I'll give you some of my heaviness.

SaucyJack Kind of like that, but with shorter layers so it frames my face a bit more when I bring it round to the front.

roseyposeyshmosey I think it probably is a communication issue. Both of the hairdressers have been lovely and if I could get them to understand what I wanted, I'd be back in a heartbeat. Maybe a photo will explain what I can't!

My DD has her hair like the links you posted. Her hair is very thick and she just has long layers but not 'many' layers IYNWIM

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:13

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale I got it thinned out a little bit last time which helped a teeny bit on the volume front, but it still looks a bit flat for my liking. At least if I have layers I can work some magic with straighteners and make it look as though it isn't quite so flat.

roseyposeyshmosey · 12/07/2018 23:13

just noticed the pics that have been posted.

ask for "over directed" layers because you like to wear your hair full and bouncy"
also ask for some shaping through the front.

don't forget to take pics!

MikeUniformMike · 12/07/2018 23:13

I would ask for choppy layers so that the hair would have more movement and so that some of the weight was taken out of it. Take in the photos you showed us.

I don't think that straighteners are what you should use. I think you should let a bit of wave in your hair.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/07/2018 23:14

I have this issue with hairdressers

Lots and lots of fine hair that needs lots of layers or I have the Dougal from Magic Roundabout look

I do it myself (watched Lee Staford video on you tube) and go once or twice a year to gets ends trimmed

I always get told I need long layers I don’t I know my own hair Hmm

Luckily as I have lots of hair if I make a mistake it doesn’t show too much

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:14

expatmigrant I was emphasising the 'many' layers as I was worried that otherwise I'd get some layers about an inch from the ends and nothing else! I want something that is noticeable from the front as well as the back, if you see what I mean. At the moment the back looks fine but the front just looks a bit meh.

OP posts:
caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:18

roseyposeyshmosey What do you mean by overdirected?

MikeUniformMike I use straighteners to give it a bit of a wave. Might sound a bit odd, but my hair is quite straight naturally so if I sort of flick out the ends with straighteners it separates the layers a bit more and they're more noticeable. Not sure how to explain it! If I leave it natural the layers I do have blend into one.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed I wish I could do it myself but after a few disasters I'm steering clear of the scissors at home, though I do get tempted ...

HMC2000 · 12/07/2018 23:19

I could have written your post. My hairdresser always says that it doesn't look right if layers start too high up, but I've got long thick wavy hair, and I want tousled shaggy hair with graduated layers, not a long triangle with a few layers in the last inch or so. My hairdresser has just retired, so I'm taking a photo with me to the new one!

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:22

HMC2000 I keep getting layers in only the last inch or so, too! Good luck with your new hairdresser!

OP posts:
roseyposeyshmosey · 12/07/2018 23:24

over directed layers maintain length but gives the hair the kind of layers that are in the pics.

it's one of those things you'll just have to trust me on Grin

steff13 · 12/07/2018 23:24

This is my hair. I ask for long layers. It's curled here, so you can't see them that well, but you can kind of see. If I don't get layers, my hair looks like a frizzy pyramid.

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:26

roseyposeyshmosey Thanks! I'm just worried the hairdresser will ask me to explain myself and I won't have a clue what I've just said Grin

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 12/07/2018 23:26

Oh your hair is straight

Mine is wavy so a few uneven layers doesn’t get noticed

I want layers from under my ears my hair is just past my shoulders that’s what looks best it hangs nicely then but haven’t been able to get a hairdresser to cut it like this for years. One who did moved he would tip my head forward and cut layers at the back of my hair working to the front he is the only hairdresser I’ve known to cut my hair like this

caddywally · 12/07/2018 23:27

steff13 Your hair is so nice and glossy! It looks full in the midlengths which is what I want.

OP posts:
llangennith · 12/07/2018 23:29

You may need to grow it a few inches then get layers cut into it to get the look you want.

LoveAtFirstSight · 12/07/2018 23:32

I have similar length hair and recently had a bit of a breakthrough about getting the shape i was wanting. Its not so much about the layers, its about not cutting the bottom straight.

I took this picture into the hairdressers, and it gives exavtly the right about of shape, with some subtle layers as well
