I don't like him or agree with his policies, but what good is it going to do walking around with a giant helium balloon of a baby?

Loads of horrible world leaders from the middle East that are doing far far woorse and they get a royal visit over here with no one batting an eyelid. Just smacks of double standards to me.

The behaviour of the Turkish president is actually much more shocking

No, he's just further down the line. Give it time.

OrangeGoblinHunter · 12/07/2018 19:58

no I can’t say I understand your point, can you clarify?

You say your reason for objecting to the protests is that we should respect everyone’s point of view.. does that mean we shouldn’t protest in case we upset someone? Have I missed something here?

The demonstrations are partly happening in order to demonstrate to the American people that we strongly object to the person they elected, it’s their choice whether or not that impacts them.

Your argument is fundementalky flawed, it’s the equivalent of saying ‘in a meeting of 10 people, they elect a leader to chair the meeting but I know that his decision making ability, his moral compass and his motivation is flawed. I am not in that meeting but the results of it deeply impact my future. I cannot speak up lest I offend the people attending, so I keep my concerns to myself’

Vs:

‘I know the individual chairing the meeting will make poor decisions that will directly impact me. I voice my concerns, it remains the decision of the meeting attendees to decide if her should be the leader or not’

You see the difference right?

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 20:09

OrangeGoblinHunter Yes I understand what your saying. I’m not against the protests. I just find them irritating.

CambridgeAnaglypta · 12/07/2018 20:13

Well, Blenheim Palace looked fantastic this evening.

lljkk · 12/07/2018 20:28

As American living in UK I love the protests & will join one tomorrow. #NotMyPresident

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 20:29

lljkk No he’s not your president, seen as you live in UK 😂

rosamundhopelovesdogs123 · 12/07/2018 21:05

I agree OP. I wouldn't have voted for Trump and am not a fan but I wonder where all these virtue-signalling protesters were when Mugabe came here. Also the Romanian dictator back in the 80's and many subsequent despots and dictators since then.
I think Sadiq Khan isn't fit for office and look forward to welcoming the baby Sadiq balloon over our skies soon.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 21:23

rosamundhopelovesdogs123 100% agree with you!

echt · 12/07/2018 21:40

Classic whataboutery

Maybe some of them hadn't been born. Maybe they couldn't get out of bed for every dictator. Not protesting against everything else doesn't invalidate this protest. You have to start somewhere.

cardibach · 12/07/2018 21:40

Anti Mugabe protest
I keep posting evidence of protests against other bad leaders, and the Trump apologists still keep going on and on about nobody protest8ng other bad leaders. Read the links.
Also, regarding the Sadie balloon, if you don’t like him, protest. That’s fine. But the baby balloon is to reflect Trump’s childish temper tantrums. Khan is a grown up, even if you don’t like him - somwhats the point of a baby balloon of him?

Failbydefault · 12/07/2018 21:56

I wonder how many of those who are opposed to the protest are non white, Muslim, refugees, Mexican disabled.....? I am marching tomorrow to show solidarity to those minority groups who Trump has maligned or humiliated and to ressaure myself that there are still people in our society who oppose his misogyny, racism and prejudice.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/07/2018 07:49

I'd say see you there Fail, but there will be tens of thousands of us Grin

UneMoonit · 13/07/2018 07:57

Judging the man on how he speaks and acts publicly, this could have profound implications for our US relations and upcoming trade negotiations. The Trump camp has previously been quite friendly to the idea, and becomes less so. A personal slight to the man is likely to prove very unhelpful as he likes to oversee "deals" himself.

It's weird actually, because of everything coming out of the left's mouths since the referendum was announced, suggesting people ought to put our trade relations above political principles or they're selfish idiots, yet they don't seem to agree when it comes to state visits from one of our biggest potential trading partners.

maxthemartian · 13/07/2018 08:00

I on the other hand think that having the US as our most important trading partner would be a disaster for most people in the UK. It would involve poor working conditions and poor food standards. What's left of our NHS would be privatised.
So I hope the protesters cause him grave offense today.

MarshaBradyo · 13/07/2018 08:03

Listening to Khan on R4 I still think the balloon was a mistake - listening to him speak, probably even more so now

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/07/2018 08:05

Even if you don't like the balloon, it's still not Khans job to judge what others will find distasteful. He has to act within the law. What kind of city would it be where the Mayor over rode the rule of law on freedom of protest?

lostincake · 13/07/2018 08:11

I lay money on it that the Sadiq Khan one doesn't even get into the air.

Why wouldn't it? Khan is all for free expression and I am sure he can take a joke. Unless he doesn't allow a blimp of himself to be flown (which would be a bit weird considering he has allowed the Trump blimp and is a big supporter of peaceful protest/expression).

They Khan blimp has already raised £50k although I think it is wasted on making a puerile point, they should at least be allowed to fly it if they so wish. Peaceful protest should be allowed.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/07/2018 08:11

I just think it is extremely rude to allow this balloon. Whatever else, he is a visitor to the country and it just seems rather inhospitable.

echt · 13/07/2018 08:18

I rather think that's the intention. He is not welcome. Why do you think it's taken so long for him to get here? It's because he is held in such odium and contempt by so many.

ToffeeUp · 13/07/2018 08:19

Trump supporters had plenty of time to arrange an 'i love donald' blimp if they wanted to and ofcourse it would have been allowed

By all means organise an anti Khan protesst with a baby Khan balloon if you want.

Personally, I think the Trump baby blimp is funny and it certainly has people talking. Good luck to all protesters!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/07/2018 08:23

I don’t think protesting is ever a waste of time

But with Trump the more attention he gets the more it feeds into his ego

Though the ballon will no doubt annoy him his response will be well I’m the president of the US the most powerful position in he World

He is used to being mocked and this unfortunately makes his support greater those who feel they are at the bottom of the pile who feel only he listens and only he speaks for them we saw this with Farage our mistake was to not take him seriously and this is happening with Trump

lostincake · 13/07/2018 08:23

Both blimps are puerile. This is what politics has come down to...opposing groups making giant balloons of politicians in nappies. Politics has turned into Big Brother (the tv show). I despair!

NanaNoodleman · 13/07/2018 08:26

It’s rude to allow the balloon? How rude is it to give interviews to the press undermining the PM who has invited you here?
I hope the queen is despatching a flunky to advise the ludicrous orange haired fascist and his Barbie that their presence is not required at Windsor today

derxa · 13/07/2018 08:28

I agree. It's pitiful.

Yeah that seems fair - putting fear about trade relations above what you believe in and care about is effectively the mentality of a coward, isn't it. You have to deal with the important stuff first and if you have to live without the 30 pieces of silver you do.

Certainly wouldn't call you names for that stance, it's the only sensible one.
