I don't like him or agree with his policies, but what good is it going to do walking around with a giant helium balloon of a baby?

Loads of horrible world leaders from the middle East that are doing far far woorse and they get a royal visit over here with no one batting an eyelid. Just smacks of double standards to me.

"Under Sadiq Khan, we have seen crime sky rocket to unprecedented levels. People in London don't feel safe and they aren't safe, 81 murders this year alone! Khan Out."

I love this little quote from that link.

Its not true however, we had siginifcantly more murders in London every year of the 90s and 2000s. Knife crime was at extremely similar levels in 2010/11 and 12.

But hey, since when did the right wing need facts for accurate critique?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/07/2018 15:44

You know, this isn't my first protest Hmm Most of the time the press ignore the ones I go on.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/07/2018 15:45

Its always whatabout whatabout...

TemptressofWaikiki · 12/07/2018 15:55

Under Sadiq Khan, we have seen crime sky rocket to unprecedented levels. People in London don't feel safe and they aren't safe, 81 murders this year alone! Khan Out.

Besides someone else further up the thread debunking this as cheap and uniformed rhetorics, the real issue stems from the massive funding cuts for the police forces. How the hell can anyone tackle knife and other crime when the budget is squeezed more and more!

TemptressofWaikiki · 12/07/2018 15:56

uninformed ^ Bit of a Freudian slip or two there. Think of the lack of uniformed police officers on the streets....

ItsJanetDammit · 12/07/2018 15:57

I’m going and I’m and extremely straight laced, gainfully employed educated woman and I’m not at all ‘right on’ about anything Hmm it will be my first protest.

I’m not going because I want to take selfies or because I believe it will make a difference. I’m going because the thought of not going makes me feel like the most useless hypocrite in the world. That’s not to say that’s what I think of others, but I can’t live with myself if I sit at my desk tomorrow watching him fly around the country being entertained with my tax money when he stands for literally everything I hate. I can’t do it.

I’m a woman and I object to his treatment of women.

I’m not white and I object to his treatment of the non-white.

I’m a human and I object to his lack of humanity.

Yes we are entertaining the office of the US president but this is NOT a state visit.

While the wotsit goblin is on my country’s soil I will not sit and not express my displeasure.

And that is my right.

ManyCrisps · 12/07/2018 16:01

Phosphorus America is very welcoming to immigrants not the illegal ones though who are literally criminals.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 16:04

I agree, trump is a nob but there are far worse politicians out there. Never heard anyone moaning about Robert Mugabe even though he committed genocide. It’s fashionable for millennials to hate trump.

I think we would do better to ignore the Pratt. He would HATE that.

insideoutsider · 12/07/2018 16:35

Trump didn't put himself in office. He is not a military dictator that murdered his predecessor and half the country. The American people put him in office!

He's a bad person, agreed - the American people knew of these horrible behaviours that you are outraged about and they still chose HIM over every other option.

He was elected for promising to do these 'evil' things that he is following through with - something our politicians are completely incapable of doing (making and keeping promises).

Yet, we choose to protest him. I hope you will all come out in force to protest brutal dictators that we roll the red carpet out for... and make a ballon of them (You probably wouldn't dare).

The American people put him there. Remember that while you're protesting.

Hedwig86 · 12/07/2018 16:41

Objectively, Trump isn’t as bad as other world leaders.

He is, however, probably the biggest threat western democracy has faced in a generation. He absolutely should not have been invited. Well done to those who are protesting.

OyWithThePoodles · 12/07/2018 17:01

I hope all the people stanning for Trump on this thread are either making mischief for their own amusement or getting paid to post. Mumsnet never fails to surprise me Shock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/07/2018 17:09

ignoring Trump is not any form of protest. How is doing nothing a protest?

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 17:29

OhYouBadBadKitten doing nothing is what most people do with other truly evil dictators. It’s cool for people to protest trump but the same people didn’t protest Putin cause they didn’t read about it on Facebook/Twitter. Good luck to them but it’s mass hysteria. I wouldn’t waste my time.

AuntyElle · 12/07/2018 17:52

Thanks, ItsJanetDammit, as this thread was making really depressing reading.
I’m pretty much lost for words by those defending Trump as not as bad as ‘xxx dictator’. FFS.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 18:16

AuntyElle you should probably read up on world politics if you are comparing Trump to the likes of Robert Mugabe!!! He’s not even in the same League

AuntyElle · 12/07/2018 18:25

I’m not making that comparison, NoNotheresnolyrics.
And patronising, prissy shit such as “you should probably read up on world politics...” really doesn’t cut it.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 18:33

I’d probably vote for Trump if I was American (like an awful lot of Americans did). So I won’t be protesting.

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 18:38

I find it incredibly irritating the sheeplike stampede to hate Trump. He’s such an easy person to hate because everyone regurgitates the same boring rhetoric that thier mate has repeated from the Guardian website. Let’s discuss the evil persecution that’s happening in Tibet oh no it’s just easier to I hate Trump without having to think too much. The Americans voted in Trump democratically. It’s not our country. Calm down

OrangeGoblinHunter · 12/07/2018 18:40

nonot why would you vote trump? Not goady, genuinely interested

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 19:06

OrangeGoblinHunter I said if I was American! I’m English, so I believe in the NHS and the social state. If I was American I would be likely to believe in the ability for anyone to climb the economic ladder as long as they work hard, freedom to live my life the way I want to, business et al. Trump opitimises the American dream so yes, if I was American, I would vote Trump. In reality I’m more likely to vote for Jeremy Corbyn! My point is being part of a democracy we must tolerate others views. That’s why I don’t hate anyone who voted Brexit for example. I don’t know how their life experiences that have influenced their decisions just like I don’t know how an American person feels in Texas! I won’t be protesting Trump because lots of Americans voted for him and are happy he’s there. I would protest a visit from Omar al-Bashir and the likes though, they are true evil dictators. It just grates on me how people care so much about trump/the west but they don’t seem to care too much about people in Africa etc

NoNotheresnolyrics · 12/07/2018 19:14

I’d also like to add that I think the warning to Americans to stay safe in our country , due to these protests, is fucking disgusting. Shameful.

Mookatron · 12/07/2018 19:38

Did I read the wrong warning? People keep saying it's disgusting but the warning I read on the American Embassy in London website is not much different from the normal travel messages they send out all the time. Exercise caution. Don't fit the 'ugly American' type. Run away from trouble.

Metoodear · 12/07/2018 19:40

SchrodingersBox

This

The behaviour of the Turkish president is actually much more shocking

Anniegetyourgun · 12/07/2018 19:48

Several posters suggesting we should be protesting about North Korea instead. Now that really would be pointless. Kim Jong Un has not been invited to visit the UK, probably wouldn't come if he were, and the North Korean people would never get to hear of it because they aren't allowed access to Western media. As a nation they're pretty much isolated from the outside world.

And did someone say Tibet? President Xi of China made a state visit in 2015. There were indeed protests about Tibet, and human rights more generally, outside Buckingham Palace for example - couldn't be bothered to Google the whole story but a quick check up confirmed my vague memories of marches n stuff (my memory is always vague). There were, of course, also counter-marches saying how fabulous China and its President were. The police had a slightly tricky time keeping them well away from each other, just in case.

Anniegetyourgun · 12/07/2018 19:51

ps Also, did I imagine it or does the UK maintain stiff trade sanctions against North Korea? So as a nation we're actually doing something about them.
