The rest of the world listens in disbelief and bemusement to the hype knowing that the fall will come with a mighty crash

I don't know why you think you speak for the rest of the world, but you're wrong. I live outside England and nobody in my region was listening in disbelief or bemusement. And there is always the exact same hype about our own country's team while it's still in the tournament. It's normal. It's not specific to England.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 12:16

RoseWhiteTips

That's OK. I suspected there was no remotely logical reason as to why you are posting a list of teams who exited the World Cup at an earlier stage than England (some didn't even manage to qualify at all).

And now you've confirmed it. Hope you don't choke on all that bile.

specialsubject · 12/07/2018 12:16

it would have been fun to see the team get to the final, but Croatia were better. And only one team can win anyway so there will always be a lot more losers.

being upset about it is as saddo as being upset about the ending of a tv programme. Spectator sport is the same thing.

what impressed me is the air of an actual team, which is rare in 'team' sports as anyone who played at school will know. No superstars, no queen bees, just lots of people working together although unfortunately not well enough. No worship of the likes of Rooney.

and very little coverage of those whose only claim to fame is that they have sex with a footballer, which is as it should be.

itsclaire · 12/07/2018 12:16

This is very outing but the daughter of the man who “lives” football had an Everton wedding.

The bouquet was black and white like a football, the bride wore white with blue nails and accessories, the groom and their children wore bright blue suits. The brides dress was sleeveless to show off her new Everton tattoo. All family members who supported any other team (mostly Liverpool) were not allowed to attend. No guest was allowed to wear anything red. The cake was in the team colours with ribbons.

I am amazed by this level of fanaticism but, as long as they are not hurting anyone else, each to their own I suppose.

I am just grateful that my DH loathes football!

itsclaire · 12/07/2018 12:18

Yes exactly. Someone has to win. I expect the Croatian football fans are delighted.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/07/2018 12:22

Nope, totally predictable

Seasawride · 12/07/2018 12:36

Ah I thought they played well first half but Croatia deserved to win for their spectacular second half.

I hate all this ‘other countries laugh at us’ it’s such bollocks as they really don’t care a stuff if you want to see manic footi fans watch the Argentina fans. I hate this supercilious attitude about especially England. I am very proud to be English and proud of the way the players and managers have conducted themselves on the pitch and off. Those who slag off their own country are saddos and boring on here and in RL.

Roll on the Euroes Grin

Hope Croatia beat France Grin

Why does everyone take the ‘Football’s coming home’ thing so literally? It’s a catchy line from song and doesn’t necessarily mean winning the World Cup. If you look at the millions of people who got into it over the last 4 weeks, you could certainly say football has come home.

If you want a rediculous song, you should try going to watch a League 2 match where at least one set of supporters will sing ‘we’re by far the greatest team the world has ever seen’ (tune of Wild Rover), even though they’re playing in a 4 division relegation dogfight.

morningconstitutional2017 · 12/07/2018 12:43

I wouldn't say I'm gutted exactly, but I think it's a shame. We English have got used to not quite getting there these days and 'there's always next time' etc.
I remember the glory of 1966 when we were in B&W. Happy days.

Elphame · 12/07/2018 12:45

Not gutted in the slightest.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 12:47

Thank you!

I've said the same thing more times than I care to remember over these past few days. The song is wistful and nostalgic, not arrogant or presumptous.

Seeing as it was written nearly a quarter of a century ago, you'd think people would be aware of that. But I guess that's what happens when you only remembered football exists a week ago.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 12:59

What you didn't see on TV! England players took quick restart while Croatia stars celebrated Mandzukic's winner as they tried sneaky bid to capitalise on confusion over rules

Think the problem was wasn't really tested and when they were it didn't go to plan..Belguim, Croatia etc. That's why not surprised by yesterday especially after the missed chances.

Been intresting to see how far they'd gone of they had finished top wherever gotten as far as they but can only beat whose in front of you

Hopefully for euros they've be able to score more from open play

WorldWideWanderer · 12/07/2018 13:13

Oh dear.....
But I did say a few days back that it really, really WASN'T coming home....
Got shouted down of course, but I just had that feeling it wasn't coming home.
Not gutted at all; as others have said, it's a game. I can't get that excited over it to be honest.

Hookedoncatnip · 12/07/2018 13:30

I was disappointed but they did themselves proud.

All that "it's coming home" crap was getting irritating though!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/07/2018 13:30

I learned this morning that our local police service have just had their worst night ever in callouts for disorder and violence. Worse still, the pub fight I mentioned apparently ended in a young man being blinded in one eye by a glassing incident - so for the rest of his life that 23 year old is going to be partially sighted with all that entails

And all over a football match Sad

hmcAsWas · 12/07/2018 13:30

Thank you DiegoMadonna, exactly - the rest of the world doesn't give a stuff either way. Why would they.

blueskypink · 12/07/2018 13:43

Puzzled - that is so awful. My 21 year old was out and about last night and I was really worried he might run into some bother.

scarbados · 12/07/2018 13:47

Not in the least 'guttted'. More like 'Don't give a shit' . I jus tlove the way football fans think we'll all share their obsession. It's a fucking game.

Coffeeisyourfriend · 12/07/2018 14:40

I was gutted for myself rather than the players - I was hoping they'd win so I could ask DP whilst he's in a good mood to take me shopping for housey things at the weekend (knowing he'd say ''here's a hundred, take your mum'')
I'm not shopping this weekend Sad

itsclaire · 12/07/2018 14:42

Coffeeisyourfriend

Please say this is a joke

Costacoffeeplease · 12/07/2018 14:47

Coffeeisyourfriend. Seriously? Confused

Coffeeisyourfriend · 12/07/2018 14:48

itsclaire why should it be a joke?
