The manner of defeat is irrelevant.

Only if you care nothing about sport.

You honestly can't see the difference between the world champions being sent packing by South Korea at the group stages, and an unfancied young England team reaching the semi-final?

Honestly?

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 11:33

Before Germany were knocked out, there was a delicious moment on the BBC’s coverage when Lineker indulged in some anti German sentiment and delivered one of his snide, ‘wink wink we love the Germans really’ looks to camera.

The camera had moved to the interviewee but panned back to catch it. What a good sport he is.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 11:33

the fall will come with a mighty crash.

Being defeated 2-1 in extra time by a superior side is a 'mighty crash'?

blueskypink · 12/07/2018 11:34

I don't think there's any point in continuing this conversation*

Well we're agreed on one thing Grin

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 11:34

Could you quote this 'anti German sentiment'?

You are being obtuse. Mocking Germany was seen as fair game but we reach peak snowflake if someone questions England's defeat.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 11:37

The whole thing was there for the taking as far as England was concerned. And they just could not believe their luck:

No Italy
No Germany
No Holland
No Brazil
No Argentina

They were rubbing their hands in barely concealed glee.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 11:37

Who is 'questioning England's defeat'?

The vast majority of commentary I have read/heard is that England deserved to lose to Croatia and all things considered, were lucky to get as far as they did. Look at the comments on this page for examples. Pretty much everyone is saying Croatia deserved to go through.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 11:39

Quote it?! Don’t be utterly stupid. It was one moment of many moments. Lol

🙄

Nailed it. That pretty much paraphrases the drivel they are allowed to spout. Excellent piece from a good source.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 11:42

In which case it should be very easy to quote examples.

On ITV last night, after the game pundit Roy Keane suggested fellow pundits were getting ahead of themselves with England's progress. This led to an arguement between Keane and Ian Wright in which the latter resorted to mocking Keane's accent. Classy.

How could I forget?!

No Portugal

🙂

DontCallMeCharlotte · 12/07/2018 11:49

Well I would have been delighted if they'd won and I was certainly disappointed at the loss but not gutted (even though I know we will never get a better opportunity).

But then I put myself through the wringer in 1990 and 1996 (very public sobbing both times!) and it turns out that last night I had no more tears left to cry. Or maybe I've just gained more of a sense of proportion in the intervening years.

I did love the Hyde Park goal celebration footage though!

I must say I'm puzzled at what you think you're acheiving by providing a list of teams who got knocked out of the tournament before England did, or in some cases didn't even manage to qualify.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 11:50

The mocking of Roy Keanes’s accent was pitiful. Just more of the same sort of thing, sadly.

itsclaire · 12/07/2018 11:52

KlutzyDraconequus Yes that is it exactly.

I remember when the grandson was born and my friend’s h bought him a onesie in the football colours of the team he supports, like a tiny football strip. He wanted the baby to wear it at his Christening.

I wish I were joking.

I don’t know why I even say that because many people I’ve spoken to think that it would be a lovely idea 😫. All to do with the “God’s game played at God’s ground” I suppose.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 11:53

The teams - as most readers will realise - are the BIG teams. How very heartening for England to know they did not qualify or were knocked out.

Hmm
Moneypenny007 · 12/07/2018 11:56

Nope. Yes exciting getting this far.

But talk about counting your chickens....
And as being nasty to Keane when he pointed it out.
They underestimate Croatia. You all wrote them off as "Not good enough to worry about"... They got to the semi finals too.
It's tough to lose on such a huge stage. No doubt about it. But I'm very glad that we don't have to listen to the "It's coming home shit" anymore.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2018 11:56

I'm not sure if I'd call Portugal or Holland a BIG team, but hey, thanks for the heads-up.

Still, not getting your point though. Every single one of these teams was less succesful than England at this WC. Maybe you should take a break from gloating over England losing a semi-final by one goal in extra time, and have a go at mocking these teams and their fans? You sound as though you could stand a bit of variety in your life.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 12:03

And you don’t?! 🤣 The typical last resort of a Mumsnet poster...

RoseWhiteTips · 12/07/2018 12:05

I think you’re overly invested in this, IcedPurple!

(That’s another favourite but it does seem to apply nicely...)
