Fafoutis I am so sorry that happened to your mother and that you had to witness it Flowers

"I honestly think a lot of people posting here simply haven't got a clue".

Amen to that!

DiegoMadonna · 12/07/2018 00:06

Mostly disappointed because it's unusual to get such a good chance to make it to the final!

If we had lost to France or Belgium in the semi, there'd be an air of inevitability about it and it wouldn't feel so frustrating.

That said, I'm hoping our young team continues to improve enough that in future tournaments, we will be able to hold our own against even those big teams. The future is very bright –this England team was the second youngest at the tournament, and we also won both the U17s AND U20s world cups last year. Bright prospects!

"I honestly think a lot of people posting here simply haven't got a clue".

The OP's question asked who was gutted, not who had an in-depth understanding of football technicalities and fan culture.

*But I do think England players did their country, and Britain as a whole, proud"

They were representing England and England only*

Can only agree with that because lets face it - Scotland, Wales or Ireland aren.t nearly in the same league Grin

mirialis · 12/07/2018 00:14

KS34 well i was trying "bring something else into it" because some people who were gutted/jubilant England lost need to get a little perspective and thought a feel good story about the Thai footballers being rescued from hell might help with that.... but obviously not.

So let's get real - England did better than expected than at the start of the tournament but they are not a great and/or experienced team (yet) and it would have been a totally jammy fluke if they'd got to the final let alone won the WC. There is clearly a talent pool there and there is absolutely shitloads of financial backing. The inexperienced caretaker manager has now turned out to be a diamond in the rough and hopefully he will help them take advantage of all the opportunities England players have that are begging for the taking.

That's not what I'm talking about though.

I'm referring to people using the 'Coming Home' song as evidence of 'arrogance' when - as anyone who's bothered to actually listen to the bloody song knows - it is the exact opposite of arrogance.

I'm not a huge footie fan either btw. I don't follow it that much during the year and only really get excited for the big games. But I do think if you're going to offer opinions on something, it helps to be acquainted with at least the basic facts. This isn't a reference to you or your posts, just to certain other posters on these threads.

Sad but proud. Can't wait to for football season to start so I can get back to supporting my failing arsenal! #2020

Not sure, they also failed to win the world cup Smile

Oh come on give yourself a shake - we had a chance - we lost - fine. When has Wales, Scotland or Ireland ever been in with a shout?

People like you disgust me - if Wales were in semi's I'd absolutely support them as being part of Great Britain - the hostility against England from some of the British is vile though I do understand it - you're all shite at sport and we're the best heehe xx

OrraBoralis · 12/07/2018 00:24

Quite Gutted and as a Scot who has disliked the media hype about other England teams and hated the Diva behaviour and WAG's I found myself rooting for England over the weeks. I thought Gareth Southgate was a wonderful example on how to behave and the way he pulled up his players to applaud the crowd was genius.
He showed these young men that although they are hugely disappointed they owe their living and popularity to the fans and I hope the fans appreciate it.
I am hugely disappointed for the team, they were fantastic throughout, but so happy I won't have to hear "It's Coming Home" again!
Commiserations to my down South Neighbours.

No idea what there could possibly be to draw the hostility. Not a single clue in that post....Smile

hmcAsWas · 12/07/2018 00:29

I don't think we need to take a pop at the Scots or the Welsh or the Irish Hmm Not very edifying

thor86 · 12/07/2018 00:30

For the record it's not hostility towards England.

shpongle7 · 12/07/2018 00:34

England did us proud tonight, we didn't win but we went further than we ever have done in my life time or my children, and i guess in I'm most of our children's life time, in two (euros) our in (four) World Cup we will win and bring it home!!! Come on three lions 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

ScreamingValenta · 12/07/2018 00:35

@IcedPurple Point taken. I can see that most fans are simply supporting a team/sport they love. I hope everyone will take solace from having come this far in the tournament; especially if England win the 3rd place match on Saturday, which I still think would be no small achievement even if it's not memorable in the long-term.

I watched England win the world cup in 1966 and it was glorious. That’s enough to last me my life time.

ReanimatedSGB · 12/07/2018 00:43

Quite pleased, tbh. Now my weekend isn't going to be fucked up by footballing, because all but the really enthusiastic/obsessive men's football fans will shrug and go back to normal instead of all this bullshit 'but you MUST move your important-to-you event or have the television on all day because EVERYONE is interested in men's football and if you are not there is something WRONG with you'...
Yeah yeah, disappointing for the footballers who didn't win, but that's part of being in competitions (of any kind): someone wins and someone else doesn't.

ScreamingValenta · 12/07/2018 00:43

there's no I in team

There is an m.e. though (as I delight in pointing out when this is parroted in a yucky corporate context Grin )

Choccywoccyhooha · 12/07/2018 00:46

No, I'm not gutted, I support France and am very very happy! Now I just have to find a French football song as annoying as 3 Lions so I can play it in the garden at the same volume and frequency as my neighbours have been playing that particular song for the last two weeks.
I'm very impressed with Croatia, a country with the population of half that of London and they've made it all the way to the final. Deserving opponents on Sunday, I can't wait.

The Jules Rimet trophy IS coming home, to France. Allez les Bleus!

LemonysSnicket · 12/07/2018 00:46

I'm actually devastated

2up2manydown · 12/07/2018 00:48

So sad for all the children who will be so disappointed by the loss. It was quite thrilling for them. The team did extremely well. I do wonder about posters who come into these threads just to let everyone know how uninteresting they find football and to state inane truths like “my life remains the same either way”.

Some people are so joyless. I love seeing people coming together to celebrate and take pride in their country. It’s fun. It’s happiness. Some people really don’t like to see others too happy though, it makes them feel inadequate.

mirialis · 12/07/2018 00:50

People like you disgust me - if Wales were in semi's I'd absolutely support them as being part of Great Britain....

then you simply show that you don't understand how football rivalry works.

Look - can anyone honestly say that England were a better team than Belgium (clearly England's B team were not up to Belgium's B team) or that Southgate is a better manager than Martinez? It's disappointing for sure, but not undeserved and very much not undermining hope for the future. It was beyond dreams and expectations for Southgate and his team to get to the SFs this year.

ReanimatedSGB · 12/07/2018 00:58

While I find all sport competitions utterly dull, I have a more active dislike of men's football, because it is the worst for bringing out the stupid and obnoxious. Pretty much all the ghastly sport-related social problems are connected with men's football more than any other sport: domestic violence, sectarian violence, nationalist violence, the expectation that everyone and everything else must give way to a men's football match...
Yes, there are nice people who can enjoy watching sports on television (or even in the live audience) without being tiresome or dickish about it. But these international men's football competitions bring out the absolute worst in the stupid, so it's a really good thing that it's all over now.
