Aah, responding in kind? I see, why stoop to that level as a wholly superior non football fan? Baffling.

Are you quite alright? I never said I was superior. And I am a football fan. I'm not an England fan. :)

flaxensunshine · 11/07/2018 23:47

Why only aimed at men?

KS34 · 11/07/2018 23:49

Mirialis, of course it is in the grand scheme of things, but it's a distraction. I love sport and all the emotions that go with it, it's not life and death but that doesn't render it meaningless.

KS34 · 11/07/2018 23:49

It's just how you came across.

moofolk · 11/07/2018 23:49

Yep. Gutted, but still we done good!

My eldest got into it for the first time this year which has been great. I love the fun and family bonding big football tournaments bring, hoping to carry it over into the club season.

He was inconsolable tonight though bless him.

Isadora2007 · 11/07/2018 23:50

I’m not gutted. But I do think England players did their country, and Britain as a whole, proud. I don’t think all English fans are arrogant etc but I didn’t like the way that England fans were booing when Croatia had the ball at points in the game- and cheering when they missed etc. Thankfully there wasn’t too much of that.
I can’t help but wonder why so many people were going on about “it’s Coming Home” as they surely knew the “You’re coming home” retorts would be tenfold should this result happen... hoisted by their own petard a little...

Regingaphalange · 11/07/2018 23:50

Not an England fan and so so glad all this coming home rubbish will stop for a while Grin

IcedPurple · 11/07/2018 23:50

A team like England with the potential talent pool and financial backing it has should be expecting to make QF as a minimum and when it does/doesn't either way it's going to occupy a lot of attention and analysis from the media. It is the same in equivalent resource/population football-as-main-sport countries.

Exactly!

I was in Spain last week. There was endless media analysis about how the great ex WC winners were knocked out by Russia's pub team. No different to how it would be in England.... or Italy, or Germany. I'm sure the German media was full of it when Germany was knocked out.

That's not 'arrogance'. It's just how things are when countries are involved in major sporting events they might be expected to do well in. I honestly think a lot of people posting here simply haven't got a clue.

KS34 · 11/07/2018 23:50

And if asking if I'm alright isn't condescending, not sure what is. If only I knew how to do a smiley face!

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 11/07/2018 23:51

ScreamingValenta I can remember the chants we sang at the first match I went to in 1986, that I had a hot dog and that the stand we were in has since been pulled down and converted to seating, also the informal name of said stand! It's emotional!

BrokenWing · 11/07/2018 23:52

Not gutted (Scottish), disappointed for them and sorry to see them out, but Croatia were the better team tonight.

Hopefully they will go on to win the 3rd placing.

spudlet7 · 11/07/2018 23:52

Gutted would be overstating it for me personally, but I am disappointed. And also simultaneously a bit proud of how far we got Smile

Rollonweekend · 11/07/2018 23:52

I"m not English but was supporting them today as I like the team and Southgate. Very disappointed as it had created a real feel good atmosphere in London and Sunday would have been amazing if they made the final.

What is a shame is when England seem to turn on their teams when they lose .... there were guys outside chanting this eve 'they f@cking shit' (to the tune of 'is coming home') and that's not nice. Support them win or lose if they're your team.

IcedPurple · 11/07/2018 23:52

I didn’t like the way that England fans were booing when Croatia had the ball at points in the game-

That wasn't England fans - it was local Russian fans!

They booed the obnoxious Domagoj Vida who had gloated about defeating Russia with a video praising Ukranian miliitia. Hence the boos.

Waspnest · 11/07/2018 23:53

Maybe not gutted but I think it's a shame England went out. As a pp said, this team and especially GS have been fantastic role models for a lot of young kids and it would have been good for them to see that actually sometimes people who behave decently in life are rewarded.

Yep, we're generally a bit shit. And the odd occasions we aren't are fantastic. So no, don't see the arrogance.

Really? England have come at the worst 4th out of 32 countries in the World cup. Hardly a bit shit ffs

ScreamingValenta · 11/07/2018 23:54

I've never understood the 'football's coming home' chant in the context of the World Cup, because it's not the case that the previous winners host the next tournament.

mirialis · 11/07/2018 23:55

I know it's not meaningless - I watch a lot of sport and sport is obviously a good thing and a source of joy for those kids stuck in the Thai cave who I'm sure are gutted not to be able to snap up the FIFA tickets to the WC final because they have to stay in hospital... I'm just saying it's helpful to remember that the WC is a big nonsense away from the the "jumpers for goalposts" stuff that is supposed to still be at "the heart of football" because it's too easy to get sucked into the hype of wanting England to win/being ABE and forget about what sport should really be going and meaning to people.

NLBM · 11/07/2018 23:55

England players donate their wages to charity, so not sure where 'they're only doing it because they get paid loads' comes into it. You could tell that team felt it was an honour to play for their country.

I'm gutted. But excited that Euro 2020's semi's and final are being played at Wembley! Its coming home 😉🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 they made us proud, and I'm sure they're going to go on to do great things and I'm in love with Jordan Pickford

KS34 · 11/07/2018 23:55

I said generally a bit shit. That's the joy of this occasion that for once we weren't.

Couldn't agree with this more x

Cutietips · 11/07/2018 23:56

Thanks Enthymeme I welcome your condolences esp wrt being same nationality as Piers Morgan. Not in my name, etc, etc.

thor86 · 11/07/2018 23:56

*But I do think England players did their country, and Britain as a whole, proud"

They were representing England and England only

HaroldsSocalledBluetits · 11/07/2018 23:57

Icedpurple re Coming Home, exactly! It's a wistful little fantasy grown in the face of the reality that England haven't won in decades and are supremely unlikely to. It goes into quite some detail about how unlikely this is!

KS34 · 11/07/2018 23:59

Mirialis, I don't disagree but the thread's about England in the world cup, which can and does mean a lot to many people. It's not the most important thing but why bring anything else into it. I'm gutted because seeing England in the final would have been great, possibly a once in a life time event, but I don't think anyone believes it's the be all and end all.
