To say 'get over here if you want England to win'

Ardent supporters, luke warm well wishers (I'm looking at you Scotland and Wales), waistcoat appreciators, Spurs, Arsenal, northern football fans, League 2 strugglers, those whose only interest is the office sweepstake, those playing 'It's coming home' on trumpets at 1am (I still haven't forgiven you for the vuvuzelas), those quietly sipping Chateauneuf du Pape with friends and family, Brexiters, Remainers and basically, anyone and everyone in between who isn't going to use the football as an excuse to jump up and down on emergency response vehicles or piss on a foreigner. Get over here now and leave the naysayers and misery gutses to it.

Come on England!!!

I'm actually agog at the number of people on MN who don't want England to win.

The venom on some of the threads has been pretty full on.

I remember 1990 as a 10 year old. So excited to experience it again as a 38 year old Grin

Trampire · 11/07/2018 16:34

Fair weather football supporter here....

Although I don't support a particular club, I have sat through all the crushing disappointments over the last 3 decades. So I think I do care.

Loving this World Cup. Love the team attitude. Love Gareth Southgate. Feeling very motherly towards little Pickford!!

Come on England!!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Oh and I'm Welsh. Happy to support all countries from U.K.!

I know, it’s very odd.
There isn’t another country on earth who wouldn’t want their team to win the World Cup. I bet France’s social media isn’t full of people hoping their country doesn’t win.
It’s only here people are ashamed of being English. I wish they’d all naff off & live somewhere else.

meditrina · 11/07/2018 16:36

Not remotely a footie supporter, and don't understand the game when watching it actually being played, but get all bound up in this as an occasion.

And have been wearing red capris today

KittyVonCatsworth · 11/07/2018 16:40

Awwwww I love this thread, well done! It makes my heart all non MNetter warm and fuzzy with the Welsh and fellow Scots supporting them xx

Ginorchoc · 11/07/2018 16:48

Going to watch it at an outdoor screening shortly, we can’t wait! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

QueenOfMyWorld · 11/07/2018 16:50

🦁🦁🦁⚽ come on!!

SquirmOfEels · 11/07/2018 16:53

I was walking past two local primaries at their break times today.

Heartening to hear that footie chants are still being handed from one generation to the next in the playground!

beepbeeprichie · 11/07/2018 16:55

Scottish. Definitely supporting England. Nearest neighbours, decent manager, great team. I don’t understand the Anyone But England mentality when it’s taken so seriously and with such venom. Especially when so many of the ABE Scottish footie fans have Man U, Arsenal or Spurs tops and love watching the premiership!

JustWantCake · 11/07/2018 16:56

sooooooo excited for this! Just hope DS settles easily as his bed time is at kick off!

Its so coming home!

VioletPickles · 11/07/2018 17:01

Im in too. The while thing is so stressful!! My DP is scottish and hes being a total prick about it all. I woke up to the strains of the Croation National anthem this morning....Hmm Grin

Setpeace · 11/07/2018 17:03

I'm too nervous! I don't know if my nerves can take it!!

thornyhousewife · 11/07/2018 17:05

Yessssssssss

Just me and the kids tonight. They don't care about football but I've got them a bottle of non alcoholic beer to share which should be exciting enough Grin

chrysalis7 · 11/07/2018 17:07

YES YES I WANT ENGLAND TO WIN THE WORLD CUP! Grin

chrysalis7 · 11/07/2018 17:09

Lovely post! Smile

And FWIW, I would defo be shouting for Scotland to win if you were in the semis (and Wales and NI too...And Ireland.)

chrysalis7 · 11/07/2018 17:11

I also am nervous about it, and almost don't want to watch it!

I am watching it with DH only, coz I don't want to be around ANYone if we lose.......

SilverySurfer · 11/07/2018 17:24

I am rooting for them to win even though I'm not a footie fan but nothing will compare to me watching then win in 1966. I was living in Germany at the time and watched with 20ish Germans who matched every one of my cheers with a boo and hiss Grin

Beeblot · 11/07/2018 17:31

A question for you all, then. If you have younger children who usually go to bed around the time the match is on, what will you do with them?

DD is 5 and lately has not actually been falling asleep until around 8.30 - I think it's the heat. She knows the match is on and asked to watch it. But if she does, she'll probably get bored after 10 minutes and then we'll have to entertain her. And if it happened to go to extra time/penalties, it'll all be a bit late anyway.

I've said she can definitely watch the final if she wants to and we'll have a bit of a party but I'm really in two minds about what to do tonight! How are others handling it???

MarsBarsAreShrinking · 11/07/2018 17:35

@chrysalis7 I know exactly what you mean. As the clock is ticking closer and closer to 7.00pm my stomach keeps doing unpleasant little flips, you know like when you're going to the dentist or have a job interview coming up?

We thought about going to the pub or a local University will be playing it on the outdoor big screen but I couldn't bare it; it'll be heartbreaking enough if we lose, I don't want to be surrounded by people. At least at home I can just take myself off to the garden to bawl in peace Blush So it'll be me, DH, adult DD and the dog at home, anxiously chewing our nails from 7.00pm. Well, probably not the dog... although he is half Croatian on his father's side so who knows!

AuntieStella · 11/07/2018 17:39

I think 5 is on the young side, but I'd probably let DC stay up in pyjamas. But only on the strict condition that the grown ups are watching and so not available to play etc. If it becomes boring, she is to take herself to bed, and you'll come and check she's all OK at half time.

AuntieStella · 11/07/2018 17:40

I'm about to be off to run club as usual. Well nearly as usual as we're starting early, planning a short session and then heading for the pub. Could be fun!

Aliiiii · 11/07/2018 17:42

I'm so excited! I've had butterflies all day

Oysterbabe · 11/07/2018 17:52

There's zero chance that my 2 will be in bed by 7 or let me watch the match in peace. The little buggers ruin everything. I'll just have to watch what I can.

Oblomov18 · 11/07/2018 17:58

I want them to. But I'm not convinced they are going to. Prepared to be pleasantly surprised.

time4chocolate · 11/07/2018 18:15

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 - let’s hope we can get it done in 90mins, my nerves won’t take ET and penalties again!!
