AIBU - World Cup final and 6yo Birthday party

Viktorella · 10/07/2018 10:23

A boy in DD1's class is having a whole class party this Sunday (3pm-5pm)

Given that there's now some chance of England making it to the final, I assumed that the parents would be factoring that in to their planning at this stage (I know I would be if it was my daughter's party)...maybe moving the time of the party or having a big screen to show football at party.

I casually asked the boy's mum about it yesterday and it clearly hadn't entered her mind. She huffily responded "Well I can hardly cancel the party!"

AIBU to think that, if she doesn't consider it, she might end up with a lot of kids not attending? I wouldn't want my daughter to go (although would probably still take her out of guilt) and I'm far from being a football fan!

Historic moments in British sport don’t have to involve combined British teams. Where’s the logic in that? Of course England winning was a historic moment in British sport. How petty must you be to argue otherwise?

Wales reaching the Euro semi-finals was a historic moment for British sport.

Scotland winning 19 gold medals at the Commonwealth games was historic for British sport.

Get over yourselves.

stationthirteen · 10/07/2018 12:04

And you can have it on the radio in the car. It's really not a big deal.

OftenHangry · 10/07/2018 12:05

For those saying it has 0 significance for England if they win. No it doesn't.
It helps tourism thus businesses here. Massive sale of merchandise brings money in as well. All the independent pubs being full is great for them as well.
And last but not least... It gives something to people they can get excited and happy about. And that is really needed nowadays. I am quite resilient, not a big football fan, I am not even English 😂 yet even I got swooped in by the excitement.
It is a shame about the party and I hope the kid will not suffer.

BoneShaker · 10/07/2018 12:05

"Stop calling it ' Mens football ' and ' Mens football match ' ."

Even though it's a football match that is being played exclusively by men? Confused

TheOrigFV45 · 10/07/2018 12:05

I have two events planned for Sunday - a running race and DS2's football team sign on session.

The race organisers have jiggled things so it will be finished around 2.40pm rather than a more vague cut off later on, and the team sign on will be postponed if England make the final.

These are two long-standing annual events, but have both acknowledged that people will want to watch the final if England are playing.

DS2 is a huge football fan and will be watching the match regardless of who's playing. He would have declined the invitation.

I think if it was my child's party I would try and postpone.

araiwa · 10/07/2018 12:06

If you dont like football- fair enough

But to be so ignorant that over half the nation will be watching it, as it is important to them is just dim

SoddingUnicorns · 10/07/2018 12:06

Uh huh, whatever you say.

Funny how it’s the ones being offensive that are always so quick to justify it eh?

Unreal.

Just a tip, if you tell someone that something which is offensive isn’t, that makes you the ignorant one.

But hey, we should all just fall in line eh?

Outside England, this isn’t a big deal. Of course it’s a massive deal in England, and it should be, it’s huge for them and their national team.

The assumption that it’s important for anyone else is beyond arrogant.

Baubletrouble43 · 10/07/2018 12:07

I agree with afrikat. Like it or not , if England make it to the final, and there is a good chance they will, a piece of history is being made. Like murray winning Wimbledon. Some of you are so miserable!

JacquesHammer · 10/07/2018 12:10

Even though it's a football match that is being played exclusively by men?

Well yes.

During the Womens’ World Cup I won’t be calling it “Womens’ football”. I’ll be calling it “the World Cup”. Given they’re not running concurrently I don’t think there’s any risk of confusion

ToffeePennie · 10/07/2018 12:11

It is my boys 4th birthday on the same day. We are doing soft play. I have already been called and told the staff will be short because of the game, there may be a television (sound turned off) and we may have to serve the food/so the party games ourselves. Which is fine by me.
I couldn’t care less about the football, those that do have been reminded. But for me 15/07 is ALWAYS going to be my big boys birthday and no silly game of 11 blokes thundering up and down a strip of turf chasing a bag of air is going to change that.

Baubletrouble43 · 10/07/2018 12:12

I'm also thinking that forget the parents, I would have thought the kids would want to watch it?

MaryMcCarthy · 10/07/2018 12:12

Just a tip, if you tell someone that something which is offensive isn’t, that makes you the ignorant one.

Just a tip, if you're genuinely offended by English football being equated with British sport then you have issues and should reconsider your priorities in life.

rainingcatsanddog · 10/07/2018 12:13

Personally I think that you did her a favour as she'll have time to come up with a contingency plan. I see primary school kids doing footie training every weekend )and Wednesday evening) on the field behind my house so the people who think all 6 years don't give a shit are very wrong. Mufti days at primary are heavily dominated by football shirt wearing boys and this is an OFSTED Outstanding primary so 😜

It's only on MN that people are snobby about the WC. Aldi are closing stores at 3 if England are in the final and my kids tell me that there's plenty of football chat at school. (We aren't footie fans but googled the score at half time and full time. )

The comments about men kicking a ball etc are infantile. Watching sport or playing footie might not be up your street but it's a massive pastime in England.

Viktorella · 10/07/2018 12:13

stationthirteen I think that's a little unrealistic for a 6yo party - by the time I've found her amongst the kids, wrestled her away from the fun, strapped her in the car etc, you can probably add another 20 mins to the 40 mins driving time...especially as I'll most likely have to take my 2yo along for the ride so as not to disturb DH's enjoyment. Even though I can leave at half time, there's a real possibility of not making it back before the end.

OP posts:
HellenaHandbasket · 10/07/2018 12:13

I genuinely don't know anyone who watches football as intently as so many seem to. I don't even know anyone who watched the last match in its entirety. Do any 6 yr olds really give a fuck? Do people really put watching sport over the kids in an instance like this?

SoddingUnicorns · 10/07/2018 12:14

If you say so. Like I said, arrogance in the extreme.

I don’t have any issues with England doing well, I’ve repeatedly said that I can see why it’s so exciting and fun.

What isn’t right is the interchangeable use of Britain and England.

Just because you can’t see that, doesn’t mean it’s not true.

My priorities are just fine, it’s yours which appear to be skewed. Since you’re so adamant that one country trumps 3. Arrogant and ignorant.

SoddingUnicorns · 10/07/2018 12:16

Anyway, off to hide this thread now. The ignorance on here at the moment is fucking depressing.

I wish the England team all the best tomorrow and on Sunday if they reach the final.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 12:25

It helps tourism thus businesses here

what tourism? The World Cup is held in Russia. I doubt that England qualifying or not has any impact on tourism whatsoever. If Croatia wins tomorrow, not sure they will suddenly see an increase of tourists.

The over-reaction about a football game is ridiculous, unless you are one of the players who will earn a fortune out of it. None of the kids around here are remotely interested by the way. It really is not a big deal for everyone.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 10/07/2018 12:25

@ToffeePennie I hope you're getting some kind of discount in that case?! They're basically asking you to do part of what you're presumably paying them for, just because of the football.

I couldn't give a toss about the football though I completely understand other people do. But I really think it is so rude to change something you've previously agreed on because of it, and that's the point of the Op really. I would have thought the same with the royal wedding - and actually I did miss the wedding because of a prior commitment. Which was annoying, but I didn't cancel because I'm not a bellend.

AmIthatbloodycold · 10/07/2018 12:27

That poor child. I'd be pissed off too if i were her mother

Viktorella · 10/07/2018 12:29

Mum has just messaged me to apologise for being huffy earlier. She's worried that people might drop out of party. No mention of changing plans though Confused
Have reassured her that we'll be there either way but not sure whether I'm giving her false hope as I know that others won't behave the same?

OP posts:
TitsalinaBumSquash · 10/07/2018 12:29

I don't have an option on the party but why the sudden addition of 'men's' football... are you all saying you'd feel different if it were the women's England team in the World Cup? Would it then be ok to be excited? Or are we saying only 'men' enjoy football?

I've been heard such emphasis put on the 'mens' part of it ... its it not just football?

And for all those 'it's just chasing a ball...' blah blah bullshit. Please do show us all how you can run around for 90+ minutes and score goals in the heat with the pressure of hundreds of thousands of fans baring down on you..

Since someone mentioned the royal wedding, why is there such a rush to all shout the loudest about how you're so bored and against it? It's that the 'cool' thing to do now to be different?
Competitive indifference is hilarious.

Justanotherlurker · 10/07/2018 12:34

The over-reaction about a football game is ridiculous, unless you are one of the players who will earn a fortune out of it.

You could be this reductive of pretty much everything, all sport, royal weddings, theatre, tv in general, the list goes on.

Over 20m people watched the last 2 games and that excludes Licensed events and pubs, there are a lot of people who are interested in the game, and all the remain four teams left in the tournament fans are over reacting now.

You personally not liking it does not reflect what is going on, if and it is a big if, we do win tomorrow night there will be even more over reacting that we have reached the final.

lifechangesforever · 10/07/2018 12:35

If Aldi can arrange to close every single shop in the country at 3pm, I'm sure she can rearrange the start time of a children's party.

AmIthatbloodycold · 10/07/2018 12:35

Sodding. I would have said ignorance as well as arrogance.
