AIBU - World Cup final and 6yo Birthday party

A boy in DD1's class is having a whole class party this Sunday (3pm-5pm)

Given that there's now some chance of England making it to the final, I assumed that the parents would be factoring that in to their planning at this stage (I know I would be if it was my daughter's party)...maybe moving the time of the party or having a big screen to show football at party.

I casually asked the boy's mum about it yesterday and it clearly hadn't entered her mind. She huffily responded "Well I can hardly cancel the party!"

AIBU to think that, if she doesn't consider it, she might end up with a lot of kids not attending? I wouldn't want my daughter to go (although would probably still take her out of guilt) and I'm far from being a football fan!

I am in EXACTLY the same situation - party booked two months ago as difficult to get venue - one parent tutted and shook their head at me at pick up. We are arranging a screen but it’s been purely bad luck for us. I will probably drive as many kids as I can to the party to try and help the situation.

It's the world cup, England haven't got this far in the tournament for years so I understand why people would like to watch the football, I'd make arrangements to include the football

FlirtyRomanticToast · 11/07/2018 20:51

Will people be insisting that funerals should be re-scheduled next?

Surely @MrsPeel nobody would be so unutterably selfish enough as to die when the English are doing so well in the World Cup??! I mean, I know not everyone cares about football, fair enough, but lots of people do so anyone with any hint of common sense will have checked the dates well in advance and rearrange their imminent death accordingly. Bloody nerve of some people! It's like they don't even care that it's coming home!!

Leontine · 11/07/2018 20:55

If England do go through it’ll be a huge deal. Even those who don’t give a shit about football realise that, surely?

It’s a shame for the kid right now but at least he’ll have a ‘story’ in years to come.

The party of a friend was cancelled due to the death of Princess Diana when I was a child. We still talked about it years later. It was a party that was never forgotten despite having never even taken place!

Leontine · 11/07/2018 20:57

@flirtyromantictoast funerals are different though as they don’t tend to be arranged so far in advance. Grin

OFuckShitAndBollocks · 11/07/2018 21:22

Surely most parents will just drop off??

bitteroulbag · 11/07/2018 21:37

No longer a problem then? Whereas ici, our weekend is f*cked. Le foot rentre chez nous...

GinghamStyle · 11/07/2018 21:40

What a good job she didn't faff about moving the party and changing plans! We lost!

Tringley · 11/07/2018 21:40

Looks like the kid's party is saved anyway.

sonjadog · 11/07/2018 21:40

Every cloud has a silver lining...

DrCoconut · 11/07/2018 21:45

If a bunch of selfish adults ruin a child's party because they want to watch tv then they should be ashamed. And what sort of message does it send to their children? It's ok to drop your friends if you get a better offer? Disgraceful and a great way to thin out the next Christmas card list or party invites.

PeakPants · 11/07/2018 21:48

Ha!! Well, problem solved now I guess....

NottinghamNeil · 11/07/2018 22:04

Yes. Problem solved. Normality has been restored. Go about your business...

Troubleandstrifebagforlife · 11/07/2018 22:05

If Only the selfish adults had been given the chance to ruin a child’s party

chocolateworshipper · 11/07/2018 22:07

Have a great birthday party OP's DD's friend

MelissaM · 11/07/2018 22:10

Phew!

ReanimatedSGB · 12/07/2018 00:01

Hooray for all the kids (and adults) who now won't have to have their prearranged and important (to them) events wrecked over a lot of blokes chasing balls round fields. Now the people who really, really like men's football can go back to watching and enjoying it for what it is (men chasing balls round fields interminably but each to their own) and everyone else can get on with all the things that matter to them.

psychomath · 12/07/2018 00:33

I will thanks, Reanimated, but what are you going to do with your time now that you'll no longer have to keep fifty different threads updated on just how little you care about this men's football tournament, everyone's incomprehensible obsession with it, and their tendency to shove their opinions on football down other people's throats? Wink

CtrlCandCtrlV · 12/07/2018 07:36

no need to be such a sore loser.
Aren't posters happy there was no need for such drama after all? Good news for the birthday child.

bemusedmoose · 12/07/2018 07:41

Why does the world have to stop for football!? The poor kid had their birthday planned first, you excepted, so you go. You dont just drop it because something like watching tv came up.

Cant believe people are so selfish they either wouldn't turn up or think the kid should move their party. It's a kids birthday for goodness sake - an epic event in their life and adults are actually ok with screwing that up on purpose to watch tv.... B#stards.

Use the radio on your damn phone and listen quietly if you have to or get a grip and just flipping miss it.

Chrisinthemorning · 12/07/2018 07:45

DS party was the other Sunday when they were playing. We had 2 no shows because of it, I found it a bit rude but loads came, it was fine.
Happy news today- the party won’t be ruined after all Grin. You are only 6 once, poor little boy.
It’s my birthday on Sunday so I’m pretty happy too Grin

CtrlCandCtrlV · 12/07/2018 07:45

you do know that it's a moot point as England got their arse kicked last night and are nowhere near the finale, some people got a tad over-excited too early Grin

Karenza0310 · 12/07/2018 08:02

That wouldn't bother me at all. If my son wanted to watch football instead of going then I would keep him home. If he wanted to go to the party I would take him. Now if you wanted to watch football then you should drop your kid at the party and then pick them up when it finishes. I certainly wouldn't play the football on a tv at the party. My kids special day would be more important to me that the football.

ravenmum · 12/07/2018 09:00

I'd rather be over-excited than a miserable spoil-sport :D
Was a good match, and I'm looking forward to seeing France beat Croatia on Sunday!

FrogsAreMean · 12/07/2018 09:44

And peace is restored.....for now
