AIBU - World Cup final and 6yo Birthday party

A boy in DD1's class is having a whole class party this Sunday (3pm-5pm)

Given that there's now some chance of England making it to the final, I assumed that the parents would be factoring that in to their planning at this stage (I know I would be if it was my daughter's party)...maybe moving the time of the party or having a big screen to show football at party.

I casually asked the boy's mum about it yesterday and it clearly hadn't entered her mind. She huffily responded "Well I can hardly cancel the party!"

AIBU to think that, if she doesn't consider it, she might end up with a lot of kids not attending? I wouldn't want my daughter to go (although would probably still take her out of guilt) and I'm far from being a football fan!

Competetive Indifference is hilarious

This. Absolutely.

I hate this - no matter not it is. Royal wedding, FiFA World Cup, Olympics, etc. People think they're cool and edgy to not like something they deem 'popular'.

CanineEnigma · 10/07/2018 12:41

I wonder if all the people taking the piss out of the "potentially historic moment" realise that the 1966 World Cup Final features in a question in the Life in the UK test that those wishing to gain citizenship have to take. So yeah, it would be very culturally important if England get through to the final and especially so if they win.

ravenmum · 10/07/2018 12:49

Since someone mentioned the royal wedding, why is there such a rush to all shout the loudest about how you're so bored and against it?
I was the one who brought it up, and I love any excuse for a celebration :)

littledrummergirl · 10/07/2018 12:50

We had planned a barbecue for ds1 18th birthday. We've compromised and said we will put the tv in the garden and use england plates and napkins.

I plan to sit at the bottom of the garden and entertain those who aren't interested in it. I think it will be nicer to watch it in a group with family anyway.

How patronising! It has nothing to do with being edgy or cool.

I would be interested to hear England won in the same way I was interested when Andy Murray won Wimbledon or when golds were won at the Olympics, but I won't organise my life round it.

The rest of the UK couldn't give a toss about the World Cup, and if Wales, Scotland or NI made the finals, there wouldn't be half this media obsession.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/07/2018 13:00

Most people don't give a flying fuck about grown men running around a field.

That's not true. About 25 million people have watched each game so far; not including those in pubs and fan zones etc.

But this is like anything else in life. Some people really care; some don't at all. Accommodate other people where you can. Go to things that you've committed to. This really isn't that hard.

ravenmum · 10/07/2018 13:02

Well, I guess I'm glad I'm in Germany. Watched the last couple of matches at public viewings here surrounded by Germans who were yelling their heads off despite their own team being long out of it. It's great fun. Sorry it's so miserable in the UK!

KokoandAllBall · 10/07/2018 13:02

If England make it to the final, it would be sensible of her to contact people and try to confirm that non football/England fans in the family can do pick ups and drop offs. Or maybe she/her family could drop kids back at home? I wouldn't just ignore it though.

LeighaJ · 10/07/2018 13:05

Only on MN do people act like the final of the world cup isn't a big deal and hardly anyone but a few men will be watching it. 🤣🤣🤣

IRL even my husband's grandmother that hates football has been watching the world cup.

Singlebutmarried · 10/07/2018 13:07

We have a party to attend, but it finishes before the match.

We’re having a bbq with friends and the kitchen da will probably just bugger about in the paddling pool.

FermatsTheorem · 10/07/2018 13:09

@lifechangesforever bit off the main topic of the thread, but you do realise if DD makes her entrance on Sunday and England actually win, you will be obliged to give her the names of the whole England team as middle names? Wink

Fwiw my money's on a France Croatia final with France to win. France were awesome when they knocked Argentina out.

lifechangesforever · 10/07/2018 13:11

@FermatsTheorem I have considered this 😂 it will be my 30th birthday and England winning the World Cup so it will be a pretty phenomenal day!

DH has already mentioned 'Jules' or 'Kane' as an additional middle name 🙈

OftenHangry · 10/07/2018 13:17

@CtrlCandCtrlV winning it will bring more tourists here. Some people even plan to travel to England to experience the finale here. More football coverage so more visitors to see the stadiums of where players representing play outside of worldcup.

@CanineEnigma exactly! I think Wimbledon has a mention there as well. And Grand National.

ilovesooty · 10/07/2018 13:18

I'm another who's getting very tired of the frequent references from one or two posters to "the men's World Cup".

jarhead123 · 10/07/2018 13:22

I'd probably drop mine off and pick up later.

If it was a staying party then she wouldnt be going

ProfessorMoody · 10/07/2018 13:25

It is the men's World Cup though. There are no women in it.

The Women's World Cup is next year.

CrochetBelle · 10/07/2018 13:25

Most people don't give a flying fuck about grown men running around a field.

That's not true. About 25 million people have watched each game so far; not including those in pubs and fan zones etc.

Then that is true. You realise that 25 million people isn't most of the population? It isn't even most of the UK.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 13:26

Only on MN do people act like the final of the world cup isn't a big deal and hardly anyone but a few men will be watching it

meanwhile, in the real world, half my male-orientated office is interested, half doesn't give a monkey or is really not that bothered.

We are not even in the final yet!

Are people really planning on going to France, Belgium or Croatia this weekend to watch the final is England is not in it?

ravenmum · 10/07/2018 13:31

You realise that 25 million people isn't most of the population?
Brilliant - in that case the 17 million who voted for Brexit should not get any say in the matter.

CrochetBelle · 10/07/2018 13:37

Well, no, because most of the voters voted to leave. That's how a vote works.
I'm not sure of the comparison Confused

Do you understand the meaning of the word 'most'?

ravenmum · 10/07/2018 13:40

I was jokingly saying that if most of the population did not vote for Brexit, they should not have a say. No need to be patronising.

stationthirteen · 10/07/2018 13:42

stationthirteen I think that's a little unrealistic for a 6yo party - by the time I've found her amongst the kids, wrestled her away from the fun, strapped her in the car etc, you can probably add another 20 mins to the 40 mins driving time...especially as I'll most likely have to take my 2yo along for the ride so as not to disturb DH's enjoyment. Even though I can leave at half time, there's a real possibility of not making it back before the end.

Then you need to set expectations with her beforehand that when you come to collect you will be leaving promptly.

I'm sure she will be easy to find given that you think so many people will drop out.

Moonkissedlegs · 10/07/2018 13:46

I'm not hugely into football, but if England got to the World Cup Final I don't think I would be taking my kid to that party! This hasn't happened in over 50 years and might not happen again in our lifetime, its hardly unreasonable to want to watch it!

Poor child, I think the parents should have made other plans. They will be praying England lose tomorrow I bet!

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 13:50

it's also misleading to assume that everybody who did watch the previous matches are nuts about it. There are many people who watch if it happens to be convenient and in a party of some kind where they are, but who won't go out of their way to watch the next one.

If you have committed to a kids party on Sunday, unless you have a medical emergency, you do go. It's basic manners, and it's the right thing to do for your kids. Changing your mind at the last minute because it's not that convenient is rude. The time to decline was when you RSVP, not 2 or 3 days before the party.

bitheby · 10/07/2018 13:54

Basically the plot of the film SixtySix when no-one comes to the bar mitzvah.
