To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

I seen England win the World Cup. Getting to the semis is nothing.

Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 00:48

Ok, I'll concede. Perhaps it's subjective, but yes I see me remembering the match on Wed for the rest of my life, as I will the one in 1990. It will be referred to in football for years to come (unless they have a winning streak in the meantime rendering it forgettable!!). But, fuck it either way 'bless' was patronising as fuck and fuck it, I'm excited!!

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 10/07/2018 00:48

Sorry but is this remotely serious?

Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 00:49

'I seen england win the world cup

Couldn't help but smile at this Grin

DramaQueenofHighCs · 10/07/2018 00:52

You know what? 100% honest truth?
I couldn't have cared less about football either way at the start of the World Cup. I had no idea when individual matches were on until my friends told me about them, and I have since taken a passing interest in how well England are doing. I also didn't think badly of football fans or football, I was just totally 'meh' about it all.

However since reading about kids plays and concerts being reschedualled so that many parents cannot attend and even worse, many children cannot take part in them because of other commitments I'mnlw livid and quite frankly hope England lose!
I'm not being 'sneary' it's just that I work hard to teach my DS about honouring commitments even if something else comes up. What lesson are the schools and clubs in question teaching? That it's ok to cancel something you are committed to and worked hard for because you get a better offer. And we wonder why we are starting to get a generation of entitled little darlings! Hmm

Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 00:58

It's one night to support a national team in a hugely popular sport... I think my DD will survive not getting her tea making badge that night, my subs will still be paid. Chill Grin

cherish123 · 10/07/2018 00:59

Why?

cherish123 · 10/07/2018 01:01

Oh - football. YABU. You have option to attend events or not. Unless you are a player, it is not a massive deal.

Noqont · 10/07/2018 01:21

Well my DC's two schools have rearranged the times of the things they are doing to accommodate the football. So now I'm in a position where only one can go to their school activity as it's impossible to sort out drop off and collection otherwise. Bit pissed off that I have to choose between them really.

Noqont · 10/07/2018 01:24

Let me tell you, as an ex A&E sister, any injuries/ health concerns you’ve been storing up, just get yourselves down to your local emergency department when the match starts

Lol. Fair point. Grin

MidniteScribbler · 10/07/2018 04:05

I think it’s a good compromise, as it recognises that you can’t just demand people behave in a respectful way or honour previous commitments when that’s just not the mood of the country.

No, god forbid we would expect people to show some manners and honour their commitments over a sporting match that can be watched by recording it instead.

It reminds me of a couple of years ago, when I ended up driving a young girl to the national finals of her competition, arranging her clothes, doing her hair, was the one ringside cheering her on, because her parents wanted to watch the final of the aussie rules footy on tv (their team wasn't even playing) and refused to go. If you can't put your own child ahead of a sporting match, then there is something seriously fucking wrong with you.

AuntieStella · 10/07/2018 07:34

"'I seen england win the world cup

Why? Because you like to laugh at SPAG mistakes. Or because you don't realise that there are plenty of people around who were alive in 1966? Me, for example.

OwlOfBrown · 10/07/2018 07:35

Is that to me?

If so, I have already clearly stated that I don't mind whether the girls come to Brownies or stay at home and watch the match. It's just that I'm not changing pre-arranged events to cater for other things they might want to do. Sorry if your DD just gets to make tea at Brownies though. That sucks! My girls (the ones that turn up) will be on the lake in Canadian Canoes on Wednesday.

BikeRunSki · 10/07/2018 07:47

What if the child wants to watch the match? DD is a huge football fan! DS has become interested. I’m not interested. I’m not going to deny them the opportunity to watch their national team in the World Cup semi for possibly the only time in their lives!

I’ll be going for a bike ride on the quiet roads!!

sashh · 10/07/2018 07:58

Why, What's happening on Wednesday?

Something to do with men and balls, but not tennis.

meditrina · 10/07/2018 08:02

"Why, What's happening on Wednesday?"

Thread such as this one are quite useful in picking up who doesn't follow current affairs, or read or watch or listen to the news or even just the headlines. There is a level of (self-imposed) isolation from society that is rather concerning.

(Though of course I am rather assuming that the poster is in Britain, where it's serious front page, lead story, headline news)

Nousernameforme · 10/07/2018 08:13

It's a game of football. Which people are using as an excuse to get tanked up and destroy things. Fucking historical moment my arse.

sashh · 10/07/2018 08:13

poster

But it shouldn't be front page news.

A little girl has been murdered in Scotland, a nurse has been arrested for 9 murders of babies, the government is disintegrating, wildlife is suffering with the weather, the NHS is in crisis, Brexit is still a disaster.

All of these should be more important than a game.

sashh · 10/07/2018 08:18

Sorry I meant medtrina

meditrina · 10/07/2018 08:19

Doesn't matter how much one says it shouldn't be.

It is.

Change in societal attention preferences comes between times, not during major practice events themselves. Perhaps it'll be different by 2022, but as that requires shifting the cultural norms of much of the world, I think it might take a little longer.

And utter ignorance of what is headline news is unusual, thank goodness. Which is possibly why I find it so noticeable when people claim it.

EdithWeston · 10/07/2018 08:22

Something to do with men and balls, but not tennis.

That clashes on Saturday

Football Tennis

Tennis Football

(probably, assuming no rain in SW19 as now seems likely, and typical match duration)

GerdaLovesLili · 10/07/2018 08:22

You are aware, I suppose that it's possible to tailor your news intake to cover things like politics, war, religion and poverty, (You know, the important things) whilst blocking all but the most cursory mentions of sport?
Your ignorance of modern digital technology is rather concerning.

jacks11 · 10/07/2018 08:24

well, it's not really a historic event. It's a football match, albeit an important one if you are a English football fan.

Why should it be cancelled though? Not everyone (even in England) likes football. Not every adult or child would be interested in watching that match. Not everyone in the UK is English.

If it means that much to you, then just don't take your children (but let the volunteers of the group if it's brownie's etc).

This is exactly why so many of us are groaning at the thought of England winning the world cup.

postcardsfrom · 10/07/2018 08:28

Hahahahahahaha. No, they shouldn't be cancelled, and kids who want to watch the football should skip the activity. FFS

meditrina · 10/07/2018 08:31

The poster whose comment I quoted was unaware so must be ignorant from all forms of media

I know how to tailor content, but think it is unwise to go too far, such that you miss the most-covered stories in their entirety.

And this is an important point. Not just because one does not know the 'unknown unknowns' and limiting your attention such that you do not even clock the headlines adequately means you might miss things that are important to you. But also because a 'mixed diet' of everything that is happening is rather important in itself, for all sorts of reasons, not least contextualising what you actually are interested in.

The trend of excessive filtering (ie that which means that even main features of main stories are off) is akin to that of no-platforming, and is formative of very narrow, self-reinforcing communities. I don't see that as a good thing at all.
