To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

stellenbosch · 09/07/2018 19:22

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

Though I have to say, the fact that so many businesses and places of work are having to prepare for staff not turning up on Thursday is appalling. Do people have no control of themselves and their drinking? Just because you may be celebrating (or commiserating) does not mean you have to get so drunk that you can't work the next day. Says a lot about society, I think. Makes me despair.

If you've not booked the day off n Thursday then you should be managing your alcohol consumption accordingly, not using the winning of a football match as an excuse to get bladdered.

AmIthatbloodycold · 10/07/2018 08:38

Historic event.

Really?

Kingkiller · 10/07/2018 08:39

The OP and the sneerers are both being unreasonable. There's nothing wrong with liking football or recognising that this is a big match. That doesn't mean you can persuade non-football fans that it's an historic event or that everyone should change their plans for it.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/07/2018 09:17

Whether or not something is interesting isn’t the criteria for whether or not it is historic.

Anyone under the age of 28 wasn’t even alive the last time England made a World Cup semifinal and if you can remember it you’re probably over 35. Things like don’t happen very often and there’s no guarantee that will happen again in their lifetime. In 20, 30 years time there will be parents getting all misty eyed telling their kids what an amazing time they had watching the World Cup in the great summer of 2018.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/07/2018 09:25

It’s all about making memories and the shared, collective consciousness of the nation. The moments that we all experience and live through together are the things that help bind us together.

Amanduh · 10/07/2018 09:36

A lot of the clubs here and many other areas I know have postponed or rearranged after consulting parents. I know it’s not of interest in MN upside down land but it is in real life where everyone I know will be watching it!

BarefootHippieChick · 10/07/2018 09:39

Jellyslice dc school have also brought forward a performance to a ridiculously early time when lots of parents will still be at work, they are honouring the tickets to other nights but one evening had already sold out anyway. Could be the same school. ..

I have heard more parents complaining about it than not.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/07/2018 09:45

It's a game. Who cares.

NataliaOsipova · 10/07/2018 09:46

The voice of reason!

Jorah · 10/07/2018 09:47

Huh? Mine have clubs, they just aren't going as they'd prefer to watch the match.

I am sure some kids will go, so they can look back and remember they were at brownies when England qualified for the world Cup final.

BitchQueen90 · 10/07/2018 09:55

What @kingkiller said.

People who sneer at those who are excited about the football are rude and unreasonable. Equally some football fans need to understand that some people just aren't interested and the world doesn't stop when games are on.

ItsNachoCheese · 10/07/2018 09:57

Life shouldnt grind to a halt for a game of football

Jorah · 10/07/2018 09:58

Pretty much everyone in RL is interested. I think there are literally 20 people in England who are uninterested, ones my dm and the rest are on mumsnet.

I am filing 'disinterest in the football' along with the obsession with RG unis as a peculiarly Mumsnet thing.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 10/07/2018 10:02

I am sure some kids will go, so they can look back and remember they were at brownies when England qualified for the world Cup final.

Really? Hmm

Because I strongly suspect the important memory in that scenario will be made on Sunday when they play in the final, not on Wednesday when they qualified for it.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 10:08

DramaQueenofHighCs

DH and I do follow the football, but I still completely agree with you. It's absolutely ridiculous.

It's the same attitude from people who accept invitations, but don't turn up at the last minute because they had a better offer. It's rude.

If it was the finale, I might be slightly more understanding, but it's not! I will be watching whatever final is on Sunday, but if it means keeping the country quiet, free of violence and anti-social behaviour, I do hope England is not in it.

Fluffyrainbows · 10/07/2018 10:10

@jorah you do realise people who post here are people in real life? And perhaps you know people who are like yourself. There are large numbers of people who do not care or have an interest in the World Cup, or any form of football.
I personally have no issue with people being excited about it or enjoying it, but to assume everyone but 20 people in the country are interested is just ludicrous. For many of us, football is boring, it's a game, with players who are paid far too much money. I would genuinely rather watch paint dry, or go to the supermarket when it's on. And I actually only know a couple of people who are interested.

Jorah · 10/07/2018 10:12

However since reading about kids plays and concerts being reschedualled so that many parents cannot attend and even worse, many children cannot take part in them because of other commitments I'mnlw livid and quite frankly hope England lose! I'm not being 'sneary' it's just that I work hard to teach my DS about honouring commitments even if something else comes up

I suggest you teach your ds to be flexible then, because its an exciting historic event for lots of people. Perhaps 'entitled little darlings ' need to learn that not everyone thinks their play is the absolute be all and end all!

Willow2017 · 10/07/2018 10:13

What nonsense . Nobody in my family gives a flying fig about football. There are far more important things in life for us so we wont be scarred for life if we dont see one game.

This weird idea that everyone in the whole of UK is obsessed with england playing football is extraordinary. Only on mn have i seen this nobody has mentioned it apart from a couple of footie fan friends in rl.

Jorah · 10/07/2018 10:14

What are these "commitments" a these children have? Jesus honestly some of you need to chill the hell out.

Little Dora is not going to fall behind her peers if she misses brownies for a week!!

Jorah · 10/07/2018 10:17

That is actually scary. Do you watch the news? Read a newspaper perhaps? Or is everything filtered in your social media world?

Because I think you'll find in the big wide world the football is being mentioned quite a lot.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/07/2018 10:24

After the antisocial behaviour in Nottingham last weekend, you'd think the council would have learned their lesson. But know. They are giving out 3000 tickets to watch the match at the castle. That's going to be fun when they all leave at the same time. 3000 rowdy fans funnelled into a very small area.

ferrier · 10/07/2018 10:24

Given how many events are being cancelled or rearranged I wouod say that confirms that a lot of English people do actually see the World Cup semi-final as pretty special.
England are in the semi-final. I'm English. Too right I'm going to celebrate this once every 20 years at most event rather than taking my dc swimming.

Elementtree · 10/07/2018 10:26

I thought, after reading the title, that the op meant that all after school activities should be stopped for EVERY Wednesday. Like in ye olde days when shops would shut early on a Wednesday. And I thought that was a really cool idea so that all kids could play out together, one day a week - like a shared rest day.

And now it is confirmed, I think I've gone full hippy. I'll start knitting my own yoghurt.

TheNavigator · 10/07/2018 10:27

Men's football isn't mentioned much in my world and I follow news and current affairs pretty closely. In broadsheets, the sport is confined to one section, which I ignore completely. I was vaguely aware of the football but couldn't have told you the day of the match, because, like many many people, I just. don't. care. Mindblowing, eh?

whoopsiedaisies · 10/07/2018 10:28

Some MN posters are so rude- I think the OP was being lighthearted, and clearly her and her family are looking forwards to watching the footy. Nothing wrong with that!!
