To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

My DS’s school play has been moved and he will miss it now, despite having a large part, as we have a long-booked family event on the day they’ve moved it to. V annoying!

Clue1ess · 09/07/2018 22:50

New year 7 intake open evening clashed with the game.
The Grammer school didn’t feel the need to make any changes.
The secondary modern gave notice today to bring the time forward.

My father owns a scaffolding firm, in which he has decided that all employees get to go home by 5:30pm, to allow them enough time to go to where they are planning to watch the match. I know some of the scaffolders and labourers don’t care that much over football and wasn’t going to watch it, but my father and majority of employees do, so majority rules. My father is also getting ready for Thursday in being short staffed as let’s be honest, we are going to have quite a lot of employees either not turn up, or be late and miss their transport to site in our lorries.

If my dad didn’t arrange for Wednesday to have a shorter day, we would actually see at least 10 employees not turn up Wednesday morning as they want to guarantee they get to watch the match.

For a long time England has been labelled to be one of the weaker teams in the World Cup, and for us to get to the semi finals is so shocking and exciting. For once England is showing promise, and it’s great for the younger generation to get to experience this. I wouldn’t say it’s historical just yet, if we get to the finals then yeah it will certainly be historical in terms of English sporting history.

News Flash! You're the parent - you get to decide whether they are allowed to watch or not.

My Brownie unit will be running on Wednesday evening as usual because that is when it is convenient for me to run it. I don't really care if the girls come to Brownies or stay at home to watch football. They won't earn the badge we're working towards if they don't but that's for individual girls/families to decide. A good life lesson that the world doesn't revolve around individuals and sometimes you have a difficult decision to make. Subs will still be due for that day though.

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 22:59

*I would not have known there was a football match on Wednesday if it were not for this thread.

I live in a football free home.*

Fuck me, do you not converse with the outside world? Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/07/2018 23:01

I am an assistant Cub leader. I
to the leader/Akela that numbers might be quite low this week, that something more important than Cubs was happening, I got very short shrift. Meh. She was warned.

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 23:02

Kids activities? I thought it was on at bedtime?

Doesn't this really depend on individual bedtimes? Hmm

7pm. HTH

WithTwoGiantBoys · 09/07/2018 23:04

Cubs is cancelled this Wednesday, I'm glad as in all likelihood the leaders and volunteers would have missed the match and turned up to just two or three kids. I'd hate for them to give up their time for that!

BlackeyedSusan · 09/07/2018 23:12

I am watching dd perform in a school play on Wednesday... I think I need to get creative with the craft paper and scissors to take a row of paper cut outs with me.

Fluffyears · 09/07/2018 23:20

Historic 😂, there is a semi-final every 4 years (fair enough different teams) ffs!

Good for Aldi? Yeah great when the workers stop being paid at 3pm on Wednesday and still have to put food on the table but with less cash as I bet they aren’t paying for lost hours!

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 23:23

Of course it's historic for England 😂😂😂

And also workers will be paid their contracted houses, sleep easy love Wink

Nurse12345 · 09/07/2018 23:29

yabvu! it's a football game. I feel sorry for people who have got special things planned for weds evening

DontMakeMeShushYou · 09/07/2018 23:34

Of course it's historic for England 😂😂😂

Oh bless!

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 23:39

No need to bless me love, I've got an awesome night out planned with my mates, regardless of the result m, semis!! Bless your life Grin

DontMakeMeShushYou · 09/07/2018 23:49

I wasn't blessing you love! I was expressing my mirth at how young and innocent you sound. Historic event indeed! 1990 isn't history yet!

Rachie1973 · 09/07/2018 23:50

My school has bought the Year 6 performance forward an hour.

Eek.... My DH has upset my SD over this.

Our Grandson has a school play, which they've bought forward an hour too. We were invited (late notice, few extra tickets left). He refused the invite lol. I wasn't privy to the conversation, but he got a lecture about her son being her priority and he should be ours too.

I kind of see both sides. She says she's disappointed she can't watch the game either, but she's not generally a footy fan, isn't interested usually, just this rather interesting tournament. DH and I follow our local team, as season ticket holders, we also bought our grandsons season ticket and he goes with us regularly and we follow the Euros and World Cup however we're performing, good or bad.
We also do a lot of other activities with him

He's not 'our' child. We did prioritise our 6 kids. We did all the plays, sports days, parents evenings etc etc already. Its lovely to be invited but we already have 4 grandchildren and another on the way. We have 6 kids! Imagine being invited to every grandchild event ever! It would be endless!

Then, after all this and it calmed down with lots of sorrys from everyone, the school move it back an hour! We'd never have made it from work anyway! Its an hour away, travelling a hugely busy commuter road at rush hour! I wish they'd moved it earlier lol and saved the hassle!

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 23:54

Aww thank you! Though I'm not found, unfortunately! But of course this will be mentioned in English football for years to come! I didn't say 1990 was historic, I said that making the semis will be a historic event in football, which it of course will be. Do keep track Grin

Willow2017 · 09/07/2018 23:54

Our school is moving an event to an hour earlier. They cannot pretend they would get the same level of attendance if there was a clash so they are being sensible

Our school has also changed the timing of the end of year play from a 7pm start to 5pm and also the football tournament for cubs has been moved to Thursday.

What about the parents who have arranged to get jome in time from work, have arranged childcare for specific times?

As long as the footie fans get things rearranged to suit them then screw everyone else? Good gravy i would be spitting bricks if i had to miss something important my child was doing because adults put a game of football before thier kids.

Rachie1973 · 09/07/2018 23:54

Not Weds. Only if England win on Weds, they'll close at 3 on final day which is a Sunday, so 1 hour lost.

Sharkwithknees · 09/07/2018 23:55

*young

MuddlingMackem · 09/07/2018 23:55

YABU to think they should all be cancelled, but the ones run by people who want to watch the match probably should be. Grin

DD's Guides is on early this week as it's a coffee evening, so I'll have to stay and I'll miss the first 15 minutes or so. If it was usual time it'd be late enough to send DH to drop her off and pick her up whilst I stayed in.

Rachie1973 · 09/07/2018 23:55

Could be that some of the teachers want to watch as well.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 10/07/2018 00:01

I said that making the semis will be a historic event in football

Yeah! Except it isn't. A historic event usually refers to something that's either never happened before, or which last happened so long ago it was before most people's living memory. But we got to the World Cup semis a mere 28 years ago. So historic it ain't. The word you are looking for is unusual. It is unusual for England to get to the semis.

Grin
Sharkwithknees · 10/07/2018 00:11

No, it will be mentioned for years to come. Therefore, historic (in English football terms, as I've reiterated several times). Are you scottish, per chance?? Wink

DontMakeMeShushYou · 10/07/2018 00:29

Really? 1966 was a historic moment which has been talked about ever since. I've never really noticed that England reaching the semis in 1990 is considered a particularly historic event that everyone has talked about for years so I'm not sure why reaching them in 2018 would be. I can't quite decide whether it is sweet to think like that or just pessimistic.

No, I'm English.
