To think all children activities should be cancelled on Wednesday?!

I'm hoping so! They should cancel or at least rearrange Brownies/martial arts/gym/swimming, etc!

Either that or lots of parents having to nip out at half time!

It's a historic event, kids should be allowed to watch!

Genuinely didn’t know that there was a football match on Wednesday before reading this thread.

I’m not going to be watching it and I doubt any of my 4 DCs

  1. know it’s on
  2. if they did, they wouldn’t miss one of their hobbies to watch it

I’d trust the organisers to cancel if they had insufficient numbers, but wouldn’t want them to cancel otherwise.

arghhhhhhh · 10/07/2018 11:48

@CheshireChat - noise and anti social behaviour - LOL!! People having fun and being proud of their country for a few weeks. Get a grip

arghhhhhhh · 10/07/2018 11:48

@Bobbydeniro69 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 spot on

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 11:49

Oh and by the way, you sound really , really silly saying the World Cup is just about football and football fans.

no, just being realistic. Your whole post is complete nonsense, you might wish it's true, but it does absolutely nothing about racism or national pride.

ggirl · 10/07/2018 12:05

I don't think activities should be cancelled on Wednesday ,people can make their own choices but the vehement anti football response and snobby attitude against football just shows the worst of Mumsnets narrow minded posters. All those worthy types who cast the whole football world with the hooligan tag.

I totally agree with @Bobbydeniro69

TellMeItsNotTrue · 10/07/2018 12:09

I think that schools have been put in a difficult position because if they went ahead as planned then they may find a lot of the kids aren't there, which is not fair on those who are and could mean it's impossible to go ahead (if it's a play type performance rather than a choir type) anyway

They have three choices and none of them would be ideal -

  1. Go ahead as planned, knowing that there will probably be a lot of children missing and could possibly end up cancelled anyway
  2. Bring it forward, but then there will be family members who can't get there at the earlier time
  3. Change the day, but then there are family members who have taken the time off to be there and won't be able to make the new day, and possibly children who have other commitments on the new day so will pull out

It's easier for clubs that are just for the children (no audience) and not dependant on everyone being there (like a play) but whether it's cancelled or goes ahead there will be some who aren't happy with the decision

ggirl · 10/07/2018 12:11

I'm not an ardent football fan but am able to understand the excitement of it all.

DramaQueenofHighCs · 10/07/2018 12:35

Jorah It's the semi final! These kids have worked hard for their concert or play or whatever. What effort have the kids who want to watch the football put in to helping England win or not? None
So yes the concerts are more important because those children have put in hours and hours of hard work and now have it spoiled because some people want to sit and watch television which requires no effort whatsoever!
Now if the children and adults in question were actually playing in the World Cup that would be different but they are not.

LadyPenelope68 · 10/07/2018 12:36

Historic event? It’s a bloody football match - if you don’t want to attend, don’t go, simple.

Jorah · 10/07/2018 12:39

great post bobbydeniro and every word true

Jorah · 10/07/2018 12:40

absolute LOLZ I'm afraid!

QueenofmyPrinces · 10/07/2018 12:45

I wouldn’t expect things to be rearranged but I certainly wouldn’t be taking my child anywhere that clashed with the semi final or final.

My husband is going to the pub to watch the footabll. We have two children whose bedtimes are 7/7.30 so I’m thinking of asking my mom to come over and put them to bed for me so I can watch it uninterrupted Grin

DramaQueenofHighCs · 10/07/2018 12:50

Jorah: "absolute LOLZ I'm afraid"

Yes you can't reply to that intelligently can you. Sometimes the truth hurts! I have nothing against people wanting to enjoy football. If they chose not to go to clubs etc I say "go for it" as it's their choice. What I'm arguing is for actual performances. The parents should make sure their kids are there too. It's an important life lesson.
A club where you are just doing what you always do? Go ahead and miss it and watch tv, I've done the same myself. Concerts and play performances are different though.

All the football haters in this thread, I hope you smile politely and be accepting the next time something you are really interested in gets sneered at and belittled by people that you know. (sorry can't remember who says this, it wasn't Jorah but I'm bot looking upthread again)

Believe me, with the hobbies I have I get that a lot! I do smile, I realise everyone has different tastes and not everyone can like the same thing.

Arrowfanatic · 10/07/2018 13:03

It's just football for gods sake. Yes it's fun for those who like it, yes it's amazing that England has got as far as they have, will the world stop spinning for 90 minutes on Wednesday...no.

Alas football or not life will and should continue.

I give up my free time to run a club, whether I hold that club or not I still have to pay all the associated bills. Is it annoying with families who have committed to my club not bother turning up..sure. But I understand why. However our family will continue with life as normal on Wednesday.

RoseWhiteTips · 10/07/2018 13:12

Fgs. Why?

CheshireChat · 10/07/2018 14:02

arghhhhhhh have you seen the news? The emergency response vehicle destroyed, bus stops destroyed etc and the general aggression fueled by lots and lots of alcohol? It's not the people that have a barbecue and shout at the TV that are the issue here.

And of course other hobbies are mocked, try having any remotely geeky hobbies and you'll hear all sorts.

And you don't see anyone trying to cancel classes for Wimbledon or similar so let's not pretend football fans have it all so hard.

Jorah · 10/07/2018 15:08

Wimbledon happens every year and is fucking boring

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 15:34

Wimbledon happens every year and is fucking boring

no one is denying your right to have an opinion, but Wimbledon is a few weeks long. Football season happens every year and last a lot longer.

Why do some football fans believe that football is superior to anything else and should trump any other event? You are giving a bad name to the rest of us.

tiggyt · 10/07/2018 15:37

Can’t really compare a sporting event that happens every year, to one that happens every four years.

‘Oh I didn’t even realise there was even a match tomorrow’, so you’re telling me that you haven’t watched the news, read the news, gone on social media etc? Either you live in a hole or just blatantly lying.

Yeah it sucks that school concerts and plays are being moved forward and changed, but it’s been changed for a reason, as quite frankly, a fuck load of people would rather watch the semi final and not a children’s play that makes you want to gauge your eyes out.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/07/2018 15:40

I’m not a particular football fan (cricket for me) but I can see that England reaching the semis on the World Cup is huge, and I’m enjoying it.

As are many thousands of non football fans.

Have no idea why you are refusing to see that Ctrl, it’s different to the normal football season.

NerrSnerr · 10/07/2018 15:43

I hate the whole thing on mumsnet where people are not interested in stuff so sneer at those who are. I think there's some snobbery there isn't there?

This semi final is a big deal to lots of people- if it's not a big deal for you then fine, don't watch it but I don't see why anyone should look down on people who do want to.

I'm not interested in tennis but don't look down on those who are- why would I? If someone gets pleasure from watching it then that's brilliant.

As for those who are happy their kids don't like football? Why? That's just utterly bonkers, let them like what they want to like and be happy for them.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 10/07/2018 15:48

It’s definitely a bit of snobbery / classism for some people.

I don’t like it myself. But I don’t care who else does.

I think the worst behaved england football fans are pretty revolting though. They’re a minority, but I think they’ve managed to give English football a bad name.

And tennis is an elitist sport traditionally, so in a classist society, which arguably we are, it is unlikely that fans of tennis will be sneered at or looked down on 🤷‍♀️.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 10/07/2018 15:51

it is unlikely that fans of tennis will be sneered at or looked down on

apparently they are a bunch of boring kill-joy idiots according to some posters, I don't know if it's reverse snobbery or stupidity, but it's definitively there.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 10/07/2018 15:52

The world cup is literally just football Confused

Not particularly fussed about it but i get why there is excitement

The bookclub i go to has been rearranged...which surprised me

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 10/07/2018 15:57

I don't know if it's reverse snobbery or stupidity, but it's definitively there.

Yeah, I think that’s just retaliatory; “you said I’m X? Oh yeah? Well you’re Y & Z then”. You know, the sort of thing most people leave behind at primary school.
