To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Never thought about the national anthem/Union Jack. Very good point. That about sums up what’s so irritating.

In response to points raised further upthread, let’s not forget that 45% of Scots wanted to leave the UK and that was in the face of very biased media coverage. Also, I think I’m correct in saying it was the over 65s who swung the vote in favour of remaining and Scotland voted to stay in Europe.

beautifulblue · 09/07/2018 00:04

I often hear 'proud scot' 'proud Irishmen' ''proud welshman' & that's cool, good for you! But god forbid you're a proud English man, it just stinks of arrogance 😂🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m in the US and there’s a general excitement that England might win here. Or just everyone is being uncharacteristicaly polite to this expat right now!

DiegoMadonna · 09/07/2018 00:07

from almost every other country

I think that's an exaggeration. There is some rivalry between certain countries such as Ireland/Wales/Scotland/France, but most of the rest don't have strong feelings about England one way or the other in my experience.

HateIsNotGood · 09/07/2018 00:08

Just a thought - so as some think the English today have to be 'ashamed' of their 'colonial past' because apparently Engerlund was the only country that colonized places ever - what on earth else were those pesky Hollanders, Spaniards, French and Portugese in their 'Travels'.

Any slave-trader was obviously only English - no Welsh, Scot or Irish ever took part in the slave trade, ever.

Bad things have been done in the past by many - we shouldn't live in shame because of it. No one should. Just be aware that it shouldn't happen again.

WHY DO YOU CARE!
Over the past few days all I've seen on social media and here is English people asking why other people are not supporting them, then this why don't you like us!
Because we are not bloody English!
If Scotland got through to the quarter finals we would give a toss who else were supporting us, but that won't happen because we are shite at football and we know we are thats why we are loved all over they world!
And if you don't like us we couldn't give a f###!

SalemBlackCat · 09/07/2018 00:09

I will say though that I have often felt England was very backward. Their tv shows show either really really old houses close together/on top of each other, or sprawling green land - no modern cities or buildings, and almost always with no sun out. And the words that people use even on here ('fancy' instead of liking someone or having the hots for someone drives me up the wall like nails on a chalkboard, as does feeling 'poorly' - I always think wtf in my head when I read that) I even saw someone on here write jolly - I thought were terms that went out of style in the 1800s. So I guess I've always seen England as quite backward and old-fashioned and even the terminology used by everyone on here backs that impression up. But I do not even dislike let alone hate England, and I never really care if they beat us at cricket or whatever. I don't really care about any of that. I guess I'd say I'm ambivalent when it comes to England just the way they talk has me irritated.

Slanetylor · 09/07/2018 00:09

I suppose if you say Proud Englishman it means you’re proud of England’s history. Which is unfortunately not a good thing.

ferrier · 09/07/2018 00:10

I would agree with Diego. In general the English are well received abroad, even in Europe despite Brexit, and certainly in the US, Australia, Japan, India etc. It's really just the home nations and particularly Scotland that have such high levels of anti-English sentiment.

I'm very proud of our history.

Pumpkinsarepurple · 09/07/2018 00:10

All those lovely castles that you can visit in Wales .... built by the English Lords to suppress, control and subjugate the people whose country they had invaded.

Flooding large valleys in Wales to supply English cities with water - don't think this is from the past, a union official was calling for this to be restarted just a few weeks ago to supply the South East with water.

Like I said on the other thread, would Liverpool cheer for Everton if they were knocked out of the FA Cup, Sunderland for Newcastle or Cardiff for Swansea, so why should the Welsh automatically cheer for the English?

sunshinethroughmywindow · 09/07/2018 00:10

I’m Irish, my husband is Dutch and we live in England. It really surprises us that there is such a general dislike of the England football team. We always support England when our teams aren’t playing. England fans support Scotland , Wales, Ireland And N Ireland in major tournaments as a matter of course and it often doesn’t seem to be reciprocated.

It’s disingenuous to talk about colonialism in the 21st century- there are so many world cup football teams that have shameful periods in their less distant pasts.
Let’s celebrate an England team that hasn’t been arrogant about it’s prospects, with a manager who is gracious and measured, and let England fans get as excited as every other nation in the world does with achieving a semi-final place.

MakeItStopNeville · 09/07/2018 00:11

Ironically, I’ve also spent a lot of time in deepest darkest Trump country and they’re still behind England, despite the coming protests about a democratically elected President visiting the UK.

DiegoMadonna · 09/07/2018 00:12

despite the coming protests about a democratically elected President visiting the UK

You say that as if it's wrong to protest against someone just because they're democratically elected.

MarthaArthur · 09/07/2018 00:12

I am very proud of many aspects of Englands history. Edward Jenners smallpox vaccine for example. Silmy thing to say. Every country in the world has dark areas of history.

Cutietips · 09/07/2018 00:13

Re: Brexit, do you hate the Welsh, who also voted for Brexit? Do you not hate Londoners who didn’t vote for Brexit? And what about people from Cornwall who voted in greater numbers for Brexit in spite of benefiting from EU funds. I really know hardly anyone who voted for Brexit.

The Iraq war was hated by many people and was based on false information, as we all know now. I wish we didn’t get so involved in other countries’ affairs but it doesn’t help that we are overly close to the US and tend to support their overseas wars.

I don’t identify with football hooligans even though I’m a football fan. I don’t understand why a minority of English fans become destructive when drunk. I don’t feel like I’m better than other people in the world, except perhaps Isis state, in which case, yes I do.

But I do think generally saying you hate a whole nation just perpetuates things and gives encouragement and justification to the arseholes.

howfaralong · 09/07/2018 00:14

All the countries who hate us are happy to take the 'silver shilling' in hand outs from England.

One thing is true about England though - does churn out some top notch comedians

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

MakeItStopNeville · 09/07/2018 00:14

If I could 👍🏼 Sunshine’s post, I would!

beautifulblue · 09/07/2018 00:14

Ffs, give me a break. 🙄

OP posts:
Majorintrovert · 09/07/2018 00:15

Honestly? I hope we loose.
Im so sick of all these hooligans being able to pass off this behaviour of the excitement of "it's coming home"
You can watch football without having to cause trouble.

These people on top of ambulances, buses are out to cause trouble.

Slanetylor · 09/07/2018 00:16

But it’s not s slimy thing to say. When English people say they’re proud of England’s history I suppose it means they’re proud of the destruction they caused in Ireland for hundreds of years. The death, the poverty, the squashing of our rights etc etc. you can choose to be proud of it, but it’s a bit of a kick in the teeth really I suppose.

TheGreatCornholio · 09/07/2018 00:16

I'm surprised it took 9 pages for the scrounger comments to start getting thrown about...
