To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

All the Angry People... Where do They All Come From?

MakeItStopNeville · 09/07/2018 00:17

Diego I was mainly commenting on the irony that they’re supporting England FC despite the fact some of the English are protesting a visit by the US President they elected.

beautifulblue · 09/07/2018 00:18

So with that logic every country in the world (practically) should be ashamed because we've all done some shady shit at some point or another! But na.. forget anyone else just England should ashamed! 🙄

It's a bit ironic to say "I don't want England to win because they're sooo mean because they never want any other home nation to win" 🧐 I don't think this is true BTW, when Wales made the Euro semis there was huge support from English people.

I also wonder how long people are going to be cross about something that happened before anyone currently on this planet was even born, and expecting people who had nothing to do with it to be making apologies.

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/07/2018 00:19

Their tv shows show either really really old houses close together/on top of each other, or sprawling green land - no modern cities or buildings, and almost always with no sun out

Are you for real!!!!

We are 65million people squeezed onto a tiny island with towns older than some countries.
And a lot of countryside
Are you expecting acres of bushland or prairie?

People live in flats and terraced houses.

Oh and we can't conjure up the sun. We are in the north

RainbowsAndSmiles · 09/07/2018 00:20

Im so sick of all these hooligans being able to pass off this behaviour of the excitement of "it's coming home" You can watch football without having to cause trouble.

Yes, I completely agree. I'm not even a football fan, but I'm aware enough to know that it's not everyone, but it's only the fuckwits who ever get highlighted in the media.
Football doesn't mean trouble for a lot of people.

chrisinthesun · 09/07/2018 00:20

@beautifulblue

I often hear 'proud scot' 'proud Irishmen' ''proud welshman' & that's cool, good for you! But god forbid you're a proud English man, it just stinks of arrogance 😂🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

THIS ^ in spades.

The Welsh, the Scottish, the Irish, and every other fucking nation can fly their flag high, and be proud of who they are, and it's COOL!.. But God forbid you are 'proud to be English!' That's not allowed!!! Hmm

I AM proud to be English, and I AM flying my flag for the England team right now, and I WILL be leaving it up. I will no longer be told I am a fucking nationalist or a racist for flying it. Don't like my England flag? Don't look at it then!

People who hate us are jealous through and through, and I don't CARE how 'arrogant' that sounds. I don't give a fuck actually.

I am proud to be English.

So shoot me!

Anyone who says 'I want anyone to win but England' is a pathetic loser who is bitter and jealous.

And I agree with @sunshine England are in the semi finals because they are a fucking AMAZING team, with a great Manager.

I have never felt so proud to be English as I am right now.

Fuck the haters. Jealous bastards.

Coyoacan · 09/07/2018 00:20

Actually - on another MN thread about football today, a poster asked me why I wasn't ashamed of the Japanese flag because of exactly that

I worked with a lovely man who was an English squaddie out in the far East during the Second World War. He told me that the British did things that were every bit as bad as the Japanese during the war.

OP, you think the colonial era finished over a hundred years? Your nuts. What do you think the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been about? Liberating women?

And I personally don't hate the English, except the odd that comes over all chauvinist.

HateIsNotGood · 09/07/2018 00:21

So Stop - do you think all the people proposing to protest against Trump in the streets of London are English? Maybe you haven't been to England's capital for a few decades.

SalemBlackCat · 09/07/2018 00:21

I don't see why England shouldn't be a proud nation. Yes they've done dubious things in the past, but so has every nation. I can't think of a nation that is perfect. Like someone said regarding the smallpox vaccine, England has churned out some of the world's greatest people and inventions. So, be proud, English people!

YoYotheclown · 09/07/2018 00:21

I love England ( immigrant ). But I too have noticed lots of negativity.
But not when collecting their benefits 😆
Colonial past or not. England has more then made up for it now.
Please visit another European country and see what sort of welcome you would receive as an immigrant.

Nothing wrong with being a proud Englishman.

howfaralong · 09/07/2018 00:21

What about England are you particularly proud of Chris?

RavenWings · 09/07/2018 00:22

That was because we were the best on the planet.

😂😂😂
A great example of why people don't cheer for England!

Crankywitch · 09/07/2018 00:23

I don't like England. I dislike their history and I dislike their politics. I dislike the way they boast in a very colonial /overlord way. England and America are very similar. There are of course great individuals in both countries but as a nation they are quite unlikeable

Hamiltoes · 09/07/2018 00:23

I don't think there are many people who are genuinely angry, I just think when someone asks "why does everyone hate England" it's like someone presenting you with a massive pizza when you're hungover. Too tempting not to crack on with really Grin

I'll reiterate what I said in my first post though, I've never met an English person I didn't like and have absolutely no hatrid of English people. But when abroad and people say British? English? I will always correct them. I think those saying there is no dislike in typical holiday resort desinations in other countries would feel differently if they pretended they were Scottish or Irish and then conversed with bar owners in Spain, Greece, Turkey etc as a Scottish person.....

SalemBlackCat · 09/07/2018 00:24

Oliversmumsarmy Yes, I am for real. It is simply what I've noticed, that's all. Even other countries bulldoze the really old buildings and builder newer ones. I thought London was supposed to be a great big city but I guess it is just that the tv shows only show the run down parts of London. I don't know.

HateIsNotGood · 09/07/2018 00:27

And Stop do you think every American voted for Trump and every UK voted to Leave in Brexit? Generalizations about 'people', a mass of individuals are merely emotive and hardly descriptive.

I luvs our Football Team, in a couple of weeks, I'll just be luvving my family, neighbours and anyone that needs my love.

RavenWings · 09/07/2018 00:27

I agree with that Hamiltoes, I always find I get a better reception when I make it clear I'm Irish.

I don't think people genuinely hate England, it's just a bit of a national pastime to cheer for any opposing team. If the state can oppress a country for hundreds of years and collude in the cover-up of terrorist attacks (thinking Dublin Monaghan bombings), I think it can cope with a bit of ribbing.

Slanetylor · 09/07/2018 00:28

Every country has a shady past and done nasty things. And I wouldn’t expect any country that Ireland invaded and destroyed to cheer for us.

Auntieaunt · 09/07/2018 00:28

As an English woman I am ashamed for 90% ashamed for our British (many english) history of rape, murder and taking of countries.

I wish people realised that Wales, England and Scotland was just a political border - the only difference between us is a deep historical policial border - we're the same bit of land.

The whole time I'm backing any European team to win but of course I'm hoping it would be England.

I'm sure if England was in the final of USA, France or Russia the other neighbouring counties would be backing us too.

RainbowsAndSmiles · 09/07/2018 00:29

Please visit another European country and see what sort of welcome you would receive as an immigrant

That's true - anyone welcome here, but plenty of news articles about other European countries (naming no names) refusing entry to immigrants coming across from Europe from Africa in the hope of "stemming the tide" or whatever and making them turn back to "their own country"

sailorcherries · 09/07/2018 00:30

I'm not supporting England because of the fans, I'm certainly not jealous Confused I never expected Scotland to qualify Hmm

thefairyfellersmasterstroke · 09/07/2018 00:32

All the countries who hate us are happy to take the 'silver shilling' in hand outs from England.

I can't work out what this means. What is the "silver shilling" and who does England hand it out to?

Redyoyo · 09/07/2018 00:32

What exactly are the people who don't want England to win jealous of? Surely if your teams not there you'd want every team to lose then if you were jealous not just England!

MI5sTopSpy · 09/07/2018 00:32

The little-known and even less-sung sixth verse of God Save the Queen implores God to come to the aid of Marshal George Wade, who was sent to quell rebellious Scottish highlanders in the wake of the Jacobite rising of 1715. It says: "May he sedition hush, And like a torrent rush, Rebellious Scots to crush."
