To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Also, millions of English people voted against Brexit. They have to suck it up too.

bogglepop · 09/07/2018 15:52

Why has England never had its own indy referendum? We need Sturgeon on the case for us.

famousfour · 09/07/2018 15:54

I am not a English but have lived here a long time. I would like England to win but at the same time find the prospect of the gloating, yobbishness and brash coverage wearisome. But I have a stern word with myself that that shouldn't stop me supporting the team. Still. It's off putting.

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 15:54

Sigh...

The expression “baited breath” is nonsense. It’s bated breath.

Grrrrr

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 15:54

Belgium are going to win. Fabulous team.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 15:55

Think the French will break the Belgians myself

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 15:56

Iced Precisely! Still interested to know what country, see what the word 'invaded' is being use to describe!

imwideawake · 09/07/2018 15:56

it's the ignorance of English people on what their country has done to others which makes it even worse.

confuddle, does that mean that your dislike also extends to German people?

India treats some of their citizens (lower caste) appealingly. Does your dislike extend to them?

How about Chinese people? Pumping tons of gasses into the hemisphere. Killing animals for their 'medicinal' properties.

Japanese - Whaling anyone?

I'm with the OP. Why all the vitriol for the English. Spread the hate.
No country is perfect.
Most countries have either done things in the past, or are still doing things, that are questionable.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 15:57

Also, millions of English people voted against Brexit. They have to suck it up too. Yes, or the millions more who voted to leave will have to.

So.. erm... you know... democracy!

imwideawake · 09/07/2018 15:57

appallingly

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 15:57

I have a soft spot for France too. Win win!

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:59

I secretly hope Belgium beat France. My BIL said he was supporting Sweden, so balls to him!

bogglepop · 09/07/2018 15:59

If England win a game, they and their fans are accused of gloating and being unbearable.
Do we say this about other nationalities?
Shall we just all remain mute when our home team does well? It's summer, people are in a good mood, theres a few idiots, of course there are. No matter how we celebrate (idiots aside), it will always be frowned upon.

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 16:00

I have yet another soft spot for Lula Modric.
Decisions, decisions.☺️

RoseWhiteTips · 09/07/2018 16:00

LUKA. I typed LUKA.

Grrrrrrrr

yogaginrepeat · 09/07/2018 16:02

Come live in Ireland where the population lost their homes, their land, their language to England's fondness of colonisation. Add to not giving a fuck as millions starved to death during the famine, and the troubles, and you might get an idea why some countries are not too fond of England.....

everythingsgoingtobealright · 09/07/2018 16:04

bogglepop you seem very worked up over this.

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 16:05

I'm guessing it's Ireland. And while it's true that Britain (not 'England's') history in that country is shameful, it's an odd kind of 'invasion' when the 'invading' power has formally said it is only there with the consent of the province's inhabitants and will leave once that consent no longer exists.

TBH I'd say most English people would happily be shot of NI.

How would you like it if the English 'hated'' the Irish because of the many atrocities the IRA have performed?
Glass Houses.

You seem overly invested in the past.
It's not good.

bogglepop · 09/07/2018 16:11

everythingsgoingtobealright aren't a lot of people on this thread?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 16:12

And 'millions' did not starve to death. The real numbers are terrible enough without all the hyperbole!

Dulra · 09/07/2018 16:14

You seem overly invested in the past.
It's not good.

Trouble is it is not our past it is still very much our present

everythingsgoingtobealright · 09/07/2018 16:16

bogglepop you have commented different things within such a short space of time, which all seem to be mini rants.

everythingsgoingtobealright · 09/07/2018 16:21

How would you like it if the English 'hated'' the Irish because of the many* atrocities the IRA have performed?
Glass Houses.*

Many people do...
The IRA did cause many atrocities, would they have had to if England hadn't tried to take over their land?

yogaginrepeat · 09/07/2018 16:21

Exactly @Dulra - we're still very much living with the ramifications.

Think some should look into why the IRA was even created to begin with....wouldn't have existed without what was done to Ireland over centuries.
