To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Yes.

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 15:10

On James Corden - I'd say almost certainly
Or Russell Brand for that matter

Lweji · 09/07/2018 15:10

So, OP, you still carry that chip on your shoulder, then?

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:12

I feel it's acceptable to be openly xenophobic towards the English and nobody should be cheering that on.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 15:13

And Piers?

See? That's why other countries hate England. You send them these people. Grin

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/07/2018 15:15

Nobody should be cheering on anti foreigner sentiment/xenophobia in some English papers but people still happy to buy them.

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 15:15

Unfortunately Piers came back!

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 15:15

I’ll say one thing if Boris becomes the next PM you won’t need to bother with Scotland hating the English cos anyone with any sense will move up here and vote for independence!

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 15:15

I think everything that could have been said about SAHMs vs working mums has been said.

Not quite, she's failed to insinuate that I married a rich man because I dropped out of school.

But to be clear, I don't think it should be "vs" at all. I think that all women should be supportive of other women's valid choices and that misogyny should be challenged no matter where it comes from.

I don't know what Delta thinks. Perhaps that I'm busy sweeping the floor in a bandana and pinafore, wistfully dreaming of the time DH gets home and I get to make him dinner.

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 15:16

I actually kind of like Russel Brand Grin Haven't seen hardly anything of him to be fair, but from what I have he seems great.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:17

There were a fair few people here who were pleased when Portugal/Cristiano Ronaldo got knocked out, mainly because their fans are quite disruptive. They always violate the 'one hour of car horn klaxonning after the game' and it pisses folk off. I wasn't particularly bothered myself.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:19

@GhostofFrankGrimes

Totally agree with your point there too.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 15:20

I don't think that's the actual reason. Wink

chrisinthesun · 09/07/2018 15:21

@ElBurroSinNombre

Yeah OK I will stop now .. it has been a laugh though seeing @DeltaG make herself look more stupid with every post.

And DeltaG is more than happy to change the subject away from SAHMs because she has made a fool of herself assuming I am one,

When I have never ever said I am.

She must feel daft. And she can't come back from it. So she will be happy to change the subject now.

I am happy to have made DeltaG look ridiculous. (Though she didn't really need any help judging by the nasty misogynistic dismissive comments she made about SAHMs calling them' little wifeys' and trying to ridicule them.!)

When you scratch the surface DeltaG is pretty vile.

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 15:23

@roses

I will say that from a neutral perspective it would seem that both sides were adding fuel to the fire. But seriously can we leave it. It is both pointless and futile having extended arguments with people that you don't know on the internet. I'm sure if you met you wouldn't say the same things to each other that you have said on here. Who knows, you may even like each other!

I quite like some of Brand's latest incarnation TBH but he's just not funny. Generally celebrity West Ham fans should be avoided IMO

I think I've only ever seen him on the Big Fat Quiz of the Year.

He was hilarious Grin Especially with Noel Fielding. He seems a very intelligent guy too, somehow.

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 15:26

Who knows, you may even like each other!

That's taking it a bit far Grin

But she did catch me at a very bad time to be making misogynistic statements about SAHM, I've got some stuff going on in real life. So maybe I was a bit inflammatory.

imwideawake · 09/07/2018 15:33

I love the English and England.

Some reasons I love the English.
I have lived in a fair few countries (am not British myself but currently living in Britain)
They are the most compassionate out of all the nationalities towards animals.
See all those skinny feral dogs and cats wandering around on the streets at your holiday destination? You won't find the English treating their animals like that.
If there's a crisis of some sort, somewhere in the world, be it a natural disaster or someone needs rescuing, the English will bend over backwards to help.
English, on the whole, care about the environment. They at least try to do something about it.
The countryside is beautiful. and, hot weather aside, usually very green and beautiful.
Sense of humor is second to none.

I love living here.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:36

The thing with fools @chrisinthesun, it that it takes one to know one.

Now will you give it a rest, we aren't going to agree, so let's not continue flogging a dead horse and de-railing the thread any further.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:39

@imwideawake

That's a very nice post, thanks for your kind words!

confuddledconfuddle · 09/07/2018 15:40

Maybe because England is still invading my country and has now voted for Brexit which is going to totally fuck us over even more Angry

Although in fairness it's probably the only time ever I haven't been anyone but England. I'm enjoying this English team.

But you gotta understand that it isn't all history - it's the ignorance of English people on what their country has done to others which makes it even worse. The world doesn't revolve around England.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 15:44

I think compassion towards animals crosses national boundaries though. A small anecdote on this; my German and Venezuelan friends have just gone to considerable effort and expense bringing a stray cat that they found on an Italian beach, back to their home in France! Lucky little moggy.

bogglepop · 09/07/2018 15:44

It's so sad to see so many angry Anglophobes on twitter/fb.
Mostly Scots it appears. Nothing new there, but the mindset/attitudes of some of these people is pretty scary now they are getting even more worked up about England doing well in the WC.
Reading some of the threads, it is clear they are pretty much radicalised in the same way you read about religious extremists.
You ask why they are flying a Croatian flag, and their reply is that they aren't English, so why should they be forced to support England? It's a real juxtaposition isn't it?! Why not be neutral in that case? Nobody is holding them over a barrel to support England.
The sensitivity over seeing any commentary about England and their progression in this WC is a new depth of bitterness. Of course it's all over the media, it happens once every 4 years and it's a rarity for them to get this far. I even saw one comment complaining about seeing happy English people celebrating. Really?!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 15:45

it's the ignorance of English people on what their country has done to others which makes it even worse Oh puhlease!

You can re-write world history if you choose to, you can pretend that no other country ever invaded anywhere, just us evil British, sorry, English, you can even pretend that we are currently actively invading your country... but it will all be sophistry!

Tell us where you live... I can guarantee we can find some skulduggery it got up to in its history, cos, man, that stuff goes on forever!

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 15:48

Maybe because England is still invading my country

Invasion is a war crime. I suggest you contact the UN.

BTW 'England' is not a soverign state and has no armed forces with which to 'invade' any other soverign state.
