To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

*to prove your point, rather.

Clearly I need a cup of tea Grin

SnapFart · 09/07/2018 13:37

Why should Wales/Ireland/Scotland support you? You very rarely even acknowledge that we are part of the United Kingdon!

Personally I am supporting England (I'm Welsh).

In the rugby I find a lot of my english 'pals' are awful gloaters when they win.

theymademejoin · 09/07/2018 13:37

All these people from other countries living in the UK, enjoying its peace, safety, justice and welfare yet bitching and trashing its citizens

Tell that to the Catholic priest who, while chatting to parishioners after mass, was spat at and verbally abused by members of the Orange parade that was allowed to march past the church, despite it being known to be inflammatory.

That happened yesterday in Scotland, so nothing to do with the English, but it is the UK.

QuizzlyBear · 09/07/2018 13:39

I'm English and other than the fact that it would make my DH happy, I don't particularly want England to win. Not because of the players but because of the loutish behaviour of the fans. They're an international embarrassment.

Trashing pubs, trashing furniture stores, trashing beer gardens, fighting in the streets, a huge upturn in domestic violence and now trashing an ambulance which was only there to help them. Twats.

Contrast that against the Japanese players, who bowed to their fans on the pitch and cleaned up their own locker rooms and the Senegalese fans, who cleaned the stands after their celebrations. That's basic respect, that I'll root for.

Oblomov18 · 09/07/2018 13:43

The Japanese team, fans, their dressing room and general respect was lovely. Ds2 wanted them to win!

schnubbins · 09/07/2018 13:44

I'm Irish married to a German.Believe you me there is still a lot of animosity against Germans and Germany all over the world.Many still think its funny to bring up the war and Hitler when my husband is introduced as being german.He speaks english with an Irish accent so it is not immediately obvious. Sick to the back teeth of it .In the last World Cup when Germany won 7-1 against Brazil We got quite a lot of abuse from brazilian 'friends' we were connected with on Facebook.It was quite unbelievable.As an Irish woman I will be cheering for England as I have had so many such lovely English friends in my lifetime and know they have had nothing to do with what happened in Ireland in colonial times ,just as my husband or my children have no responsibility for the atrocities committed by Germany in the second WW.They as germans are very much aware of the legacy left to them and it is only since the World Cup was held in Germany in 2006 that the German people feel comfortable enough to fly their flag.

Confused think it's a bit ridiculous to presume that people in the UK don't support Wales, Ireland and Scotland in the world or any other competition, and think that England shouldn't win the world cup because of the few idiot fans that turn into hudlums.

Me, OH and everyone else we know that's into sport always want Wales, Ireland, Scotland to do well. We watched all the games and were gutted when they didn't qualify. It'd have made it more exciting to watch the world cup with more teams to support.

Its also shit to say you don't want England to win the world cup coz of the idiots you see in the paper. What about the rest of the country that behave like decent human beings, that like to sit at home and watch the game with a few drinks and snacks. You'd like to spite them because of other idiots? Thats a bit miserable isn't it.

MustBeThin · 09/07/2018 13:47

*people in England Blush

QuizzlyBear · 09/07/2018 13:51

BTW, I thought it was fairly accepted that ancient China invented football? 'It's coming home' my arse.

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 13:55

I’ve seen the worlds oldest football - found in Stirling Castle in Scotland Grin do you want your ball back??

Mammalamb · 09/07/2018 13:57

I’m in Scotland. Nearly half of my friends are either English or have an English parent. (DFIL included). Most people don’t hate the English, but still don’t want them to win the World Cup. Mostly it’s light hearted banter; you know the way the English hate the French. But, a lot of it is because it is nearly 50 years ago since England last won the World Cup, and it’s still going on about in the media. The British media is very England centric, and it annoys a lot of people.

Another point is that there is a problem with some of the English football fans ; terrible loutish behavior (I’ve just spoken to someone who had to cut their holiday in Greece short as they were intimidated by the hundreds of louts in the resort). Mind you, Scotland is no stranger to football louts (If Glasgow Rangers fans are anything to go by)

GirlsBlouse17 · 09/07/2018 13:57

It is true we have a colonial past but I think we are a different nation now. We are in many ways a humanitarian nation now and do much to support many countries and to promote liberal ideas and practices. Not saying we are perfect but I am proud of many things this country does such as , along with the rest of UK/GB, we have diving and rescue teams in Thailand right now helping the children stuck in a cave. We are often one of the first countries to get support out to others in need. I feel sad that even though we do alot of good now, we are disliked because of past deeds

derxa · 09/07/2018 14:00

ElBurro That's not the YF I know but these ones appear to be er... English. Grin

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 14:05

I think the oldest recorded game of football - or rather, oldest recorded game that could be interpreted as football - is played by Nausica and her maids. Fictional, of course, but lots of people view it as the oldest surviving reference to football.

Doesn't mean the Greeks invented it though, I don't know who did. If it really is as old as the Odyssey, I doubt we can say for sure.

Medieval English football was nothing like the game we have now, though.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 14:05

@rosesandflowers1

Please don't project your inferiority complex onto me. I've no problems with my self-worth, thanks. If it makes you feel better, then carry on telling yourself that I do, it's no skin off my nose.

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 14:07

@derxa

I didn't say anywhere that they were Scottish farmers - that's your assumption - just that they were young farmers and have been causing trouble in the town. Here is some footage of their recent antics;

www.fwi.co.uk/farm-life/young-farmers1/video-young-farmers-filmed-attacking-blackpool-residents

My point is (as you have just proved) that we shouldn't judge all farmers (young or otherwise) because of the bad, boorish and violent behaviour of a minority. It seems that some on here won't apply the same principle to English football fans.

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 14:12

Oh, do be quiet, Delta Grin

Since you haven't denied searching for my old threads or that bringing up my old marital problems in an argument is vile pathetic - not to mention your other comments on this thread - I'd say "insecure" is a kind way to describe you.

If I had an inferiority complex, perhaps I'd go out to work for the reason that there's not "dignity" in staying at home Hmm Or tell people how many figures are in my husbands salary. Or make vile comments about leg spreading and WAGS. Or try and shame happy women for their perfectly valid choices.

But since I don't, I'm happy to say that I'm not projecting - and can wish you the best luck in finding the integrity, class and security you clearly lack.

beautifulblue · 09/07/2018 14:16

I have glazed over the comments (there are so many now I can't keep up) & I can't help but feel sad, sitting feeding my 1yo daughter her lunch thinking she was born into a nationality she didn't choose & how she will potentially grow up with the burden of her countries history on her shoulders when she had absolutely no clue/responsibility for it just because she's English. Sad really! But she has wotsits... so she's good. Roll on Wednesday guys, I really hope... more so than ever.. ITS COMING HOME! ⚽️

LOL what the F are you on about now @DeltaG ???

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 14:21

@rosesandflowers1

No, no, won't you please STFU yourself.

You can spend wordy paragraphs attempting to belittle me, but it won't have any effect on the facts.

Now, why don't you run along with the other upper class wives and do whatever it is you 'do' with your afternoons, in between looking down on people who work for a living.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 14:22

@chrisinthesun

Has hubby given you permission to speak? If not, pipe down.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 14:24

"It's coming home' my arse."

The game of Association Football as we know it was invented in England. There are variations of "football" all over the world, the one that is played in the FIFA world cup/UEFA championships was codified for the first time in England.

Before that the game had different rules depending on where it was played.

hmcAsWas · 09/07/2018 14:25

Re the diving rescue team in Thailand that you mention GirlsBlouse - now that's an interesting one because the team is consistently described as "British experts", when in fact they are English (Richard William Stanton - from Coventry, Robert Charles Harper - from Somerset, and John Volanthen - from Bristol). I mention this only because of the oft repeated claim that the English claim Scottish and Welsh achievements as their own (eg Andy Murray) but English achievements as purely English - because of their purported Anglo-centric obsession.

Describing those members of the cave diving team as British experts doesn't quite fit with this theory does it

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 14:27

I see the British / English divers being called British because the media are again mixing up Britain & England

It’s shite when they do that isn’t it?
