To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Btw I don't mean just SNP, I mean labour and conservative MP's aswell. Scottish MP's should not be able to pass a law that does not impact Scotland.

Depending on the news at the time, maybe 3rd or 4th item on national news with as much coverage on regional news as you like. We've had a pretty busy news week though which is why I'm slightly surprised at the continuous football coverage. StoorieHoose is right above - it is shoehorned into everything.

But national news aside, I certainly don't think it's appropriate for the studio teams to be discussing England before, during and after every other game. That's the part that really annoys me. As a football fan I want to listen to build up and analysis of the game I'm watching, not one that's due on several days later.

English people do not have the warmth necessary to be likeable

Imagine someone said the Scots were all stingy bastards or the Northern Irish all terrorists. There'd be huge pearl clutching. But this sort of lazy stereotyping of the English is fine.

The first question I always get from friends visiting London from other countries is ‘why is everyone so unfriendly?’ Sad but true.

Are you familiar with the demographics of London? A very high proportion of the people your friends are likely to meet will have been born outside of the UK.

What do your friends have to say about the friendliness of the locals (who also often won't be locals at all) in similarly sized cities like Paris or New York?

@rosesandflowers1

Sorry but you can't come back from 'my husband has an enormous salary', however you try to spin it onto me 🤣

Working to earn a wage and support yourself will always be considered in higher regard by society than choosing not to, and (barring mitigating circumstances) rightly so.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 11:56

But England (politically) can massively affect Scotland and we just have to suck it up? And Wales, and NI (although not currently given their cosy little arrangement).

And that, right there, in one fucking sentence sums it up.

Nobody else should be able to affect England’s politics, but as soon as we get pissed off about yours affecting us we’re in the wrong?

And I’m out.

I've got the news on now. The football is behind Brexit, the Amesbury story and the Thai boys. And then only in the sports news. Sounds about right to me.

StoorieHoose is right above - it is shoehorned into everything.

No more than other huge events. I remember a few months ago, the marriage of a D-list American actress and a retired army captain was also shoehorned into everything, though actual popular interest in it was much less.

You'd swear some people here resented England's success or something.....

Jaxhog · 09/07/2018 11:57

I can't help thinking that we English as a whole, lack national pride! We really specialise in doing ourselves down. We're always apologising for being English, so that other, prouder, nations just join in. I don't it's that other nations hate us, they are just prouder of their own.

Incidentally, while some English fans are obnoxious, most are not. And fans from many other nations are just as revolting and vicious.

Thecrabbypatty · 09/07/2018 11:57

Lweji yes initially this is true, but they were the only ones who agreed this so didn't really count for much. The fury directed at the British Empire is for what actually happened to the countries, not the theoretic colonisation the Spanish and Portuguese had in mind divided on the North to South meridian. And it was a treaty, unenforceable because they didn't actually get around to colonising the countries they planned to.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/07/2018 11:58

Anyone who 'hates' someone they don't know, is a bit of a dick head really.
And certainly not worth listening to.

Also, quite surprised at the number of posters on this thread who seem proud to be xenophobic!

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 11:59

the theoretic colonisation the Spanish and Portuguese had in mind

What's "theoretic colonisation" when it's at home?

Is the fact that an entire continent speaks Spanish and Portuguese just 'theoretical'?

GorgeousJaws · 09/07/2018 11:59

Really? Don’t see many castigating the shite being spouted about other countries on this very thread.

Well I've looked and I can't see any other blanket statements about anyone else's behaviour other than "the English".

Lweji · 09/07/2018 12:00

but they were the only ones who agreed this so didn't really count for much.

It was with the Pope's agreement.

Still, the point was that they didn't "take part". They initiated it.

GardeningWithDynamite · 09/07/2018 12:00

I think there's a difference between just not supporting England and actively wanting the team to lose purely because it's England (or Germany)

Fair enough to support another team (or none) if you actually want them to win, but the ABE attitude seems to be unnecessarily bitter. I think there's a difference between cheering on a team and gloating because the other team is losing.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 12:01

And it was a treaty, unenforceable because they didn't actually get around to colonising the countries they planned to.

Ahem... They did...

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 12:01

No you NEVER read posts about Scottish stingieness on MN!!! Hahaha again I direct you to any thread which mentions Scottish independence!

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 12:01

Well I've looked and I can't see any other blanket statements about anyone else's behaviour other than "the English".

Take your rose tinted glasses off and look again, because it’s there. If you didn’t see it, maybe you agree with it?

Wales did vote for Brexit too, but due to the population size, it wouldn't have made any difference if they didn't. The same is true of Scotland and Northern Ireland. The entire sum of the population of Scotland, Wales, and N. Ireland is still less than the population of England. One of the many problems of the 'Union' but don't get me started on that. What England wants it gets. I'm not denying other British countries involvment in the Empire but they are essentially just other counties in England who are thrown some mostly meaningless powers as a bone to keep them quiet if they get rowdy.

The far right is creeping in all over the world currently (most likely because Trump has suddenly made racism and bigotry acceptable again) but I don't believe for a second that if a dictator as bad as Hitler gets into power again that it will be in Germany.

Germany was at the root of both world wars but now are one of the main players in the world. They bounced back from the wars and bettered themselves as a country because they chose to learn from history. Britain chooses to brush aspects of it's past into a shadowy corner and deny them which, to take this back to the point of the thread, comes out in the 'can do no wrong' attitudes of English fans.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 12:01

The actively wanting other teams to lose happens everywhere else too.

I've seen T shirts in Aus saying "I support Australia, and anyone playing New Zealand/South Africa".

I never said that did I. You have a parliament in Scotland and Wales which England do not have and that is unfair. Why should we not get to vote on the same devolved issues?
Good luck with the Indy ref, frankly I think a lot of England will be glad if it goes through.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 12:02

Likely to be to do with rugby. The tri nations are famously competitive.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 12:03

"Why should we not get to vote on the same devolved issues? "

We have a parliament and the SNP and others choose not to vote on matters which will only have an impact on England.

Do try to keep up.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 12:03

Why should we not get to vote on the same devolved issues?

You should, just without your DUP minions and other non English parties voting. You spectacularly missed my point that EVEL only excludes the SNP. So it’s not EVEL at all is it?

Thecrabbypatty · 09/07/2018 12:04

But I think Olivia is right, other countries are allowed to be proud, why not the English? Personally I think we should be proud of the personal liberty, justice system, human rights advances and free democratic and economic system we have, but if people want to be proud of their football team, why not?

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 12:05

Their minions, not yours sorry.
