To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

StoorieHoose you know that is 22 years old right???

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 10:35

When you get to my age the 90s was only 10 years ago Grin

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 10:35

In fact the vast majority of the people who settled in Northern Ireland were Scottish.

And even today, the more extreme Loyalists tend to be of Scots Presbyterian rather than English Anglican descent.

OliviaPopeRules · 09/07/2018 10:35

I also wish that was the case :)

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 10:35

It's precisely because England have now exceeded those expectations that there is such excitement - as there would be in any country.

I'd probably be more excited if I could go to sleep without fireworks or drunken singing as a lullaby, watch news reports about IKEA being trashed and cars being vandalised, or listen to people excuse selfish or poor behaviour with "The World Cup!"

Hell, scrap that - I probably still wouldn't be excited, I hate football. Most sports in all honesty. But I genuinely feel resentment about English football now, despite being English, because of the disgraceful way we are behaving. It's not just the minority of fans either. The stupid singing, public and excused drunkenness (bus driver wouldn't get a man off the bus yesterday because of "The World Cup is on, have a heart!") and the screaming every time they scored a goal are all from your everyday fans.

howfaralong · 09/07/2018 10:36

All that proves is that the British were more succesful at empire building than those countries. Do you seriously think that the French and Spanish didn't envy the success of British imperialism and wouldn't have loved to have it for themselves? Empire was considered the height of civilisation in those days.

Jesus 🙄

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 10:36

I would hope that media attitude had changed in those 22 years but we won’t know until the next time it’s England V Germany’s will we? Wonder if the papers would use that image if Wales or Scotland were playing Germany?

mirialis · 09/07/2018 10:37

Football aside (and if you don't understand why, say, Scottish football fans support ABE then I don't think you really understand football)...

Yes some people genuinely hate England - the country, culture, people in general.

So what??? That is unlikely to change for a very long time.

People are petty and prejudiced everywhere and are blind to the irrationality of their own position and bias. If they let hatred of a country (e.g. Saudi Arabia, Russia, Israel, Pakistan, U.S.A, Iran) take up their time and energy or let it prevent them from appreciating people or aspects of culture from these countries, more fool them.

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 10:37

Agreed peckham,

My Italian girlfriend is loving this world cup and wants England to win.
I just don't think you can label the attitudes of a whole country based on one or two negative interactions who may have good reason for their views. That's called stereotyping. Most people from different countries that I have come into contact with want England to do well. Anyone in business would - there will be a short term economic boom if we actually won the world cup - Paul Carney said as much last week. I just hope that Theresa May doesn't somehow turn this to her advantage.

OliviaPopeRules · 09/07/2018 10:39

rosesandflowers1 Come on of course it is the minority. Maybe a couple of hundred people were involved in the incidents you are referring to out of 30 million + fans watching the match.

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 10:39

elburro I read that as Paul McCartney and though eh? Grin

Theresa May needs all the diversions she can get at the moment

LoveLifeLive87 · 09/07/2018 10:40

Love ENGLAND, proud of ENGLAND,
Ashamed and embarrassed of the uncivilised and uncultured savage drunks who ruin it for the rest of us!

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 10:41

Hell, scrap that - I probably still wouldn't be excited, I hate football

Cancel the World Cup. Bring home the team. A MN poster hates football!

It's not just the minority of fans either.

It is. It is a tiny minority. Tens of millions of people watched that match. Only a handful behaved badly. If you want an excuse to be grumpy about somethign which is making millions of people happy, that's your loss.

IcedPurple you're failing to see the point. It's not the Spanish/French etc that have any reason to feel resentment...it's the countries that were colonized. Those same ones - like the Aussies - who have been accused of having a huge chip on their shoulders on this thread.

I have no idea why so many seem to think that's an English thing though, truly was a GB effort.

OliviaPopeRules · 09/07/2018 10:41

StoorieHoose I think you know there is no way they would print something like that today, 22 years is a long time.

ZaphodBeeblerox · 09/07/2018 10:41

Meh. People who look like me (brown, but British) are told we shouldn’t wear the English flag and support “your” country. So we aren’t.
The atrocious behaviour of some English fans does have knock on effects. I heartily cheered for TeamGB in the Olympics and was proud to do so! But anything played under the aegis of St George’s Flag? Thanks but no thanks.

henpeckedinchief · 09/07/2018 10:41

I've seen loads of support for England here in Scotland but tbh when England fans trashed that ambulance it did sour things a bit, didn't it? Maybe you should be more angry about that - and the surge in crime and domestic violence that followed England's win on Saturday. Other countries don't have a culture of their fans rioting and punching their wives after a football match so you can see why England does get a bad rep sometimes.

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 10:43

howfaralong

It's true though, isn't it?

The French fought a brutal colonial war well within living memory. Every 19th century European power wanted an empire. Some were just more succesful at it than others. If you think the French or Portuguese, or anyone else, somehow 'held back' from imperial expansion for moral reasons, you are hugely misinformed.

GorgeousJaws · 09/07/2018 10:43

I don't hate England but I don't expect lot of class and manners from the English.

See, it's statements like this which are apparently fine for people to state that I don't understand.

Substitute England/English for any other country and the statement would be rightly trashed.

Why is it open season on the many decent English people?

IcedPurple · 09/07/2018 10:45

It's not the Spanish/French etc that have any reason to feel resentment...it's the countries that were colonized. Those same ones - like the Aussies - who have been accused of having a huge chip on their shoulders on this thread.

But...... the vast majority of Aussies with shoulder chips are hardly the victims of colonialism (ie aboriginal Australians) are they? For the most part, they are in fact descendants of the colonists.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 10:47

Not that long going by the newspapers when Germany went out this year.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 10:47

@chrisinthesun

I hope I put your little diatribe on 'jealously' to bed there. 🤣

Heaven forbid that some women actually want to go out to work and are capable of earning high salaries! No of course, we'd all rather sit at home playing little wife, and if we have a different opinion, obviously the only reasonable explanation is because we're jealous.

Christ on a bike would be a more appropriate username for you.

howfaralong · 09/07/2018 10:47

Historically accurate, yes. Used in the current day to somehow justify of lessen the behaviour of Britain 🇬🇧 .... ehhh no. Makes for uncomfortable reading.

OliviaPopeRules · 09/07/2018 10:48

I hate to break it to you but the stats for these types of crimes (particularly on the domestic violence after football) are as bad if not worse in Scotland.
