To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

I suggest you lobby Westminster instead of random Scots on Mumsnet though

"Britain is also 90% white but the BBC have to make an effort to diversify their representation. They don't seem to do this when it comes to sports coverage."

Wales got loads of coverage at the last euros.

When Ireland were the only home nation in 1994 they got loads.

The Olympics coverage does all team GB competitors no matter what nation they are from.

Maybe the reason why England are getting all the coverage at this world cup is that they are the only team that qualified.

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 09:27

Free prescriptions and uni fees are paid for out of the Scottish budget from the share of income raised in Scotland by Westminster. Our government decided that they would be free - don’t moan to us if you want it moan to your MP or vote in a party that pledges it

While you may feel it’s not fair ‘as we are all part of the same country’ education is a devolved matter so the Scottish government decided to prioritise free fees

We have national and regional broadcasting through the BBC and itv. Why should the national elements of that be dominated by 'news' about a team representing only one of the 4 nations? Save it for the regional slots.

If I tune in to each bbc news I want a fair balance of news from the UK and the rest of the world. Not shown clips of people sin ginger "it's coming home" every 15 minutes.

Population stats aside England is but 1 of the 4 nations that makes up this United Kingdom.

fassone · 09/07/2018 09:29

Home nation? Ireland?

@Minor
I was under the impression that it was you that responded to my post not the other way round. I'll leave it there I think.

I have to say that I do find the hysteria surrounding England slightly disturbing. I am a long standing football fan (40 years +) and have been to many matches in several countries (including Scotland). I love the way the England team are playing and the dignity and humility they are displaying atm. However, I don't really like nationalism however it manifests itself and some of the behaviour and reaction to the victorys is well over the top. God knows what it would be like if we actually won the world cup.

Thecrabbypatty · 09/07/2018 09:30

The French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and various other countries took part in colonisation, albeit less successfully. Yet no one seems to grind the axe about them in the same way? And as others have said that was years ago! The Ottoman Empire were also expansionist! If you want to go down the historical bent then England should hate the Nordic countries for the Viking invasion, the Italians for the Roman empire and the French for the Norman conquest? As for the fans, I agree some England fans behave appallingly but the foreign office advised against attending the World Cup because of the extreme violence Russian football hooligans were touting.

Hoppinggreen · 09/07/2018 09:32

Due to the behaviour of some England fans I don’t think England deserves to win.
There was some stupidity on Saturday afternoon. ( throwing things around Ikea and standing on cars) that made me embarrassed to be English

Itsfridayiminlovee · 09/07/2018 09:32

A little girl went missing and was found murdered on a Scottish Islands attached he attract of last week. I'm on holiday but put the news on, look through the BBC site and Facebook now and again as I like to be upto date. I had to trawl through so much England football rubbish to find that news.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 09:32

"Home nation? Ireland?"

Ireland played as part of the home nations cup in football didn't they?

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 09:34

topcat,

Home internationals in football used to be between Scotland, England, Walse and Northern Ireland

It's a shame they were scrapped

Rugby union is different

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 09:36

Ireland were still competing as Ireland in the 50s.

However, this is to get on about semantics.

Ireland recieved huge amounts of coverage when they were the only team in USA 94, and lots in Italy in 1990 which was the first time they had qualified ( I think).

KneesupGaston · 09/07/2018 09:37

In N Ireland and I don't mind if England win except that the TV coverage will be constant and how this proves England are the greatest nation on the planet, footballs coming home etc and we will be hearing about 2018 FOREVER much like how 1966 is etched on my brain despite the fact that I'm not English, don't like football and wasn't even born then.

fassone · 09/07/2018 09:41

topcat, Northern Ireland competed as Ireland, the Irish Football Association was included. Not the FAI, the Football Association of Ireland.

sailorcherries · 09/07/2018 09:41

itsfriday yes, this does show the bias of the news reporting at the minute. Utterly disgraceful.

somewhereovertherain · 09/07/2018 09:42

One thing I’ve all was wondered is why do England use the British national anthem for their sports teams but Scotland / Wales / Northern Ireland use songs that represents them. Surely England should too.

Still firnly in the ABE camp. Come on 🇭🇷

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 09:42

A woman in good health with children in full-time education and not earning a wage (SAHW), yes. Why should it be the man's job to support a woman financially in this situation? If the roles were reversed, he'd be a 'cocklodger'.

The term I'd probably use is 'house husband', or, as my DD suggests, the gender neutral 'house spouse.' It sounds like you're just a rude and disrespectful person either way.

I'm a SAHM. I do earn some money because I work from home, but I could probably go out today and get a much better paying job and help "support" the family, but I don't. Because "support" means more than money. I would rather be able to support my children in the ways that they need and want than go out and get stressed and tired for a job, all for money we don't need.

Every family is different and needs different things. Your post is unbelievably ignorant and narrow-minded - howling that the only things you can think of that might require a parent to stay home are her personally having health issues and sorting out childcare.

topcat1980 · 09/07/2018 09:42

The IFA national team continued to select players from the whole of Ireland until 1950,

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 09:44

OK - that's before my time
I used to really enjoy the games in the 70's, they were important back then.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 09:45

It's worth remembering that most of the rest of the world neither knows nor cares about the divides and politics within the UK. We are by and large considered as one.

God this thread has become a self fulfilling prophecy about why people 'hate' England.

Roll on the collapse of Brexit, the current government and if we are very very lucky the union too! 😀

Tomatoesrock · 09/07/2018 09:51

I hope England win, My DP thinks it will be endless braging, I like some of the English squad and I wanted Croatia and Brazil to do well too. As I have friends from the 3.

Ireland has the worse football team, but it is down to population and the large numbers of Irish sports people who play GAA or rugby.
