To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

I don’t hate England. I hate bigots.

ManicUnicorn · 09/07/2018 08:58

Oh and I forgot to say, with England it's never their fault when they loose in a tournament. There is always a scapegoat, they can't just accept that maybe it wasn't their time. They have to blame someone. The referee, the rival fans, someone making a mistake. The effergies of David Beckham in 1998 were disgusting. The press even hounded a referee in 2002 who'd made a decision against England, printing maps of where he lived and encouraging fans to harass him. They still harp on about Maradona and his hand of God, yes it was a hand ball. But that blatantly wasn't a goal in 1966 and would never stand today so get over It...

Mark my words, if England lose on Wednesday it won't be their fault. It never is.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 08:58

And I reckon the blame for Brexit lies squarely with Westminster, not England.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 08:58

Sorry sodding you’ve lost me there

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 08:59

I agree about the players themselves being much more likeable this time around. The previous lot of over-inflated, egotistical twats, with at best marginal talent, were an international embarrassment (Rooney, Gerard, Terry et al.) The constant tabloid media focus on bigging them up and the useless, vacuous, leg-openers AKA 'WAGs' that accompanied them didn't help either.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 09/07/2018 08:59

Don't know why the Scots hate the English though, after all, we're kind enough to pay for their prescriptions and university fees, you'd think they'd love us wouldn't you? it's about time Scotland started paying their own way then, and only then, can they be entitled to say that they hate the English........

You sound incredibly kind. Just a great big bundle of generosity.

Also, don't buy into the indy ref lies.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:00

Sorry sodding you’ve lost me there

Not even slightly surprised. Grin

Hellomumsne · 09/07/2018 09:00

Absolutely! I was surprised by this when living overseas in a place with many international people. Everyone remembers something the English did and random places that were bombed by us around the world etc. And then to top it off you get the same (tongue in cheek/slightly uncomfortable bordering genuine) loathing from Scottish colleagues who I'd considered my fellow countrymen. People have far fewer memories like this of Germany for example and I was told by people they prefer Germans to English. I'm half and half so attempted to emphasise being German a bit more, after a lifetime of having to hide it in England! 😂

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/07/2018 09:00

And I reckon the blame for Brexit lies squarely with Westminster, not England.

England voted for Brexit, Scotland and NI didn't.

Itsfridayiminlovee · 09/07/2018 09:00

I remember growing up in the 90s when English fans abroad were a total disgrace. I'm sure they were banned from some places. They were thugs. And they would commit this thuggery with union jacks on their backs and singing god save the Queen. I'm British and Scottish and resented being dragged down and associated with this. That's where some of my dislike of English national football and all that comes with it stems from.

That and the relentless coverage on national TV biased towards 1/4th of that nation.

The "Engerlund" stuff.

The tantrums when they've lost, the blame apportioned to one single person.

And please, England, get your own national anthem!

ElBurroSinNombre · 09/07/2018 09:01

Louis,

I think the point being made is that under the Barnett formula, Scottish local government has more to spend per head of capita than English local government. Whatever way you look at it, this is unfair and leads to attitudes like MyUserName's. It is not a question of local govenment choices, there is just less money to spend in England. For instance, my son is currently accumulating a ~ £50K debt to pay for his degree whereas if he was Scottish his debt would be far, far lower (no tuition fees). And we are part of the same country.

Anyway as a long term football I'm enjoying this. I am loving the dignity and humility that Southgate and the players are showing - it's a refreshing change (and no doubt unEnglish to some).

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 09:02

@PramCush

Have you ever left the UK or is your xenophobia so strong as to occlude your optic nerve?

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:02

@GhostofFrankGrimes I know that. But I’m not going to label an entire country based on them having a few idiots.

England isn’t a united country. Ask a northerner how they feel? It’s not a hive mind, and unlike some on here, can’t be lumped together.

That’s kind of the point, it’s a minority of idiots, not England as a whole.

Also, given what’s come out since the vote I wonder how many would still vote the same way.

MephistophelesApprentice · 09/07/2018 09:03

"the useless, vacuous, leg-openers AKA 'WAGs' that accompanied them didn't help either."

Holy shit, that's misogynistic.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:03

They have their own national anthem, it sure as shite isn’t mine!

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:04

And yes that comment was spectacularly misogynistic. As is the whole concept of “WAGS”, defining women by their partners.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 09/07/2018 09:04

Ask a northerner how they feel?

I am a Northern and I feel Brexit is folly. The leave voters I know (including family) were taken in by slogans ie. Turkey joining.

Louislovesmud · 09/07/2018 09:05

The comments about colonialism are a bit Hmm

Yes there were many other countries building empires, but the difference in scale is massive. The British empire has attempted to stretch into almost 90% of the globe, and at it's height accounted for almost 25% of it - the Spanish, French and Portuguese don't come near those figures.

It's a British issue, but to say that the British empire was the same as other European countries, or that it's so far in the past really isn't accurate

BrexitWife · 09/07/2018 09:05

Mostly I think it's sour grapes, but let them stew in their bitterness.

I have to say, this actually sums up a lot about the English attitude.
If people have an issue with us, it can because of how we bah en, it has to be jealousy, bitterness etc...
Nope.
Always someone else fault....

KittyVonCatsworth · 09/07/2018 09:06

England AND Wales voted Brexit.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 09/07/2018 09:06

ElBurro

Is it also unfair that the more rural places in England get more spent on them per head than in the urban areas?

Its a matter of geography. The more people in a space, the cheaper it is to provide services.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:07

I meant about England as a whole, because the northerners I know feel a definite disconnect with the south, and are often spoken about and treated with the same disdain and sneering as us.

I think lies played a big part in Brexit. And an awful lot of people fell for them.

The fact that England (and Wales) voted for Brexit and Scotland and NI voted to remain but cannot do anything about it because England has more votes caused a lot of discontent.

I think if Indy 2 happens it will be a very different result. Mostly because the last minute “Vow” dreamed up because they saw the opinion polls and shat themselves has been proven to be lies.

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 09:08

Those particular women set feminism back years. They do nothing except live off the fame and money of the men they are having sex with, and then use this to look down on others. I've no qualms about describing them accurately.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 09:08

This started out as a fairly lighthearted mickey taking thread but it’s turning nasty. We are on social media and it’s about football for god’s sake. Does it all really matter?

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 09:09

@nNina22 you got nasty 2 pages back? Now you’re pissed off people have reacted?

I’d say it was unbelievable, but actually it’s pretty predictable.
