To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

As for the question of ‘why does Scotland have any issue with us English?’ I propose to look a bit at how promises during the Idref have been renegated. How it is clear that Scotland is a different country to England on a cultural point of view etc etc. How they have their own team at football anyway.

The current political issues, namely Brexit, hasn’t helped at all either. They want to stay in the eu but it looks more and more likely that a no deal Brexit will be imposed on them. They’ve lost some freedom from the withdrawal bill etc etc...

Basically, even within the U.K., there are plenty of things that have happened recently that have been very divisive for the country. And it shows.

Same for the rest if the world. The U.K./England has shown itself to be very arrogant (think about wanting to recreate empire 2.00, expecting old colonies to want to have close ties with the U.K. with nothing they want in return, eg visas and India, etc...) and the bashing they’ve given to various eu counties.

ManicUnicorn · 09/07/2018 08:42

I think with regards to the other home nations it's the media who get our backs up. The total and utter obsession with England, the England football team, how they will do, whether or not they will win, the fucking obsession with 1966. Wall to wall coverage. Its relentless.

It really became obvious during Euro 2016. Wales and N Ireland being an after thought, and then when Wales got to the Semi's (which we knew full well we wouldn't win btw) it didn't get anywhere near as much coverage in the press as it would have if England had got there. That's what annoys people as opposed to the England team itself, although the previour generation of England players were so awful them going home early couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of people....

The hatred from other nations I can only assume comes down to a combination of colonialism and the behaviour of England fans in the past.

BrexitWife · 09/07/2018 08:42

Re not hating English people individually.
Is it not the same than with immigrants, EU or not?
We don’t want you, immigrants are taking school places from us, NHS etc etc.
But we dint mean you when talking to one of those immigrants, like your consultant in the NHS, the teacher at your dc school etc etc....

Basically, Aren’t people just replicating what they’ve heard for the last two years??? But because it’s now applying to the English , it doesn’t feel right anymore?

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 09/07/2018 08:43

@SoddingUnicorns this is the last I'm saying on it, I said the Scottish don't pay for University, this is true, I also said prescriptions are free in Scotland, this too is true, so were you find my comment wrong I just don't know. I'm the least bigoted person you'd ever meet, but if you feel name calling justifies your factually wrong and ignorant comment then ok, if it makes you feel better.

drearydeardre · 09/07/2018 08:43

luckystar
There is also a seeming total almost refusal to get that I am Irish, of completely Irish heritage and so I am culturally and emotionally Irish. With all of the beautiful history that that entails.
my version (to quote you from my perspective) so maybe you understand why I resent the attitudes on here so much

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 08:44

In England we pay a hefty fee to attend university, Scottish young men and women don't, my sons got a good paying job and is still paying off his uni fees ten years on!

Do you really think that it is Scotland's fault that the English government doesn't spend their budget on uni fees? They have nothing to do with how England spends their budget.

To echo previous posters, if you don't like how England runs things, why don't you move? Wink

BrexitWife · 09/07/2018 08:44

Manic or you can call that the outrageous behaviour of England who think they are above anyone else and the rest of the U.K. just does not matter......

DeltaG · 09/07/2018 08:45

@WTFdidwedo

Watch on a foreign network then. Watch on French Eurosport and you'll not get a single positive comment about England. Certainly for the tour de France. They revelled in Chris Froome having a jar of piss thrown over him on the 2015 tour.

Looklikewemadeit · 09/07/2018 08:46

So much bitterness on this thread Sad

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 08:46

@IsMyUserNameRubbish I didn’t deny that Scotland doesn’t have uni fees and prescriptions.

What I denied was your ridiculous, inaccurate and nasty little snipe that England paid for it. Which you’re apparently now denying that you said?

You can say you’re not a bigot all you like. Your posts say different.

Not so fucking witty now are you?

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 08:46

With all of the beautiful history that that entails.

Uh, I haven't studied History in a while, but I don't think there's many countries on Earth that can happily say their history is "beautiful."

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 08:46

Manicorn, is there really so much hatred towards England and the English? it all seems such a waste of energy

BrexitWife · 09/07/2018 08:47

And between dreary and luckystar no one feels british. Or feel they are part of the same team (football or not).

:(:(

Willow2017 · 09/07/2018 08:48

I dont care either way but the media coverage is very biased

If any sports person/team from Scotland, Ireland or Wales are doing well then they are 'British' if they lose then they are Scottish Irish or Welsh. Many English people seem to think we are all 'English' and the england team is the 'british' team and it gets annoying.
Saying that i am currently in wales on hols and there was nothing but cheering for england in the local pubs on sat you could hear the celebrating from outside😀 so not everyone hates English people per se just the attitude of the thuggish fans and the media bias.

I find the attitude of some English people that S,I and W are just counties in England and England = Britain/uk bloody anoying but i dont hate every English person on the planet.

There was a thread recently that personified this attitude. Asking where to visit in 'Scotland' and then they were horrified and very surprised that they actially lived 12 hours drive away from scotland and they couldnt just pop there in a couple of hours or visit everything of interest in the whole country in a long weekend 😀 they had no actual clue where it was😁 😁 but that was hilarious and didnt make me hate anyone.

I think all the 'hatred' over a footie match is more to do with football than colonialism. I doubt many dyed in the wool footie fans are seeing past a rival football team. You wouldnt expect a man u supporter to support another team that beat them to get to the fa cup final would you?

juneau · 09/07/2018 08:48

Lots of other countries aren't really liked outside their own borders. Look at Germany or Argentina - hardly widely loved are they? But who cares? We have the best chance in more than 50 years to win the WC. Mostly I think it's sour grapes, but let them stew in their bitterness. I hope we win and stick it to the lot of them!

MinorRSole · 09/07/2018 08:49

Actually @IsMyUserNameRubbish you said the English paid for our free prescriptions and university. That is bullshit

MinorRSole · 09/07/2018 08:50

Oh and fwiw I'm supporting England in the World Cup!

Louislovesmud · 09/07/2018 08:51

Don't know why the Scots hate the English though, after all, we're kind enough to pay for their prescriptions and university fees, you'd think they'd love us wouldn't you? it's about time Scotland started paying their own way

Pretty much all of this is wrong. The English don't pay for Scottish prescriptions and fees. Those are paid for using a budget that's generated from tax revenue. Tax revenue that Scottish people pay into. There are many things that my taxes go towards in England (transport systems, upkeep of English landmarks etc) but I'm not ignorant enough to think that this means the Scots pay for TFL.

Do your research, Scotland does pay it's own way and simply chooses to spend that budget separately.

nervousnails · 09/07/2018 08:51

Ok, so I have spoken to a few people about this and what they say is that this is based on the older teams' performance and 'antics'. Think wayne rooney and co and their entitled attitudes. Everyone admits that the current team is playing clean and seem more likeable. Give it time. If our team continues to play clean and with a good team spirit, people will come around.

I think the most hated sports team, regardless of sport, is usually the aussies and rightly so. England is far better liked and has a lot of support everywhere.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 08:52

Don't know why the Scots hate the English though, after all, we're kind enough to pay for their prescriptions and university fees, you'd think they'd love us wouldn't you? it's about time Scotland started paying their own way then, and only then, can they be entitled to say that they hate the English.........of yes I digress, so as for football

Just to clarify your backtracking IsMyUsernameRubbish.

And you’re now playing the victim. How disgustingly typical.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 08:54

Soddingunicorn you need to calm down. this is mumsnet, not a battle

ProfessorMoody · 09/07/2018 08:55

@DeltaG

I am very, very far from being Nationalist. How laughable Grin

It's the English abroad that get the media coverage, though. Not the Welsh, maybe because they are lumped in as English. Generally the Welsh are liked abroad, certainly in my experience, however there are a few who act like Neanderthals. No one said there weren't.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 09/07/2018 08:55

I'm Scottish. I don't hate England or the English.

I do often support England, and as an F1 fan I support an English driver (who isn't even universally popular in England it should be said).

I'm currently supporting Belgium. Not because of any anti-English sentiment, but due to the fact that my sons partner is Belgian.

Some English fans need to be looking at their behaviour too. Not just the stuff on video, but I've seen some very bigoted talk online (including from people that I wouldn't have expected it from). But the majority of my English friends on Facebook have been just genuinely delighted and celebratory, which is lovely.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 08:56

@nNina22 you found it funny when she first posted, what happened? Someone bit, which is what you delightedly wanted.

Here’s a plan. Don’t make snotty false anti Scottish statements and I won’t get pissed off.

Not so funny when you get your arse handed to you though is it?

Think on that.

PramCush · 09/07/2018 08:56

People hate England because - as a country - you are cluelessy jingoistic. You think you are more important than you are, which is why you are getting completely bumfucked with Brexit.
