To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Btw, don't feel so bad, not being English and not living in England atm (God knows why I left, as apparently half the world wants to be there - having said that, I quite like England and enjoyed living, well..., in London Wink) I can tell you that people here have also been supporting anyone but Spain, Germany, Argentina, France.
Don't be so conceited to think it's an England prejudice. Grin

elaine26 · 09/07/2018 07:41

For me, it's the commentators and the media that have turned me off supporting England, always banging on about 1966. During one game in the euros it was mentioned over 60 times, and during half time of every other game they are mentioned, it's seriously annoying. But it's only football, not the end of the world.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 07:42

Yes Polkerris and it’s fine if they don’t care one way or another. I just think people should let the English enjoy the ride so far. It probably won’t last and then we’ll have to put up with everyone going yah boo

I have an english friend, her husband is English, all her immediate ancestors are English, and she said she wanted anyone but England to win. got me irrationally annoyed

Mousefunky · 09/07/2018 07:42

I think the English are made a mockery of abroad in all honesty and I don’t wonder why since many act like monkeys on holiday and also, Brexit. Many English folk act like they are the divine ruler of the world and guess what? People don’t like that.

Also find an English football supporter willing to back another team had England not gone through.

Looklikewemadeit · 09/07/2018 07:43

I’m welsh but lived in England for a large portion of my childhood and have an English accent. Moved to Scotland when I met my Scottish DH. Ive met a lot of lovely friendly people in Scotland but for every wonderful person there was one who really let the country down. People were so rude to me for being English (which I’m not). I got everything from passive aggressive comments to blatant comments like ugh god you’re English I hate the English. At first I hoped it was banter....it was definitely not.

I don’t get it anymore as I now have a Scottish accent. I don’t mind about not supporting England in the World Cup but it does bother me that people didn’t like me upon hearing the way I spoke. If i ever asked anyone why the hatred was so strong the colonies excise was bought up. It does make me wonder if it’s ok to judge the whole of England on the way their ancestors acted should I judge the whole of Scotland on the way I was treated? As for the thuggish behaviour I saw some incredibly thuggish behaviour in Scotland after the referendum (and after old firm games).

For the record I love Scotland, England and Wales. I think you get good and bad people everywhere and it’s just a shame that there’s a lot of bitterness out there.

runningkeenster · 09/07/2018 07:43

British media is awfully biased towards coverage of England

This is true and it's quite embarrassing - bot just in relation to football but generally, although I think the BBC got the message to an extent a few years ago and always says "the NHS in England" although you never hear it reporting on the NHS in Scotland!

I would imagine that's how a fair few Irish people do feel and they would have every right

Would they? Isn't it time people started taking the view that the people around now had nothing to do with British colonialism or slavery or stop blaming current Germans for the Nazis or similar? I think we should stop visiting the sins of the fathers on the great x many grandchildren, personally. Quite apart from the fact that what was done was done by the elite, not by the peasants toiling in the fields from whom the majority of us are descended.

Anyway other than in Scotland (and that's not everyone by any means) I don't think there is an anyone but England mentality.

Hmm, there is something just a bit off-putting about the demeanour of England fans when assembled in large numbers

And I agree with this.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 07:47

This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country

Actually, OP, what is your source for this?
Or is "every country", just UK except England?

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 07:51

Why should England be different? It just smacks of self-importance

Because the 1st Football association was created in England?
As was rugby.

So damn right we get to name it without having to think of putting England in front of it Grin [sorry]

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 07:52

This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country

Oh for fucks sake get over yourselves.

By all means enjoy the World Cup and England’s success, but the shite on this thread, on SM and across the media is why that “mentality” exists.

Because you all demand that everyone else gives a shit and get offended when we don’t.

And having read this thread from start to finish the irony is fucking staggering.

There is far more xenophobia, skating close to racist, inflammatory comments from people claiming to support England and be English than anyone else, all the while bemoaning that not everyone supports a national team that isn’t theirs.

It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad because nobody realises that it’s attitudes like that which make people dislike the English football team.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 07:54

Doncha just love the England and English bashing on this thread Grin Yes ....and another thing- their patronising attitude and another thing-their arrogance...and another thing-their hooliganism..and another thing - they’re an embarrassment to themselves. Keep going bashers. We English love you anyway

StoorieHoose · 09/07/2018 07:56

You keep telling yourself that nNina then have a look on any thread from the time of the Scottish independence referendum and you will see thousands of hate filled posts for the Scots by the English

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 07:56

@nNina22 you have no trace of irony in that at all do you? No noticing of the sneering about the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish? (Yes I know NI and Ireland are different countries, unlike some on this thread).

But no, let’s make it out that poor little
England gets an unfair deal while they’re nothing but nice to everyone else.

Oh god that’s funny.

SoddingUnicorns · 09/07/2018 07:56

@StoorieHoose exactly!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 09/07/2018 07:57

I don't like or watch football no matter who is playing.

But I don't hate England or want them to lose.

Am Scottish.

For me it’s the media that drives me bonkers. Over hyped constantly. The media are still banging on about 1966 and it’s tiresome.

I am Scottish. I wish the media would back us, Wales and Ireland in the same way they do England. Not just at football but other sports. Example being Scotland’s win over England in the rugby and more recently the cricket. None of these sports barely get a mention.

I don’t support England. Why would I, I am Scottish. You’d never expect Italy to support Spain or Belgium fans to support France would you?

mmmgoats · 09/07/2018 08:02

I do disagree with the “when England win they want everyone else to know about it” comments as though we are the only country who does this.
I was in Spain for the last world cup (think it was the world cup!) and they were exactly the same - fireworks, firecrackers let off randomly in the street for days after, people milling about in the middle of the road blocking trffic not just the day of the win, people constantly honking horns, blaring music, shouting, getting incredibly
drunk, starting fights with each other...
I’ve said before there are a lot of fair reasons why other nations don’t like us but some of the comments on this thread are bizarre. To read the thread you’d think no other football fan has done anything aside from clap politely and go home.

kingseat2016 · 09/07/2018 08:04

Actually welshcake82on page 15 has put it perfectly.

DrMantisToboggan · 09/07/2018 08:05

This thread is hilarious.

OP: why does everyone hate England?

Some posters: Well it’s not that England is hated, it’s just that some English can be a bit arrogant at times and the media overhypes everything

Some other posters: Ya boo you are all jealous of us cause we are the best at everything, made everything good in the western world, and you all want to come and live in England anyway!

Some posters: Confused

Velvete · 09/07/2018 08:05

It's true that people resent England. I'm proud to be English and this World Cup has made me very proud of our team, they've behaved impeccably and played excellent football.

It's wrong to say the majority of people who come to England do so because they are fleeing war zones- the vast majority choose to come here because they simply want to and see England as an opportunity for a better life.

Talking about colonialism is ridiculous unless you're going to hold every single country's past to account. People use it as a reason to justify their xenophobia of England.

IT'S COMING HOME!

This Grin

Also posters are continuing to interchangeably use England and Britain but still don't understand why the other home nations get mildly irritated by this.
