To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

I'm in England and can't bear England. We're ludicrous.

The IKEA thing is horrendous and petty, but the drunken menaces warbling all hours of the day, fucking fireworks because we won a match and the endless simpering news coverage would be quite enough.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 07:13

Roseandflowers if I couldn’t bear to live in England I would move away. Why don’t you? Genuine question.

I think I must live on another planet. I really have not noticed any 'hatred'' of England (the team) or the English. There have been some isolated incidents of drunken stupidity, but certainly not mass riots and mayhem. In my neighbourhood, I have seen the flags of other nations, flying happily next door to the 'England' flag during this tournament and I even heard a group of Polish young people singing 'It's coming home' on Saturday ( although they were a bit drunk).

I am not a great football fan, but the England team have played well in their matches (albeit not against the strongest teams) and the tournament itself has been a distraction from other, much weightier, national issues.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 09/07/2018 07:19

And yet half the world seem to want to live here Confused

rosesandflowers1 · 09/07/2018 07:20

Why don’t you?

Move away because I hate the football fans? Hmm

Don't get me wrong, I like living in England. But during the World Cup our country is unbearable. People use it as an excuse to act like total dicks, and somehow it's accepted because it's the World Cup.

Usually it doesn't last very long, admittedly, so maybe that's why it's awful this year. I might just pray that we lose because I think I'd probably throw myself out of the window during the probably endless celebrations.

falang · 09/07/2018 07:21

I haven't seen or heard anyone saying this OP.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 07:23

Falang sadly I think there are enough posts on this thread to prove the op’s point

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 07:24

Other countries in the Union haven't got much to be proud of.

No discussion of Northern Ireland and the attitudes of the elected representatives towards abortion and the LGBT community.

No mention of the sectarianism in Glasgow and the effects of the rivalry between Celtic and Rangers.

No country is perfect. No country has a perfect past, perfect population and a perfect present.

WTFdidwedo · 09/07/2018 07:25

Except the Welsh, we're perfect Wink

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 07:26

Part of the reason that people in other countries don’t know that England and Britain are different, is because so many English people use them interchangeably. Which, I’m sorry, is down to arrogance

Yet when people talk about things that are great and 'the best in the world' , they talk about the British Army (not the English army), the British Police (not the English police)....

Bibesia · 09/07/2018 07:26

Well we did try to colonise the planet.

Hahahahaa. OP sorry but you can't have only just noticed this?? I've never met an English person who I didn't like. But at the same time I can 100% understand while the rest of the world does not like England.

Well, that would be somewhat hypocritical of the Scots, Welsh, Germans, French, Spanish and Italians for a starter, given that none of them exactly held back from colonial efforts.

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 07:27

Except the Welsh, we're perfect

Grin

I was trying to think about the Welsh but couldn't think of anything they'd done in the past or any issues they'd had!

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 09/07/2018 07:27

Could be because England have the worse fans in the world, well I say "fans" what I actually mean is hooligans (check out video of the idiot English fans storming ikea in London) therefore making the whole country not liked, yes I know it's not all of them but the majority are, or it could be, when England win, boy do they like everyone to know about it...........and yes, I'm British born and bred.

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 09/07/2018 07:28

Sorry, should've stated I'm English born and bred too.

nNina22 · 09/07/2018 07:30

Bibesa is it really true that the rest of the world doesn’t like England. That’s rather a sweeping statement especially as we have such a thriving tourist industry

Itchytights · 09/07/2018 07:31

Those that claim to hate us, and England, but are happy to live amongst us, would never move away.

We offer access to Healthcare, Schooling, housing etc.....

This is the reason half the world want to be here ...

kalapattar · 09/07/2018 07:34

Bit more complicated in Scotland as the final few years of Scotland becoming part of uk was a more economic/political colonisation than a direct battle led one. The battles/invasion happened earlier, making this easier for the English to do. But still scots were oppressed & subjugated by the English. Coupled with James vi betrayal of his home country

In the North of England, the people who lived there were oppressed by the Norman invaders. Our lands were destroyed by salt, our homes destroyed.

Except that was 1000 years ago. My roots could be from anywhere in the UK and abroad.

How long do people hold grudges for? How do you know if you 'come' from an area? I was born up here, but the ancesters who suffered under the Normans - well, they could be the ancesters of anyone in the UK as it was so long ago.

I love Normandy.

But it seems that some people hold grudges for things that happened to people and their country a long time ago.

Itchytights · 09/07/2018 07:34

I am English, not British and I do not use them interchangeably.

If the Welsh, Irish and Scottish can say it, and not use the term “British “ then I am allowed to say, as I always have, that I am English Grin

madeyemoodysmum · 09/07/2018 07:35

DCItennison
Believe me hooliganism is rife in other European countries I've witnessed it myself in Poland. It's being extremely well controlled in Russia which is great for a change.
It's not just England I'm afraid. Maybe the media makes it seem so.

welshcake82 · 09/07/2018 07:35

Because of the arrogance, op. That's why.
There's no humility.
England act as if they're kings of the world and that really grates on people. The constant talking about England winning the whole thing during every single tournament. Why can't they just focus on the match in hand? They are doing brilliantly well this world cup but it hasn't been the case for many years and yet every tournament, there's hyped up talk up winning the whole thing which you just don't get in other countries. If they won every time, fine but they haven't won it for over 50 years!
It's seeped into all aspects of life, the media going on and on, the way fans behave.
I know the other home nations aren't in the world cup, but in other tournaments they're in (in all sports) the coverage is England, England, England. There's no parity in the UK nations. It's the same way English people say they live in England forgetting they're actually in the UK.
It's for all of these reasons that people are sick of it. I'm not saying I am (and I am Welsh), just trying to answer your question

PolkerrisBeach · 09/07/2018 07:37

I live in Scotland (and am Scottish) and all I'm seeing is general apathy and disinterest.

No bad feeling or hatred, people are wishing them well and all that, but just don't care one way or the other.

Adnerb95 · 09/07/2018 07:38

Well said, Daisydukes.

I am 1/2 Scots/ English.

I've never read a thread so full of vast and unjustified generalisations. Ridiculous.

Think the current team are pretty good; a tiny minority of fans are idiots and I despise their loutish EDF-supporting behaviour.

But yes, I think I can support England without having to caveat that support with reference to past, colonial atrocities.

And actually, I have friends/family from Colombia and Mexico who are now cheering on England now that their own national sides are out of the tournament. If we were out, I would support them!

Life is too short for all this hatred.

ProfessorMoody · 09/07/2018 07:38

Common opinion here in West Wales that the English are hated. In recent years it's been because locals feel that they have come here, bought houses because they are cheaper, then do nothing but moan about everything. They are also seen as loud, miserable and very rude. Especially those from Essex/Kent areas. I must say, that's not my opinion, I couldn't care less, as I'm Welsh but not local and they don't like anyone new. But it is what is generally said.

It's also common knowledge that England fans behave like complete arseholes when they win the football, or when they lose the football. That angry mob mentality is really worrying. You don't get that at the rugby. Totally different atmosphere.

Finally, there's the English abroad thing. People from other countries generally don't behave like the English on holiday in resorts, with the drinking and loutish behaviour. It's embarrassing and disgusting.

Obviously not everyone in England acts like this, but when a large proportion do, and it's covered frequently on worldwide media, it's not really hard to understand why there's such a reputation.

madeyemoodysmum · 09/07/2018 07:39

How do you know you don't get it in other countries?

Are you in those countries at the time

I pretty sure Brazil beef up there clubs success as do Italy Spain etc.
