To be disgusted by my own city?

Seen lovely footage of fans “celebrating” by smashing up a taxi ... jumping up and down on it, completely smashed the windscreen. All done with a large crowd watching them and singing.

Jumping up and down on bus shelters, again smashing them to pieces.

I’m so utterly disgraced with my hometown.

Look at the state the fans have left the high street and head street in? The park will get destroyed!

I assume Head Street has been all repaired in a matter of hours then? You may be ‘Colchester Views’ but you don’t represent all of Colchester

Oliversmumsarmy · 08/07/2018 01:34

Very quiet near me. Was near a load of pubs just after the match who had people grouped on the pavement but none of the vandalism or shouting others are talking about

halfwitpicker · 08/07/2018 01:41

Utter stupidity.

Want2bSupermum · 08/07/2018 01:41

Freeofpills Nope. A 2 drink minimum doesn't target the people who don't know how to behave. Treat them like toddlers with direct consequences for their behavior. Being drunk isn't an excuse. If you cant control your behavior after a few too many don't drink so much or don't drink at all.

Have a proper set up where people who aren't behaving are removed from the street and dealt with and you won't have a problem with hooligans. There also used to be a problem with dead beat dads not paying child support. Putting them in jail when they refused to pay for their children put a stop to it.

TallyWest · 08/07/2018 02:05

I happened to be in the city centre earlier, as I timed it badly as the game had finished. There were crowds, huge crowds 80+ walking in the roads and stopping traffic, the police had to move them along, it took several police vans. The shouting, hitting windows, breaking a bus shelter window where people, including children, were sitting. People were frightened.
It's horrendous it really is. The majority were indulging in this anti social behaviour.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 08/07/2018 02:53

@Rainbowsandsmiles - I never said I wanted it banned, I was simply stating a fact for the area in which I live and my relative works.

Blobbyweeble · 08/07/2018 03:06

I am utterly disgusted by the behaviour of the celebrating fans particularly of the man and woman jumping on top of the FRV in London. I’m working as a paramedic on a car, on my own on Wednesday night and am not looking forward to it in the slightest, I will be glad when it’s all over.

tombstoneteeth · 08/07/2018 03:28

It's times like this that my DH, from a big northern city, is glad to have exchanged it for the most remote part of the colonies.

mathanxiety · 08/07/2018 04:49

Just did a quick google and if England go through to the final then the matches are Wednesday and Sunday

There is a third place game on Saturday. The losers of the semi finals will play. The final decides 1st and 2nd.

Monty27 · 08/07/2018 05:03

I live in South East London. Now here's a thing. We are judged. But all I saw today was smiles, celebration and much hugging.
It was so lovely. and i am irish Smile

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/07/2018 05:42

This is terrible. I was hoping the violence would be a thing of the past.

catandpanda · 08/07/2018 05:56

It's terrible. Hope people are caught and made to pay for damage as a minimum. Loads of glass being smashed here at the pub near London. Fed up of all month drunk idiotic behavior, started at 2.30pm and lasted 12 hours here, glad when its over or at least England out.

mathanxiety · 08/07/2018 05:59

Justtheonequestion
...they use football as an excuse to adopt such behaviour thus creating a group identity whereby it becomes acceptable inside the culture to reject all basic social norms and behaviour expectations...

YYY to this - it's toxic masculinity at its worst. Hence also the violence against women.

But when they get away with this - because of police cuts - it reinforces the sense of being untouchable, the sense that they will have the last word.

My local police force spent $77 million on police overtime the last time a local team won something big.

FatBarry · 08/07/2018 06:54

We were in France last week when they won. The people in the street were banging the car roofs as they drove through the streets. We seemed get an extra bang having GB plates on.

It's shitty football, I hate it. TBF our town was dead during the football, no idea what it was like later but never saw or heard anything.

dingdongadingding · 08/07/2018 06:58

Move to Scotland.

SerenDippitty · 08/07/2018 06:58

Anyone remember when Wales got to the semis of Euro 16? The Welsh travelling fans were the most popular - great ambassadors for their country - and I don’t remember scenes like this on the streets of Cardiff or Swansea. There may have been but I don’t remember any....

catinboots9 · 08/07/2018 06:59

London have had a rapid response ambulance car trashed so it's now off the road

ShockShockShockShock

CasperGutman · 08/07/2018 07:25

I’d prefer to blame the Government that introduced all day drinking. Mmmmmmm wasn’t that the Blair Government?

All day drinking (11am to 11pm) was brought in by the 1988 Licensing Act, so you can blame the Conservatives if you want. Previously bars had to close from 3pm to 6.30pm, which could have been a good idea in this case.

The Blair government allowed applications for 24-hour licenses but these louts all seem to have drunk substantially more than they can handle during daytime!

myhousetoday · 08/07/2018 07:33

Wow shocking scenes. I can report that good-natured mayhem is possible: heavily policed and pretty drunk no doubt, but the celebrations in 'my city' did not turn into rioting. So I guess the big screens have not been cancelled for the next one. Even the local picturehouse cinema was showing it for free on one of the screens.

Madhairday · 08/07/2018 07:42

I hate this toxic laddish culture. I live in a small town but a load of cars on my street got smashed up the other night and a load in the church car park and town centre too. Loads of shouting and 'singing' way into the night which is frustrating when you need windows open.

Dreading the next week if the last is anything to go by :(

cherrytrees123 · 08/07/2018 07:44

This is why I hate the World Cup.

Angrybird345 · 08/07/2018 07:44

Lots of trouble last night - twats “celebrating” the win by vandalising and breaking things - plebs.

Tjzmummabear · 08/07/2018 07:55

ha ha just realised my mistake - bear of very little brain

NoNarnas · 08/07/2018 07:57

Same city as me. I was in the Ciry Center yesterday shopping and was disgusted by the behaviour of these yobs. Huge group of them standing around chanting at police after smashing up this vehicle and bus shelters.

Tjzmummabear · 08/07/2018 07:59

I live somewhere quieter - worst we got was drunks in Spar. Lass could barely walk.
