To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

Tong for me, but not with a 'hard 'o' sound, like 'pop', it's a softer sounding 'o' (more of a cross between o and u really!) I'm from Manchester...but I know many Mancunians who say tung...so I don't think it's regional.

Proseccoagain · 08/07/2018 22:22

I say tung, but DH always said tong (he was from Manchester area).

Toddlerteaplease · 08/07/2018 22:32

Tong

cherish123 · 08/07/2018 22:56

Tung- never heard tong.

Sharptic · 08/07/2018 23:03

'Tong' here, never even thought it might have a different pronunciation. I'm from notts area and we definitely don't speak the Queen's English!

LucyFox · 08/07/2018 23:39

Tong.

I s’pose somebody will be along soon with the “tuth” vs toooth debate next?

BeefyCakes · 08/07/2018 23:44

#teamtung

MunchMunch · 08/07/2018 23:56

LucyFox they already have, and for the record it's tooth Grin

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 09/07/2018 11:10

Dunno Teggun that's always how my mother said it

GorgeousJaws · 09/07/2018 11:14

Tong.

Tung sounds odd.

ThePricklySheep · 09/07/2018 11:18

Lived in many places around the UK and have never heard tong.

LuxuryTime · 09/07/2018 11:37

I’m from Trafford, Manc. Middle class, grammar school; everyone I knew growing up said tong.

I had assumed it was just a north/south thing. I say Baff not Barth. Grass not grarse. Bus, mug and cup with an “uh” not an “ah” in the middle.

Tongue (South Yorkshire)

Scone - as in 's' then 'cone'.
Not 's' then 'con' scon

LoniceraJaponica · 09/07/2018 11:49

Scone to rhyme with gone

Minisoksmakehardwork · 09/07/2018 11:53

Tung here.

As an aside, southern me has to stop myself correcting the children with their bath, grass, path etc as I add in the 'r' sound. Dh is northern so doesn't. I have to remind myself it's not wrong, it's just dialect.

ToothTrauma · 09/07/2018 11:56

I’m sitting here saying both out loud and I honestly don’t know which one I say Confused Maybe both! I’m from the Midlands where we do say some things differently to others.

Clarich007 · 09/07/2018 11:59

Also South Yorkshire here, and it's definately tong !!

UrgentScurryfunge · 09/07/2018 12:07

Tung. But I haven't lived with a "local" accent for 30 years and have kept a fairly generic southern tone from my deepest youth.

I spent some early years in the West Midlands and was horrified by the "tuth" fairy Grin

I've noticed that DS1 has an interesting fusion accent depending on who he hears words from most frequently. He goes "oop to the bahth" as he hears the short oo in up more frequently at school, but the longer ah in bath more from me. So he probably has a tung not a tong, which is good for safety as it's a bad idea to put your toungue on a bbq Wink

LoniceraJaponica · 09/07/2018 12:07

"Also South Yorkshire here, and it's definately tong !!"

It's tung in my part of South Yorkshire (Barnsley, and all my Sheffield work colleagues say tung)

pigsDOfly · 09/07/2018 12:08

I say tung. I've googled one of those pronunciation things and it's saying it's pronounced tung.

I suspect tong is regional.
